Officially 15’10” guarding 77 eggs! Learned a lot while chasing this Python for the last year! These Pythons are very cryptic and hard to find especially a nest like this in an underground cavern. Removing this big girl who has laid over 150 eggs in the last 2 years is a very important victory for our conservation efforts in the Everglades! The eggs were still about 4 weeks away from hatching and now won’t have a chance to make any negative impact on our South Florida environment!

After 2 hours of digging up the area we finally were able to get her out by letting her bite my arm with a snake bag wrapped around it! Quote to live by “OMG this is not a good idea” 😂

Sometimes while traveling hundreds of miles in a night we come across unfortunate scenes. One of the most common is wildlife being hit be vehicles. In this case, I came across a large water snake just hit by a truck which was close to giving birth to its babies! When I stopped I noticed some movement and realized that some of the babies were still alive so I rescued them and moved them off the rd!

If you were driving along could you spot the 8’ python? When driving for hrs some nights and not seeing anything this is always a pleasant sight to come across! I was able to take a new assistant out this week and came across this nice size python to demonstrate how to make a grab. We unfortunately weren’t able to get him a python for him to try to make a grab but hoping to be able give him a chance to make it happen next time!

14ft 5in hefty female

When the first Python you grab and bag is a thick female with lots of power it's going to be a good night! We snapped a few pics and removed her from the Glades, but that wasn't before she tried to get a piece of me....luckily she was unsuccessful in doing so. **chers

Great job!

Wow - great work everyone!!! The USACE heavy equipment team removed 7 pythons and 300+ eggs from a 500 sq ft area while clearing vegetation around the Faka Union canal in the Picayune Strand. The Corps partnership with the Conservancy of SWFL has really paid off. The biggest snake was 15’. Total 6 females (all nesting) and 1 male.

Just curious, how do you say “HELP!” in Parseltongue?

There are 27 native snakes in the Everglades, but one non-native has caught the attention of many park visitors -- the Burmese Python.

Naturally found in Southeast Asia, pythons were brought to North America for the exotic pet trade. The first wild python sightings in the Everglades were reported in the 70's but by the mid-90’s observations had become an annual occurrence. Since then, we’ve documented an approximate 95% decline in native mammal populations, a direct result of predation by pythons. When's the last time you saw a marsh rabbit in the park?

Although they're bad news for the ecosystem, Burmese pythons stay away from park visitors so you need not worry when you come to the park.

However, if you do happen to spot a Burmese Python, make sure you keep a 15ft (3m) distance, take photos, record GPS coordinates (or detailed directions), and report the python (or any other invasive species) using the ""IveGot1"" app, by visiting IveGot1.org, or by calling 1-888-Ive-Got1.

We figured this info would be interesting to all of you and help you see just what kind of problem is occurring in Big Cypress and most of South Florida! The second picture shows you how many have been removed over the past few years. Thanks to Kurt Cox for sharing this info with us!

Researchers from the USGS, NPS, and UF (several are members of this group) published a cool paper that describes how a trail camera caught a bobcat raiding eggs from a telemetered python’s nest in Big Cypress.

Captions for the photo montage: (o) python is brooding her nest. After the camera is placed and the biologists leave, the python leaves the nest; (a) bobcat discovers unguarded nest (b) and proceeds to depredate, cache, and uncover the eggs over several days (c–h); the next day, the bobcat returns to find the female python back on the nest (i) the python appears to have struck at the bobcat, and the bobcat swipes at the snake (j–l); after the biologists remove potentially viable eggs for laboratory incubation, the bobcat returns to scavenge discarded, inviable eggs over several weeks (m–o).

The python was 14-feet long. It weighed 120 pounds before nesting, lost 34 pounds while on the nest (weight loss from laying the eggs, and from fasting while on the nest), and within a month after coming off the nest it had gained 50 pounds, and now weighs 136 pounds. If you are wondering how it gained so much weight so fast, deer hooves were found in its p**p.
