I've been lucky enough to witness head slaps in the Swamp before, but I've never been fortunate to get it on video! What a cool capture.

Ready to cross the Okefenokee Swamp with us?

A camper generously opened his 2 day, 1 night cross-swamp trip to public registration! April 10th through 11th, we'll depart from the east side of the Land of the Trembling Earth, paddle to Canal Run Canoe Shelter and camp in the middle of the Swamp at the end of the historic Suwannee Canal, and then continue through cypress forest and Billy's Lake to end on the west side at Stephen C. Foster State Park.

We'll paddle 10 miles on day 1 and 7 miles on day 2.

Registration is $350.00 per person plus tax, plus a shuttle fee that will be equally divided amongst the participants after a final head count. Fee includes your kayak or canoe, camping equipment and gear, meals and snacks, permit fees, guidance, local Naturalist expertise, and digital photos of your adventure.

Only a few spots are available, so contact me ASAP at [email protected] to register! See less

New phone, better photos! And what better way to start off with a new one than by snapping a friend of mine, fellow swamp guide Dan Jones, as he and a friend ended their Suwannee River paddle trip at Cone Bridge Landing. I shuttled them back up to their vehicles at Fargo after their 2.5 day adventure on this premier southern paddling river.

They reported no deadfall obstructing the river in that section.

"Paddling in a swamp!? With alligators? Oh I could never do that!"

I've heard this many times over the years! It brings me so much joy when people actually want to give it a try... they discover it's totally unlike what they were expecting. Just look at this beautiful scene from a private paddle trip a group of friends took with me last year on the west side of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge... swamp serenity!

Happy Okefenokee Swamp Day!

Okefenokee is such an amazing wetland right here in our backyards in Southeast Georgia. I consider myself lucky to be a Ware County native that grew up going to "the Swamp"! What are some of my favorite things to appreciate about our Okefenok?:

🌿 This 438,000 acre wetland is one of the last large intact wetlands left in the world.

🌿 Its peat-forming nature means that it constantly sequesters carbon in its mucky depths.

🌿 Miles upon miles of wilderness water trails spiderweb through its prairies and forests, making each visit a new adventure!

For small business owners like myself, a hand-written card means the world! I have a little cork board in our kitchen where I've put up cards I've received over the years. I love looking back over them. This is my most recent one... thank you Rod and Mari!

On today's private 3 hour boat tour on the east side of Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge for a couple from Maine, one of my guests was an avid birdwatcher, and he mentioned one of his life list species he was hoping for was a Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher (teeny tiny little things!).

While moseying up the Grand Prairie Run/Pink Trail, I pointed at a grown-up battery next to us, covered in t**i and young dahoon hollies, and I said, "This is gnatcatcher habitat right here." Not 10 seconds later, I said "There's your Gnatcatchers!". 2 were flitting around in the t**i bush right next to us. I got a high five for that one. 😀

(I also got him his first American Bittern sighting! We saw 2 in the Suwannee Canal!)

We'll return to our regularly scheduled swamp and river paddling programming soon- in the meantime enjoy our dog Hudson, who LOVES playing outside in our rare South Georgia winter wonderland!

He is 3/4 Boykin spaniel, 1/4 golden retriever, and a bundle of pure energy. I'd love to take him on a river outing one day (not in the swamp of course!).

Please share pictures of your pups down below, snow or no snow!

As a paddling guide in the Swamp, I came to recognize that many people don't want to, or can't, paddle for four hours or more- so I offer two hour long paddle tours for those visitors. These out-and-back trips are great for those short on time or with different physical needs. Even a short trip is a great way to soak in the beauty of this amazing wetland!

We "shore" are excited for our 😉 this week, we're diving in with some highlights about the beloved Atlantic Sturgeon (𝘈𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘹𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴) 𓆝 𓆟 𓆞

The Atlantic sturgeon is a large, ancient fish that can grow up to 14 feet long and live up to 60 years! During the late 1800s, many people flocked to the East Coast in search of caviar riches from sturgeon fisheries causing a boom known as the "Black Gold Rush." Once common, this endangered species is now protected due to overfishing and pollution.

This "living fossil" of a fish uses freshwater rivers, such as our Satilla River, to spawn and hatch its young! They spend the first few months of life in their river of birth before migrating to the big blue sea. 🌊💙

Canoe or kayak camping trips are an amazing way to connect with your friends and family! Goof off, share stories, cook together, see who's the fastest paddler, or who can catch the biggest fish... the important thing is just to make the trip happen and get out there.

Thanks to the group in the first photo for renting their canoes and gear from OSE for the second year in a row. And thanks to the couple from up north who rented and had us shuttle them from White Springs, FL for a multi-day Suwannee trip!

Request your rentals at okefenokee-satilla.com or by emailing me (Jenny) directly at [email protected]. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have and help with the logistics of your trip.

Boat and gear rentals are delivered to and picked up from landings in Okefenokee, the Satilla, St. Marys, and Suwannee Rivers. We are based in Waycross, GA and as a mobile outfitter, we meet you where your adventure begins!

Thank you to Susan L. for this photo of me on our trip on the Red Trail in Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge! As you can see from this picture of me in Maul Hammock Lake, I prefer to solo canoe. I find it more comfortable than kayaking if I'm going to be on the water for more than a few hours. I do like kayaking though, and I prefer to use one of my kayaks for short trips or scouting trips. What's your preference?

Even the chilly days in Okefenokee are so beautiful! Winter is a time of pause in the Swamp. Cranes nibble on redroot, otters roam without care, ducks dot the prairies, and the grasses wave golden in the wind. Gators are dreaming of warmer days while they bask on the blowups and batteries. Gray, bare cypress trees tower over visitors, looking so very different from their summer green. Spring will come, but for now, a winter trip in the Swamp is a time for reflection. 🌬
