You might not believe it but one of the highlights of my last trip to Morocco was when a traveler lost their wallet.

They thought they left it on our bus overnight, but when we set off to leave the next morning, they couldn’t find it anywhere. The wallet wasn’t on the bus, in the hotel, in their bags or anyone else’s for that matter. We worked backwards and determined they last had it at the roadside restaurant where we had lunch the day before. Between Google, Facebook and TripAdvisor, we found five incorrect numbers for the place but got lucky with the sixth.

The person who answered put us through to the manager who said that a waiter had found a wallet in the parking lot the evening before. He looked inside and saw that it belonged to an American and remembered our group. He had tried to get in touch with the owner of the wallet to no avail so was happy we got in touch. When he found out where we were and where we were going, he said he knew of a driver heading in the same direction, so gave the wallet to him to deliver to us at a mutually convenient location.

We had to make a small adjustment to our plans - and made an enjoyable detour to visit the Atlas Film Studios - and then met the driver with the wallet at exactly the time he said he’d meet us. The wallet was handed over with everything intact (credit cards, IDs and no small amount of cash).

The moral of the story? Great moments can happen even when things go awry and it is an absolute truth that most people are good.

Shortly after I arrived last night, I went for a little stroll in the Medina. And realizing that I was woefully underprepared for the chilly temperatures, I popped into one of my favourite shops to look at their warm layers and met these two lovely lovely ladies (pictured with , third generation weaver and owner of the shop). We up spending much of the evening together shopping and laughing like old friends, so much so that everyone we met that night thought we were!

One of the things I love most about travel is meeting new people along the way. I think there’s something about being away from home and the daily grind that opens people up to connections in a way that nothing else does. In a few hours, I’ll meet my newest group but I already know it’s going to be so good to know them, just as it has been for everyone else I’ve travelled with. 💕

I’m not the most athletic person and am definitely not an outdoorsy type. When I’m faced with a physical challenge, my default is to back away. So a trek in Peru involving hiking and actual non-luxury-tent camping? Hmmmm. But then…

I love being outside and the way it feels to get moving. And the opportunity to do this on a grand adventure in Peru? I can’t not be excited. The trip will be in November and I’m cohosting with .thebe . She’s a big proponent of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone because she knows how much you’ll reap the rewards later. Also, we’ll be visiting Machu Picchu, need I say more?

A few spots still available. Link in bio for more information.

If you take a look at my story highlights, you might think that I am a Morocco-centric travel planner. It’s true that I’ve spent a fair bit of time there recently but I do run trips to other beautiful and exiting places.

…like Peru! This September, I’m heading to trek the Andes with the indomitable .thebe . We’ll spend a few days discovering the Sacred Valley and then a few days hiking in the Andes. At the end of our trip we will arrive at that bucket-list experience: Machu Picchu. Join us? (Link in profile)

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada and Asian Pacific Heritage Month in the US - an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the contributions of North Americans of Asian descent and for me personally, to reflect on my own family history.

This is a portrait of my great-grandmother Honorata. At 23, she married my great-grandfather, a twice-her-age baker from China who sought a better life in the Philippines. Despite having been widowed relatively young, she made sure that all her children went on to have a good education and they did: two became teachers, one an accountant, another a doctor and my grandfather, a lawyer.

Any guesses who painted this?

The artist wrote that he was "captivated by Marrakech. Here in these spacious palm groves rising from the desert the traveller can be sure of perennial sunshine, of every comfort and diversion, and can contemplate with ceaseless satisfaction the stately and snow-clad panorama of the Atlas Mountains. The sun is brilliant and warm but not scorching; the air crisp, bracing but without being chilly; the days bright, the nights cool and fresh."

Anyone?
It was Winston Churchill, circa 1935.

Sunset over the Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakech’s main square.

During the day, the square is mostly occupied by a smattering of orange juice stalls and water sellers with their traditional leather water bags and brass cups. Nightfall is when it really comes to life, when dozens of food stalls and entertainers populate the area. Can you see yourself taking it all in?

Travel is wonderful but when you can learn new things while traveling? Magnificent! I always build educational opportunities into my trips, whether it's a cooking class, crafts workshop, physical activity or all three of the above. Click on the link in bio to find out more.

Io e il mio ragazzo.

You can meet some real characters while traveling. This jogging suit-clad signore saw me taking snapshots and offered to take a picture of me for me. Anyone who knows me knows how uncomfortable I am having my photo taken but I saw this as an opportunity to practice my (terrible) Italian and asked him, "why don't we take a photo together?" - so we did! He then asked me where I was from and was so delighted to hear that I was from Canada that he pinched my cheek!

Did you know that I also plan private trips? I am currently working on a special occasion trip to Italy and it's taking me back to the wonderful times I've spent there, learning Italian, eating gelato and falling deeply in love with everything about the place.

Move over argan oil, there's another Moroccan oil we need to talk about. The seeds of the Barbary fig (the succulent red fruit seen here) is high in vitamin E and deeply moisturizing linoleic acid and could very well be the fountain of youth. It's also environmentally sustainable and an industry that has won many Moroccan women a lot of economic freedom. I'll take you to my source in Marrakech, if you're interested.
