35 days. Over 2500 nautical miles. 3 fellows (including a switch at San Francisco). Mostly wind on the nose through the journey. Recalibrating the boat's onboard systems while underway. An adventure that carried its share of trials and triumphs - to safely deliver from Puerto Vallarta the Wauquiez PS40, Exit Strategy, to her owners in Victoria.

This was a voyage of discovery - of the planet's greatest blue waters and the life held within.

Exit Strategy will now go on to a fine life in the Pacific Northwest.

After clearing customs at the Inner Harbour, we fueled up and made our way to Exit Strategy's new home. At 8:05 PM she settled into her berth at Canoe Cove.

It's been a fascinating delivery and we were glad to receive all your comments as the journey progressed.

This is the Exit Strategy Delivery crew signing off: Hermann Brinkschulte, Ed Watson, William (Scuppers/Billy) Norrie, and Vern Burkhardt.

Good morning! It’s wonderful.

Skill testing questions: Why do we turn off the water pressure system every time we use water?

Why do we turn on the red light on our headlamp every time we go forward from the cockpit?

Why do we always wear our PFD when above deck even in calm seas?

When approaching the mouth to the Strait of Juan de Fuca why do we contact Prince Rupert Traffic? And who are they and their role? And Seattle Traffic for bonus points.

What is a steaming light?

What are the Collision regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea and do they apply to sailboats?

What are the key attributes of crew in an offshore passage?

Why do people go to sea in a small craft like a sailboat?

How do you prepare meals and wash the dishes in a boat that is heeled over and bouncing about due to wind wave action?

What are the two most likely circumstances that will cause crew to need to abandon shop?

What are some of the approaches to dealing with gale or storm force winds?

Why do we head offshore rather than being comfortable at home?

What does it feel like to be bone tired to the point of fatigue like you have never experienced?

Should you be concerned when sailing in fog?

What attributes make for a great helmsperson?

What happens when you are so tired you fall asleep while driving the boat in a standing position?

Vern

PS: Fog is as thick as I’ve ever seen. Needing to keep a close watch.

Progress through the night. At 532 AM we were into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. At 700 there was no wind little wind as in 3 knots so charging the batteries which was definitely needed.

Scuppers’ enthusiasm and appreciation of being at sea, seeing wildlife, good meals, great sailing, telling interesting stories, and reflecting on his past medical work never ends. It is infectious. He is thrilled to be back seeing Canadian land despite the fact we are currently proceeding parallel with but outside the inbound shipping lane.

Many offshore deliveries in our region begin with "and Vern is putting a crew together..." The fortunate folks who take up the opportunity will discover much about Vern.

He began sailboat racing in 1975. He has raced in many local races including Swiftsure International Yacht Race, Pacific NW (previously Oregon) Offshore Race, Southern Straits, Round the County, Van Isle 360, Patos Island, and long distance and round the buoy races at Royal Victoria Yacht Club. He raced in the Marblehead (Boston to Halifax) in 2015. Vern has participated in thirteen Vic Maui races and skippered fourteen deliveries of boats from Hawaii. The first was in 1992 and the most recent was SV Phoenix in 2022. In 2018 he delivered a Beneteau 49 from Halifax to New York City, and thence from the British Virgin Islands through the Panama Canal, to Galapagos Islands, Marquesas, Hawaii, and on to Victoria. In 2019 he skippered SV Lexicon, a Gorbon 53, from St Petersberg Florida to Colón Panama. In 2020 he skippered the delivery of SV One Fine Day, an Island Packet 44, from Hawaii to Victoria. He has also delivered boats up and down the North American coast including to Mexico and San Diego, and from San Diego to Anacortes Washington and to Victoria and Vancouver BC (e.g.; Farr 60, Beneteau 50, Beneteau 40.7, Scandi 52, Freedom 45). The most recent was the delivery of SV Arietta, an XP44, from Los Angeles to Vancouver BC in December 2022. He has sailed over 100k nautical miles.

Vern was the Chair of the Swiftsure International Yacht race 2011 through 2018.

His first sailboat was JJ Flash, a C&C 27, followed by Sea Bee II which was a C&C 38. He currently owns a Silverton 35, a power boat, but spends more time sailing than using the power boat.

Ship’s Log June 21 Northern Summer Solstice

110 nm to Cape Flattery at noon
COG 360
SOG 6.6 K

Under motor in 4-8 Kt Northerly breeze ( ie directly on the nose)

All is well with plenty of fuel and the Barn is in sight!

Daylight was evident at 03:15 this special morning at watch change, clear and flat calm with breeze building slowly through the afternoon as predicted. So we are forgoing another night and day and night of tacking back and forth North, for the Iron Genoa plowing straight at-Em! And giving us an expected PM arrival tomorrow to Victoria! it’s been a great month but ENOUGH!

“BASTA !!!“ in Español; our women are waiting ! (AND we for them !!!)

Last time I was here in Pixie 3 years ago with no engine. I drifted for three days on the Swiftsure Bank awaiting any breeze, good fun but not this year with Exit Strategy powering along.

So far so good …
Respectfully Yours

After starting my watch at 6:00 Scupper and I visit in the cockpit and it is so interesting how, by getting to know your buddy better and better, the friendship grows story by story or experience by experience.
Because we are not able to sail we'll motor right for home.

Don’t worry life is great even when we’re not sailing.
Surrounded by albatross showing off their flighting skills and competing with the dolphins in the water for our attention.

Vern made the greatest impression by serving a second to none hot full breakfast in the sun. What on earth can top this moment? Just thinking about it makes me feel so happy.

I needed to share this because it might be one of the best moments in life.

0034 June 21 - before the Solstice

Good early morning.

Of six fishing boats within view only one is broadcasting AIS. They are visible not by navigation lights; rather by their halogen lights that light up their vessel and are visible from a long distance. At night they are drifting but one still has to be vigilant to ensure they don’t have long nets extending from them.

Stars are visible but the moon is absent. As is the wind. And a night without moonlight is dark, indeed dark with horizon absent.

Hermann has joined us at San Francisco to complete the delivery and he's got a fair bit of sailing under his belt.

From Hermann: "I started sailing 25 years ago, starting with dinghies and beachcats on the local lake in Germany.

Next was the Baltic Sea to Denmark from Ruegen in Germany.

After some training, I chartered a vessel to sail the Gulf Islands or motored with family.

I've sailed in Florida as crew and twice the BVI and St Lucia with family.

The big one so far was around Vancouver Island at the end of October in 2018 and from Hawaii to Tahiti as crew on Mahina Tiarre with John and Amanda Neal.

My usual sailing is on Wednesday night on Mystral.

Sailing with Vern and Billy gives me a great opportunity to learn a lot and I'm excited to get the chance, sure they will have a lot of fun."

Ship’s Log June 20 Noon
Lat: 44:45 N
Long: 124257 W

275 nm from Strait of Juan de Fuca.

We departed Puerto Vallarta four weeks ago today and we can almost see the barn door of home.

After refueling in Cresent City yesterday, it is a balancing act to sail or motor without running out of breeze or diesel and yet be home for Christmas.

Meanwhile great meals are being prepared and fishing season is open.

Everyone is healthy and enjoying our first taste of downwind sailing this afternoon.

Light air or no air is forecasted for our Summer Solstice. And warmer days.

Respectfully yours,
Scuppers
