Looking to offer a vegan climb actually its a hike, you don't climb as in rope climbing of Mount Kilimanjaro in October.

Afterwards there is a option for a Safari and or down time on the beach in Zanzibar. The safari and the beach time do not have to be as part of the group as people have different

wants and we can accommodate everyone's preferences.

October is at the end of the driest time to do Mnt Kili consequently planning ahead is key to getting permits etc which we will do.

The routes will be either the Marangu where you stay in wooden huts or the Machame route which is a tenting option.

All your gear, the tents, the food is carried up, you just walk with a day pack.

The porters, chef and guide are allocated to the walkers and you walk up as a team.

For those who are experienced backpackers/climbers who want more of a challenge there are other routes we can use.

The least amount time that the Kilimanjaro portion will take that includes down time after you arrive, the post trip down time and building in a few acclimatization days as you walk to make it easy on everyone and give all the best chance of summiting is at least 8 or 9 Nights.

The link below take you to the route comparisons as well as a day by day outline of the Marangu and Machame routes.

What activities do vegan travelerโ€™s prefer?

What does a vegan traveler want when they travel is the better questions as there are so many different ways of arrival at following a vegan lifestyle.

Essentially the vegan traveler is just like any other traveler, they want to experience this world.

They may eat differently however like everyone else they want to experience the iconic, the urban, the rural, culture, local vegan culinary, scenery, the people of the country, that new adventure of sights, smells, sounds of the new places they are experiencing.

However what vegan do activity/tour wise differs widely as eating vegan is a personal choice and it does not have conditional preset principles of activities that everyone has to adhere to and follow to be regarded as vegan.

Some come to the vegan lifestyle via

Compassion for animals,
Others come to it through bad health,
Others from the practice of a spiritual way of life,
Others from a combination of all 3,
Some from an inquisitiveness of what the vegan eating lifestyle is all about.

As an example going on a vegan tour of South Africa (or really any country that you visit) its the range of the activities that is the difference for the vegan traveler:

Some may want to do a few great white shark caged dives ( you donโ€™t need to be scuba certified) others wont.
Some may want to visit animal shelters, other wont.
Some may want to visit wildlife rehabilitation centers, others wont.
Some may want to have food preparation classes in the tour, others are not interested in this activity.

Some vegan travelers donโ€™t drink wine so they are not interested in the Cape Winelands, others only drink vegan wine (which we can accommodate on a Cape Winelands tour) and other vegan travelers will drink anything.

Some vegan travelers may want to visit the rural village area, maybe take a guided walk down the wild coast eating basic vegan meals, others will stick to the urban centers where you have more food choices.

The common denominator is the vegan meals whether you are in the city, the rural areas on a cultural tour and or on safari which we will ensure these are taken care of.

Sure current world wide circumstances don't make for easy International travel however there is a African proverb that talks to this moment:

"However long the night, the dawn will break"

When that moment arrives for you,a vegan Africa safari awaits.

We are in a covid transitional state with the used to total freedom not happening yet, however the covid lock down cant go and do anything restrictions are becoming a quality of life that is fast fading.

Being on a Vegan Africa safari is one of the safest least exposed experiences in the world.

You are outdoors, huge open spaces, the climate is great, and there is very low to none at all population densities.

In addition dining is usually in the open air, and social distancing has always been a quality element of a Africa safari anyway as folks like to be low keyed in there own space in between game drives, during meals etc. Most camps have the capability of offering private dining,

Most safari camps has lodging isolation built into the living space meaning there has always been space and privacy between tents/living spaces and most camps have spacious, airy and large walk in style en suite tents complete with outdoor showers.

Spaciousness is a key quality across all the different safari areas.

Your own custom designed Vegan Africa safari is available to you and with the rise in popularity of vegan/plant based some Africa Safari camps/lodges across Southern and East Africa safari areas have brought in specific vegan/plant based consultant high quality dedicated vegan menus are available.

In this transition time when most safari personal are still wearing masks safari staff have learnt to smile with their eyes!

A safari is one of the most sustainable community based tourism endeavors as invariably the majority of the safari camp/lodge staff are from the local area and the
disposable income that is spent by a visit to a safari lodge/camp filters down to remote local communities which often is one of the sustaining elements for that community.

Since the safari camp staff cannot greet you with the fullness of song and smile due to abiding by temporary mask rules, the smile behind the masks, the eye to contact, the sense of appreciation to all who visit that camp is palatable.

A Vegan Africa safari is one of the top tourist experience one can have on this planet of ours and at the same time contributing to the well being of so many people.

That's what the smile behind the masks are saying: We missed you, thank you for your visit and we welcome you with open hands and appreciative hearts.

We custom design Vegan Africa safaris for singles, couples, families, from small to larger groups with a focus on leisure safaris, dedicated photography safaris, walking safaris, canoeing safaris, kayaking safaris..so many choices.

While Cape Town has seen a increase of dedicated vegan restaurants, bakeries and many restaurants having from a few vegan options to many option, during the '20 covid lockdown heading into 2021,Cape Town has seen another increase in vegan/plant based food options.

On a recent released updated survey from a Cape Town media guide there is:

1) 1 new dedicated vegan restaurant
2) A luxury waterfront hotel new restaurant that has a separate vegan menu.
3) A new gluten free bakery/health food store that also stocks plant based milks and other items.
4) In the Cape Winelands an Italian inspired restaurant with many vegan options.
5) A boutique luxury restaurant located on the Atlantic ocean has full vegan options.
6) A new burger joint with an extensive plant based menu to choose from.

Then there is a new farm to restaurant opening in Newlands and another restaurant that has a increasingly vegan menu.

Besides the dedicated vegan culinary markets, the other general culinary farmers markets have many vegan vendors.

Lastly there is a pop vegan kitchen at the Hout bay market.

We custom design vegan Africa safaris and South Africa tours, and can combine Southern Africa, East Africa and a Uganda gorilla safari( your guide is a local vegetarian himself) per your request.

Hi Stephen

Thanks very much. Itโ€™s been a tough adjustment being back in the office today after such a wonderful time.

The rest of the trip was amazing. Rhino Post โ€“ specifically the Plains Camp โ€“ was a truly unforgettable experience.

The walking portions themselves were really cool, but even more than that we really loved being out in a much more rustic, intimate setting where we truly were unplugged for a few days.

Our guide Mo was great, and also the other folks that were there were are really nice and the whole combination made for such an amazing few days that weโ€™re already talking about when weโ€™ll go back!

JoBurg was fine โ€“ we didnโ€™t really leave the hotel except to go to the shopping mall that was attached to it and so didnโ€™t really get to see much of the city.

I think next time weโ€™d probably skip it, though of course understood why it made sense to spend a night there given our travel schedule.

The Seychelles were fantastic. That Hilton was really great with the villa up on the mountain (but not too far from the beach) with our own infinity pool! We spent the day laying in the pool and drinking champagne until the fruit bats came out and scared Jill away! And then of course the Four Seasons Descroches was fantastic โ€“ basically having our own island to explore via bicycle.

We found all of these little beach spots where we snorkeled and paddleboarded, and I did some awesome diving while we were there.

The only thing we werenโ€™t really prepared for was how expensive all of the meals were there โ€“ I guess it makes sense since everything has to be brought in, but paying USD $80 for a casual lunch and then USD $400 for dinner was a bit of a surprise, but we didnโ€™t mind splurging for the honeymoon.

So all-in-all, an truly unique experience and a once-in-a-lifetime trip!

Thanks so much for working with me to put everything together โ€“ I donโ€™t think the Plains Camp is something we would have discovered trying to book on our own. We also really enjoyed our time with Martin.

In terms of what we would change โ€“ I think our only regret was not spending a bit more time in certain places! I think we would have liked to have had another day in CPT / wine country and another day at the Plains Camp. 14 days seems like a long time, but we didnโ€™t account for how much time traveling would eat up โ€“ basically 2 days on each end โ€“ which left us with closer to 10 days.

Anyway โ€“ it simply gives us reason to go back to South Africa in the future. And at that point Iโ€™ll definitely be reaching back out!

If youโ€™d like me to leave a review somewhere (like on TripAdvisor) weโ€™d be happy to do so! Weโ€™re planning to do that for Martin and for Rhino Post over the next week or so.

All of our Africa Safaris are custom designed, and can be combined with a walking and or private Lodge Safari.
The benefit of doing this type of South Africa Safari as well as a private lodge safari is that it gives more chances for animal sightings.

Stephen:

The Africa trip was awesome, and we can hardly believe we were there after being home a couple of days.

We saw the Big 5 in Kruger alone. We counted more than 200 elephants on the boat trip on the Chobe River, and at one point there were 17 giraffe along the shoreline.

A Kruger highlight was watching a leopard eat an impala it had dragged up a tree the night before (we saw the impala the night before and went back the next morning).

Vic Falls wasnโ€™t overwhelmingly spectacular because of the low water, but we did get a good view of it, and took a helicopter ride to see it from the air. All the border crossings went smoothly, but were not terribly efficient.

I think Eliza and I both agree that the overall highlight of the trip was our interaction with the Bushmen at the Grasslands Lodge. They took us out (with our host) to look at the plants they use, see how they get water from tubers, and how they start fires. The second interaction was to watch their games and dances. And, they came to see us off on the plane. Apparently Paula (our host) had told them we really enjoyed the movie โ€˜The Gods Must be Crazy (which was our inspiration for this trip), and the elder Bushman presented us with a Coke bottle before we boarded the planeโ€”such a sweet moment!

We also were very impressed with Robben Island and the Apartheid Museum. We also saw gorillas in Bwindi Park, but it was more strenuous trek than we were prepared for.

The only glitches were minor. Other than British Airways going on strike (theyโ€™re off my list), we had the confusion about payment at the Elephant Hills Resort, and we had to cut the morning tour of Soweto short because the guide was not aware our flight from Joburg to Hoedspruit had been moved up. We did get to Soweto for a brief visit.

All-told, the accommodations were great and the guides, too, although the Soweto guide had such a thick accent that we could hardly understand him.

And we enjoyed the time with Ibra in Uganda, who said he met you at a retreat in India.

So, there are a bunch of random thoughts. Would we do it again?

Absolutely!

Thanks.

Gordy

This was written about 3 weeks ago for US travel agents.

Greetings all,

Following up from last weeks e mail, here are 2 random thoughts on the virus:

1) Countries that have mandatory TB vaccinations like India,South Africa etc are showing overall lower rates currently (this can change in a moment) than other countries.

Portugal next to Spain is a good example of this. Spain had it hard whereas Portugal did not, India and South Africa are showing only slight virus impacts

2) Places such as living in Southern India with high temperature's or in Africa where the immune system is strengthened through lifestyle's that are very different to the West, may have an advantage in that one of the keys for fighting the virus is a strong immune system.

In the West people generally do not live lifestyles that support immunity strengthening therefore knowledge and the practice of self help lifestyle's are not the norm, and accordingly the understanding of diet, nutrition and choices for well being are lacking.

โ€œWhen something bad happens you have three choices.

You can either let it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you.โ€ โ€” Dr. Seuss

This downtime is a period that can be used to prepare for the future.
