South Kensington… Anyone know the original name of this area? Now a familiar name on the Tube map, it is our museum quarter in London… but it is SO much more than that. Here is a vibrant centre for knowledge and learning, key to progress in Victorian London and home of one of our greatest universities. Imperial College, ranked consistently in the top 10 universities of the world, was once the Imperial Institute (picture 2). With expansion after WWII it’s beautiful building was destroyed and replaced by modern laboratories, lecture halls and facilities to create a rival centre for scientific and technological education to those of the USA. Albert, husband to Queen Victoria and Prince Consort was quite a remarkable man. There are so many places named after him in London… here we have the Royal Albert Hall and the Albert Memorial, both built after his death in 1861. How exquisite... how precious... how valuable! So valuable that a magnificent chapel was created for it in Paris! The Crown of Thorns was saved from destruction in the Norte Dame fire recently.
