Have you ever taken a bamboo raft tour on the Martha Brae River in Jamaica? Me neither but I can guarantee this excursion will be first on my list for my next trip there! 🤸🏾‍♀️🇯🇲

Legend says that Martha Brae town and river got their name from a Taino witch tortured by Spanish settlers looking for a chest of gold. After she shared the location of it, she used her witchcraft to change the river's path and sealed the entrance to the cave full of gold. 😮

While we may never know if there really is gold, you can be sure that you will get an entertaining story from your guide as you float down that same river on a bamboo raft.

While each resort will have a unique vibe, most will have at minimum the same base offering that includes accommodations, meals, snacks, and drinks.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Whenever this holiday rolls around I get excited because … well… here in the U.S. we celebrate by consuming tacos and margaritas or cervezas! 😋🍻

But, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of independence and victory for the Mexican people. On this day in 1862, 2000 volunteer soldiers were able to defeat 6000 invading French troops who attempted to claim the Mexican territory for Napoleon III. In honor of the battle won, this day was later deemed a national holiday.

Over the years, some people think that we celebrate May the 5th more in the U.S. than in Mexico. Jordan Mendoza and Maria Jimenez Moya wrote an interesting article as to why.

Woo Hoo! It's my Birthday! 🎉

I usually don't make a big deal out of it (unless its a milestone birthday). But I am finding that as I get older, and in the light of the hovering pandemic, there are more and more reasons to be grateful for another year of life.

Hey... Listen, I can say, from personal experience, that the passport wait times right now are... lengthy (a nice way of putting it)! 😩 I had to pull out some big guns to get passports renewed before our trip and still had to delay it 2 days. Getting anyone on the phone is impossible. It takes hours and a lot of patience. Appointments at passports centers all over the country are RARE. Please, please, please, if you are planning international travel, check your passport today! Current wait times for processing is 18 weeks!!! 😳

1. On average, Americans spend more than 20 hours researching and price comparing online when planning a vacation solo. This is the time spent just picking a flight and hotel. Add on another whopping 20-30+ more hours if researching a location you’ve never been to or planning activities, tours, meals, etc.

2. Your travel agent will plan your trip using insider knowledge of your destination and is there to help you before, during, and after your trip should things come up and you need support.

3. When booking with a travel agent, you can put down a small deposit for your trip and then set up a payment plan to pay periodically instead of all at once.

4. Travel agents have access to additional discounts and special amenities that you might not find on an online booking site.

5. It’s so relieving to have some things just taken off your plate. Vacations are supposed to be fun, not stressful. A travel agent will take care of a lot of the legwork that goes into planning a vacation so you don’t have to worry about it.

My travel blanket.

When I was a teenager, many moons ago, my aunt compared me to Linus, Charlie Brown’s lil’ friend, because I was always with a blanket while in the house. It makes sense though. I hate being cold and as we know, the temperature changes from flight to flight as the winds blow. I use it in hotel rooms also because it is comforting to me (a little piece of home) and sometimes the air conditioning is so wonky I’m freezing at night! I started taking it on weekend road trips, my parent’s house for long visits, and anywhere where I think it ‘might” get cold.

It’s warm, soft, fluffy, folds into a pillow, has a trolly sleeve to slide it securely over the handle of your carry-on luggage, and comes in cools prints!

My dream vacation (currently) is a trip to the beautiful Zanzibar Islands of Tanzania. Unguja, affectionately known as just Zanzibar, is the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. It is located on the Eastern side of Africa, in the Indian ocean.

Why I love it: The beaches are magnificent! Miles of beautiful white sand and warm, turquoise water. In addition to exotic beaches, Zanzibar is known for its history, rich culture, and famous spice plantations.

Its civilization is OLD and I love history! It is believed that the islands have had human inhabitants dating back at least 20,000 years! I imagine a walk through the streets of the capital city, Stone Town is like walking a day in the life of someone very cool of another time.

As a popular honeymoon destination, it’s also very well suited for families with children or seniors. There is something for everyone to do.

For me, one of the biggest appeals, next to the near-perfect beaches, is that it’s only about 25 kilometers (a short ferry ride) off the coast of the Tanzanian mainland. There, you can hike Mount Kilimanjaro, take in a multi-day safari to observe some of Africa’s big game animals, or just enjoy the rich culture and beauty the Tanzanian mainland has to offer. A safari is 100% on my bucket list of things to do. Many people go on a Safari and then mosey on over to Zanzibar for rest and relaxation afterward.

Because of the tropical climate and warm water, Zanzibar is renowned for coral reefs and rich marine diversity making it a great spot for snorkeling and diving. Zanzibar is also home to several endangered species. One of which is the Zanzibar Red Colobus, a primate only found on the Zanzibar main island. That makes it officially, official that there is only one place like it in the world and I just want to see it for myself!

Who else gets ready for a family vacation by making ALL the lists? It can’t be just me. I have a checklist for everything from which medicines to pack to how many hair-ties my daughter and I will need each day. True Story. I have a checklist for my doggos; their toys, blankies, & snacks too. I make sure they are up on their vaccinations and grooming. I plan out a cleaning schedule for the house to maximize my chances of returning to a clean house instead of a ransacked one because we were busy packing. I plan out our outfits and make a checklist so I don’t forget anything. I know! It’s a bit much but I can’t help it. I keep everything in a spreadsheet. Go ahead… laugh. I’ll wait.

Now, please don’t think that means that everything is perfect in the process. As a matter of fact, no one in my family cares one bit about these lists, and usually, I’m walking around waving a piece of paper at them sounding like Charlie Brown’s mom. They DON’T care! We are going on a family vacay in less than three weeks so, you can imagine what’s happening in my world right now. How do you prepare for your vacation?
