How often do you pick up your phone to check the time and end up looking at your various apps instead of your surroundings? We'd all like to think we're not connected to our phones while traveling, but something as simple as checking the time can lead to scrolling through Instagram or checking your email when you could be enjoying time with your family. That's why we recommend wearing a watch! ⌚️

If you find a coffee shop, food truck bookstore or restaurant you like while traveling, don’t make it a one-time visit. Go back again—and again. After a couple of days, the staff will probably start to recognize you. In a small way, you’ll become part of the community and feel more connected. And your family now has a “favorite” spot to reminisce about and return to.

Take just a few photos each day. Limiting the number of pictures you shoot each day forces you to focus on quality over quantity. You may look more closely and think more deeply about your surroundings. You’ll also spend less time with your phone and more with your family—maybe even adding a photo countdown to your daily routine.

For travelers anxious to get back into the world, things are finally starting to look up. In the U.S., the U.K., and a few other lucky places, the number of fully vaccinated adults is quickly rising. Though some countries are still being ravaged by Covid, others with encouraging numbers have been opening their borders to tourism.

If you live in one of these fortunate places, it might sound like a good time to book a bucket-list summer vacation. Except that one big question remains: What about the kids? No vaccines have been cleared yet for children under 16, though pediatric trials are taking place. Experts don’t expect kids to be widely vaccinated until the fall, at earliest—and possibly not until 2022. We broke down all the info to provide advice on traveling with unvaccinated little ones. Head to the link in our bio for more.

Road trips can be magical. RV adventures have been a highlight of the pandemic. Covid has prompted many families to spent time exploring their own backyards. But if you’re longing to leave the country for a spell, no judgment here. Just one question: Where can we go?

There are also a few countries and territories—four, to be exact—that are currently welcoming U.S. travelers, and which the CDC considers safe to visit. They’re all in the Caribbean, and they all have strict requirements for visitors, such as pre-approval, Covid tests, and in some cases, staying only in certain hotels. It’s no accident that these spots have had extremely low infection rates, and they intend to keep it that way.

We rounded up the latest information from tourism bureaus and other official government sources, but it’s no substitute for your own research. When planning a trip, check official sites, make sure you understand all the rules, and remember that things can still change on a dime.

Anguilla, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, and the British Virgin Islands are all Level 1 risk, and are all welcoming tourists--with strict requirements.

“National Park adventures on a budget,” is how Andrea Leesch describes her family’s travel style. The journey itself is a big part of the fun that member Andrea's family has traveling. She builds in plenty of stops for sightseeing and activities. She’s inspired by the way she traveled as a child, touring the U.S. in a red Dodge Caravan. (“Two adults, four kids and a car topper.”)

We talked to Andrea about the gear that changed their travels, why she always brings pennies along for the ride, and how you can change the way you see your trip—and make the experience better for everyone.

Travel is one of the best ways to bring the past to life for children. It’s no different for Black history, which many people focus on in February, but is equally important the rest of the year.

We’re shining the spotlight on some U.S. cities that families often visit for their charm, beaches, food, or fun—but can also provide powerful lessons in African-American history and culture.

Destinations where kids can learn about this important aspect of U.S. history include St. Augustine, Florida, where slavery began in the U.S., Montgomery, Alabama, the center of the Civil Rights Movement, Memphis, Tennessee, Louisville, Kentucky, Annapolis, Maryland.

When you start traveling again, take a random bus route. Hop on a public bus and ride it all the way to the end of the line and back again. You may find yourself passing through neighborhoods few tourists see—suburbs, ethnic enclaves, industrial areas. You’ll get a feel for the color and rhythm of local life. Plus, kids often dig public transportation!

When Tara Cannon of Pint Size Pilot Family Travel Adventures had children, she knew she didn't want to stop traveling. Prior to having children, she and her husband Rann were very enthusiastic world travelers and figured that ""having a couple little people along for the ride wouldn’t have to change anything."" They've traveled the world with their children, using Vancouver as their home base.

With a passion for photography, skiing, hiking, and wilderness adventures, Tara has used her blog as a resource for families traveling with children of all ages since 2012, often figuring things out along the way. Tara chatted with us about her blog, adventure travel, her favorite travel apps, and more.

For some people, getting a plane with kids is adventurous. Tara Cannon and her husband have taken their kids to remote islands and Scandinavian outposts, and found bold experiences in cities too.

Travel Tip: Ignore price guarantees. Many travel brands offer an extra refund if you find a lower price elsewhere. But price guarantees are loaded with conditions, complications, and loopholes. Unless you’re willing to spend lots of time checking prices and following up with claims, you’re better off just ignoring the promises.

She’s not just a pretty picture. Or even a few thousand. Tash Haynes’s blog and Instagram feed are loaded with gorgeous images of her family—either in their hometown of Tacoma, Washington, or exploring the world. Just as inspiring as the shots are Tash’s messages about strength, justice, and parenthood.

She makes it look easy, but Tash has had more than her fair share of hardship. She’s written candidly about growing up in foster-care, and getting to know her birth family as an adult.

Today, she is raising three kids in different phases of childhood. (Wisdom is 8, Courage is 2 and Glory just 2 months old). She and her husband, Ike, run their own wedding and portrait photography business. And though she never left Tacoma as a child, she has more than made up for it since.

Tash shared her travel tips with The Expedition, plus her advice for families who want to get (a little) closer to her photography skills.

The professional photographer, influencer and content creator behind and wisdomandcourage.com shares her family-travel and photography tips.
