There’s been a lot of changes here in the 3 years since my mum passed me the reins. This morning I was admiring the beautiful morning and had forgotten the blood, sweat and tears that went in to one particular project....The deck! Made from reclaimed pallets, a tonne of scaffold boards and sheer bloody determination (stubbornness?!)

The short(-ish) version..
Phase 1-Clearing the ‘Secret Garden’. I’d never used a chainsaw before 🤦‍♀️ (what could go wrong?!)
Phase 2 -building sleeper flower beds, levelling the ground
Phase 3 -sourcing 40 odd pallets and getting them home in a Ford Fiesta rental. I did more than 1 trip it’s safe to say!
Phase 4- arranging and levelling the pallets. They are heavy! 💪
Phase 5- Road trip through France with a tonne of scaffold boards, unloading, getting them down.
Phase 6- putting up trellis and planting.

The final picture is what it looked like this morning. Some of the plants have died back for winter and there’s still things to finish but I just appreciated the hard work that went into it this morning. Sometimes you forget the journey you’ve been through to achieve a goal.. It’s good to remind yourself once in a while!

House of the Vines

Hi! I’d like to welcome you to our page. Let me tell you a bit about C’an Las Vinyas...

My mum bought the plot of land (abandoned vineyard), house (derelict farm building) in the mid 1980s. (pictured above) She had a vision and created this little oasis in the valley still surrounded by traditional vineyards to this day. We spent all of our holidays here as children in various states of construction, it’s fair to say, it’s been a family affair.

The region is famous for Moscatel dessert wine which is made by our local Cooperativa wine bodega, which is conveniently down the road. All of the surrounding land is still worked by the same families since she bought it.

It’s both a beautiful and unforgiving land in a geographical context. Nestled between mountains where thunder storms bounce off the land mass and rain torrents down in the winter. The brief winter (by UK standards but by no means to be underestimated!) gives to long balmy nights in Spring and hot summers where everything longs for the distant rains but creates the most beautiful mediterranean garden, green, fruitful, full of life.
