Norway knows how to party! We ended our expedition in Bergen and stepped right into Constitution Day. This celebration of Norway’s independence from Denmark in 1814 brings out national pride of the people as well as their hardy spirt of fun - in a way that was pretty darn impressive. Most women were in their national dress - which they are given at age 14 and it is meant to last their whole lifetime given the $7K+ cost. The skirts wisely have an expandable waist band. Men have to wait until they are older for this gift from their family.

Being all dressed up doesn’t stop anyone from enjoying the party. After an hour long parade at 10 AM they are still up for the good times at 10 PM and way beyond that as the sun doesn’t set until after 11 PM.

The town of Reine in the Lofoten Islands gave us some iconic views. huge mountains with a little red cottages in the sleepy fishing village of three hundred residents. of course they also get lots of visitors so there were people there to hike and kayak, even though it is early spring.

After our hike, we sailed to the national mountain of Norway. Apparently a few decades ago the country took a vote on what mountain should be their symbol and this is the winner.

Upon our return, we were greeted with waffles, which is a national favorite snack here in Norway.

I ❤️ all things Norwegian!

We have two National Geographic certified and magazine published photographers on board with us. On our last stop in Svabard I took a photo walk around part of the island of Spitsbergen with one of these talented ladies.

I got lots of tips for shooting interesting photographs, but then she also asked if I would like some shots of me in the environment. I am really delighted with the way these turned out, especially since she just used my iPhone to take these images!

It is this type of thing that are part of what makes traveling with this company so very special

Today we had our first polar bear sighting. It was a “binocular” sighting as the bear was far away but the ship’s crew had it on a camera so we could follow along. We are onboard the Lindblad National Geographic Resolution. Any sighting of the these amazing marine mammals in the wild is always a thrilling thing no matter how close or far away they are.
