On Saturday, we visited this modest and yet incredible little church of St Petka in Donji Matejevac. It was built on the remains of a Roman building, renovated during the second half of the 19th century and it is a representative of post-Byzantine church architecture. It is located at the foot of Čegar hill and it carries a large historical importance.

The First Serbian Uprising battle took place in 1809 at this place known as the Čegar hill. Here, Serbian commander Stevan Sinđelić and his brave soldiers lost their lives defending the city of Niš. This monument represents one of the most iconic cultural heritage of our country.
Our guide Sasha and his group took a challenging task to ride bicycles and visit this amazing landmark. It was their first checkpoint, but their goal was Kamenički Vis, which they successfully reached. We congratulate them on this, we couldn't be more proud! Way to go, guys! 🚲😁🌏

The church of St. Panteleimon was built in 1878 and it is the first church built in the liberated Niš. The remains of a 7th century settlement and a small ancient church dating back to the 4th century were found on the grounds of this church.
Skull Tower is a must-see monument for everyone visiting Niš. Built in 1809, after the battle at Čegar during the First Serbian Uprising. Originally, there were 952 skulls of brave Serbian soldiers embedded in 4 stone walls, today there are only 54 skulls and you can see all of them.
