Good Morning!
The sunrise was too amazing this morning to not share, even at a crisp 52 degrees here in sunny California.

Here’s to brighter days ahead!

☕️ 🌴🌊

Do you live in snow?

I love the first snowfall, but it’s probably because I don’t have to live in it anymore. I used to lament the first snowfall as it signified the end of fall with many months of gloom in my home state of Minnesota. But now that I only see snow if I drive to it or fly into it, I am like a giddy child when I can play in it.

It’s one of the things I love about living in California. I can live at the beach, but in two hours....this!

I am also just ready for all things Christmas already. I don’t know why, it’s so early, maybe I am just welcoming some much needed holiday cheer. Anyone else feeling festive a bit early?

Do you subscribe to the theory that when a door closes a window opens?

I am a firm believer in seizing windows of opportunity. It’s just a matter of finding one and barreling through.

There are 55 days left of this insane year, but who’s counting 👀 ?

Find your window and leap through it so next year can bring great things!

Back to where it all began... The birth of democracy. Thank you Polis, otherwise known as Athens. Deep breath...

While I am baffled at how we are so polarized here in this great nation, I am left to trust our democratic system to do what it has done for hundreds of years before me. We will get through this. We always do. Remember to exhale... We are one, no matter what the next few hours or days or years bring.

Beautiful or Creepy?

Sometimes the strangest things are hauntingly beautiful.

Traveling through Ireland on a quest for castles and pubs, I stumbled upon some of the most beautiful abbeys. Walking through unlocked pieces of history from the Potato Famine to The Troubles (or Na Trioblóidí in Irish).

The history of other civilizations fascinates me as you probably know, so this was just an unexpected way to learn and experience another culture.

Where are you enjoying the season?

I’m loving the harvest vibes in the Golden State...

Something that amazes me about California is the ability to experience such diverse landscapes...

Central California can almost feel like stepping into the heartland of the Midwest with small town feels.

But within two hours you can be back at the beach, high in the mountains, deep in the Sequoias, lost in the Sand Dunes, drunk in a vineyard, starstruck in Hollywood or livin’ la vida loca en Mexico.

Take in every inch of wherever the season takes you. Make it an adventure!

Does already feel like a bust?

I don’t know about you, but without the mega haunting this season, trick-or-treating on hiatus, and house parties nixed in Los Angeles county, I am left feeling like a lost soul as my favorite holiday approaches - especially since I am typically producing two of the largest in the country right about now ( and ) ...

So I thought I would give you my 2020 freaky faves in LA County to ignite your mischievous little spirit:

1. A tricked out dinner in a creepy open-air waterfront cabana overlooking my favorite haunted ocean liner ( ) is a great place to start! Especially since it was designed by yours truly

2. Don’t let the season pass without a shout out to my friends at - probably the most legit haunt experience you will have in 2020 thanks to one of my favorite haunt designers

3. And if you haven’t picked up a pumpkin yet, is where it’s at.

4. If you’ve already got a ticket to then bravo! You will be in for a thrill, if not, it can still be a creepy spring - I think tickets are still available for sometime in March.

5. And last but not least I’ve also teamed up my production co with some friends at for pop-up scares coming your way Oct 29-31 just outside of Los Angeles, New York and Dallas, so stay tuned!

While it isn’t our typical fright-packed season, I think we can still get our spook on.

Did you know you can go wine tasting in Malibu California?

I’m not saying Napa, Sonoma, San Ynez, Lompoc and Temecula aren’t amazing, but what I am saying is that you don’t need to go that far for a fantastic day-drinking excursion.

Here’s my perfect itinerary for a marathon day of wining in Los Angeles County :

10:00am Brunch at

12:00pm Tasting at

1:00pm Wine Safari at MFW

2:00pm Live Jazz and Wine at (pack a cheese, crackers, and fruit lunch picnic)

4:00pm Barn at

4:45pm Tasting at (book a private tasting in the back room, even add dinner from the Old Place to be served here) otherwise...

5:45pm Dinner at The Old Place

Have you been to Scotland?

Castle Rock - the longest continually occupied location in Scotland, is home to the most besieged place in all of Scotland, and the most attacked fortress in the world, Edinburg Castle.

It’s age coupled on top of its royal heritage and violent history make it the second most visited place in the country.

The imposing fortress has dominated the capital city’s skyline and Royal Mile as a Royal household since at least the 12th Century with King David’s reign though settlements have dated back to the Iron and Bronze ages (1st or 2nd century AD).

Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son, King James (the first King of Scotland and England) were some of the last Royal residents though it is still occupied today.

Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities in all of Europe. This Gothic gem is often overlooked, but I say sip your way through Scotland with a bottle of Scotch and find yourself ever enamored with this county and it’s people. Check out my stories for places to stay, dine, and whisky-taste

Have you been to an archeological dig site?

Delos is one is my favorites because it’s an entire island dedicated to archeology - rich in ancient history dating back to the 1st millennia BC.

Facing East toward the ancient lake of Delos, the Naxian lions are the guardians of the birthplace and shrine of Apollo in the ancient port and religious Mecca of Delos.

Check out my other Greece photos for a list of islands you never knew you had to visit in Greece.

Did you “Jump” with Van Halen?

I grew up performing his hits for the animals in my backyard and then had the pleasure of getting to know this legend personally.

While he was shocked at my inability to play the drums no matter how many hours we spent in his home studio, I still had a kick-ass time trying.

He was a master of music, a true music prodigy with a heart of gold. Eddie would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.

We have lost one of the great ones way too soon.

You will be missed my friend, God speed....

I know your guitar is waiting for you up there and if your piano isn’t, we’ll just crane it in as usual. I can’t wait to rock out with you in the next life...

📍I took this after dec’ing out Eddie house for one of his epic parties in Los Angeles, California

(👉🏽swipe)
I took this on the floor of Eddie’s foyer circa 2007 - he was donating this guitar for a great cause - ever the giving heart...

If you walk in the footsteps of great leaders throughout history, will your journey be impactful too? 🤔

One of the things I love about visiting royal palaces all over the globe is the idea that someone with significant impact once stood where I stand, and it’s their legacy that continues to tell their story to all who follow.

It’s a constant reminder for me to not leave anything undone or unsaid, that we all leave an imprint on this world - no matter the size. What will your imprint and legacy be?

How do the mountains make you feel?

About a month ago I asked you guys which you preferred, the mountains or the desert and 98% of you chose the mountains! So I thought it time to renew my vows with the this weekend.

I promise to do my part to protect you, to keep you clear of my waste and trash, to visit you responsibly and to remember to become one with nature.

There is something so rejuvenating about being immersed in the wild - when everything around you is alive and breathing life into your soul.

The beauty of California’s are often overlooked, and they are sadly in the spotlight every year as millions of acres burn.

This year alone we have seen the devastation of over 8000 fires scorching over 3 million of our 33 million acres of forest.

An exploding population, plus a 3 degree increase in average temperature on earth, coupled on top of our forest density being on average 3x times what it should be, the best way we can save our forests are to actively manage and care for them.

Since 57% of are owned by the federal government and 3% are owned by the state, that means the remaining 40% are privately owned.

We can help both federally and privately by supporting the ( Foundation) and the ( )

These foundations both have programs to help private California forest owners maintain their land and educate them on controlled burns, debris clearing, tree maintenance and reforestation after wildfires.

While this may seem elementary, it’s important to note that the California wildfires affect us all. This season, the carbon emissions from forest fires exceeded our cars and heavy machinery emissions.

So as you enjoy your trips to our national forests, be a conscious supporter of them too. =

Isn’t life just better with color in it?

In a time filled with racial intolerance and social injustices, I have to say, life would be so boring if we were all the same. Embrace our different colors. There’s so much beauty in our shades.

Is that January I see at the top of that mountain?

We can do it. We WILL climb that mountain.

Let’s treat it like a steep hike. Don’t look up, don’t look back, just keep your head down and focus on something else (perhaps voting if you’re American) and keep on moving - one foot in front of the other until we feel that 2021 sun on our faces and the burn of accomplishment in our chests.

I don’t know what else next year will bring, but I do know it will bring the end of 2020. (92 days but who’s counting?) 👀

📍Somewhere in the Anti-Atlas Mountains enamored by the beauty and nourishment that can grow out of extreme conditions. I can close my eyes and literally smell the roses and feel the silky Argan oil lingering in the air. This earth of ours though... ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

If you know me then you know that I am in constant search of unique cultures filled with beautiful peoples off the beaten path.

Curaçao is one of those places.

One of the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) in the Southern Dutch Caribbean.

Set apart by its Old Town, Willemstad, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the historic Isle is just a few miles off the coast of Venezuela.

It’s by far my favorite of the ABC islands - and certainly the most overlooked.

It’s also one of the only islands where I choose to stay in Old Town opposed to a beach resort. It’s a great way to break up the islands if you are visiting more than one. I suggest - a boutique museum hotel on a cobbled street in the heart of town. But if you just can’t forgo the beach, opt for the majestic - the most expansive luxury beach resort on the island.

The beaches here are virtually untouched making it the perfect destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Here are my top 5 beaches:
1. Cas Abao - Great Cabanas, restaurants and bar, what more do you need?

2. Grote Knip & Playa Grandi - Arguably the most beautiful sands and water on the island. The top spot for snorkeling with sea turtles, great Dutch fare and nice cabanas. Popular with tourists and locals, visit during the week.

3. Playa Santa Cruz - a posh beach with luxe cabanas and massages on the sand.

4. Playa Laguna - A stunning cove beach teaming with aquatic life perfect for snorkeling.

5. Porto Mari - A perfect beach to just chill on a lounger, grab a book from the little library, swim to the floating raft or near shore with the wild piggies!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

I am drawn to Abbeys and Castles.

I think it’s the idea of all the history and adventure that came before me. There is a kinetic energy that I always feel when traversing through ruins.

I wonder if the people of the future will feel our energy once we are gone...

What’s your favorite season?
Mine is Autumn and it’s officially here.

Don’t ask me where the year has gone because I don’t have a clue, but I am surely glad it’s almost over!

I live on the West Coast so my seasons aren’t dramatic like the East Coast or the Midwest. That’s why I always try to make a mad dash North East to marvel at the splendor of the leaves changing and delight in harvest season fare.

📍I am fan of Philadelphia in Fall, it’s the perfect spot to embrace the crisp air of Fall. Warm pot pies and mulled wine in landmark restaurants surrounded by rich history, plus these leaves though. I mean...

Yas! It’s road trip time now that all of the crowds are back home!

The Ruins of Tulum.

Forget the five star resorts, the overdone instagram-friendly street signs, swings, and sculptures built in the last 10 years.

Explore the 800 year-old ruins of a Mayan fortress originally named Zamá (place of the dawning sun) built by one of the oldest civilizations on earth - and yes, go at dawn.

Then trek to a SECRET cenote deep in the jungle for a swim or cave dive (and I don’t mean Gran Cenote).

Then end the day swapping adventure stories over fresh authentic fare and a mezcal tasting flight at sunset just about anywhere in town.

THAT’s Tulum.

You can lay on the beach and practice your yoga, but don’t forget to commune with the beautiful local people and the glory of pristine nature that surrounds you.

Otherwise you will have miss the point of Tulum. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Do you ever long for a simpler life? This year has definitely shined a light on the frivolity in my life. Why do we collect completely irrelevant things?

These past few weeks I have been taking the much needed time to purge - my closets, my drawers, my cabinets, my garage...

This floating village in Southern Thailand reminds me just how little we actually need to be content. Anyone else decluttering lately? ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

That moment when you stumble upon a stone cottage in the woods...

I have said it before and I will say it again, My favorite hikes are the ones that take you on an adventure of discovery.

Sure trails and trail heads are amazing, but I prefer to get lost in the woods...You?

With Hawaii in lock down again, not only can you not gather on the beach, you can’t gather in the water either.

It’s funny, I live on the ocean here in California and we never had that rule, I think it’s because the water is so cold, no one is gathering in it even in the summer! Ha!

Oh how I wish I was with our ohana (family) in Hawaii.

Kailua Beach is one of my favorite beaches of all the islands. Check out my Hawaii stories pin for more deets on my hidden Hawaiian hot spots so you can get to planning your next escape. I know I am!

Have you been to the second largest city in the world?

I feel like China gets overlooked by many when it comes to travel, but I have to say, it’s a magnificent place and Shanghai, an intriguing city (when you can see it).

Smog and air quality are definitely factors in the larger cities, I would avoid summer travel and Chinese New Year all together.

For most, I would suggest travel in May, June and September, but If you love adventure and culture, I have to say Winter is fantastic (and that’s coming from someone who isn’t that fond of the cold).

My last trip to China was in January (a great time to avoid the smog and crowds) to see some of the oldest and most breath-taking festivals in the world.

I stopped in Harbin to see the famous Ice Festival where it was -50F and then hopped an 8 hour flight south to Zigong for the Lantern Festival where it was 70F. (Yes, for those of you with a map, it took nearly 8 hours to get just half way across the country!)

China is massive so there isn’t a single answer to when to travel, it all depends on where you are going and why.

Just be a true adventurer, think outside the box, visit China. It’s untapped beauty is highly under-rated. The people are welcoming, the food is amazing and the beauty is vast.

I was going to post a beautiful photo, but then I woke up to this.

So I thought it more important to shed light on the devastating wild fires ravaging California and much of the West Coast of the United States and how each one of you can help:

Have you identified your retreat to reset?

Forests are teaming with life. It’s so important for me to get back in nature regularly for a reset and settle my mind, body and spirit.

As the world starts to re-emerge from its lengthy forced pause (likely the only one we will see in our lifetime), remember to take the time you need in nature or otherwise for your wellbeing.

Now, more than ever, we have been reconnected to self. Let’s not lose the work we have done to become better humans.

Let’s not wait for another pandemic to find ourselves again. Make a plan to reconnect regularly. Do this one thing for yourself.

What I love about Los Angeles County is how diverse it can be. One moment I am kicking up sand at my beach pad, the next, I am trekking through mountains and valleys filled with peacocks, horses and some of my favorite restaurants in all of California.

Remember I told you I would give you some of my favorite hidden restaurants on the way up the coast?

Well this is one of them - The Old Place in Cornell (a couple miles north of Malibu.) Originally a post office from 1884 - 1904, this tiny peace of history serves up big game and delightful comfort food for the win in a classic country setting and the owners are as warm as the sweltering summer nights.

Would you believe that old truck is a coffee house? And the water tower a table you can dine at?

This place oozes cool, and boy have they been busy custom building all these socially-distanced rustic nooks for dining al fresco. Don’t forget to pop in to for a bottle to wash it all down (more on them later - another fave).

But shhhhh, don’t tell anyone, we wouldn’t want to disturb the reclusive A-listers who frequent the joint. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
