▪️In 755, a young man named Abd Al-Rahman ibn Mu’awiyah al-Ummawi, last of his dynasty, concluded the final stop of his ardorous journey. Following a decade of exile, after being hunted and nearly killed on a number of occasions be landed at the Spanish port city of Malaga. For the next 3 decades, this young man would carve a name and a legacy for himself, regaining his birthright and bringing much of the Iberian Peninsula under Muslim rule for the next 8 centuries.

▪️His crowning achievement? The spectacular Great Mosque of Cordoba. A massive structure which incorporates Ummyyad, Visgothic and Roman elements. The complex was expanded numerous times by Abd Al-Rahman’s descendants over the next 200 years, with the final expansion completed in 988 by the Caliph Al-Mansur.

▪️The most iconic and recognizable portions of the mosque include its storied Mihrab, historic gate of Bab Al-Wuzara and the iconic prayer hall with its red and gold pillars arches the Ummayyad style.

“The Conqueror's Mosque” or Fatih Camii in Turkish was named after and commissioned by the Sultan Mehmed II, who at just 21 years of age brought the Byzantine Empire to a dramatic end with the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. During his thirty-one year rule, he would go expandthe Ottoman Empire to include the Turkish kingdoms and territories of Asia Minor, Bosnia, Serbia, and Albania. The mosque was construction began on 1463 and concluded in 1470. The 1766 Istanbul earthquake destroyed the mosque nearly in its entirety, it was rebuilt with entirely new plan between 1767 and 1771.

The original complex included includes eight medreses, a library, a hospital, a dervish inn (taphane), a caravanserai,a market, a hamam, a primary school (mektep) and a public kitchen which served food to the poor. Various tombs were added at a later date.

The beautiful Mezquita Mayor De Granada.
The first fully functional mosque built in Granada since the 1400s! On a hill overlooking the city and the majestic , this place is a must visit. The athan is done out loud from this minaret! Come and visit with IHIP and experience this amazing place!
