A viewpoint along the Ma Pi Leng Pass overlooking the Sông Nho Quế (or Nho Quế river), a 192 km long river that runs mostly parallel to the Vietnam - China border.

There is a story in Vietnamese culture to explain the origin of the river:

There used to be a huge mountain in Ha Giang province that blocked the river effort from spreading life to the barren land on the other side, which was completely arrid. The River God tried to negotiate with the Mountain God and asked him to move aside for the river to flow through.

However, the Mountain God pretended to be deaf and stayed still for years. Knowing that history, the King of Heaven ordered the Thunder God to settle the situation.

One day, the sky was scattered with deafening thunderbolts. The Thunder God swung down his sword onto the mountain, causing an explosion that severed the mountain in two! The stream of water then rushed into the newly created valley and brought forth life to the barren lands 🌱

Can't believe we missed yesterday!

Two years ago we got to ski in the shadow of one of the most easily-recognized mountains in the world - The Matterhorn 🏔️

One of our favourite things about being in the mountains is how their grandeur just makes you feel so small, but in an incredibly powerful way. We find that their beauty and reminder of smallness really just puts all of life's problems into perspective. At the end of the day, that thing that your coworker said that annoyed you, is really not that big of a deal....

A triple summit day! ⛰️⛰️⛰️

In summer of 2020, we completed an approximately 20km loop in the Forbidden Plateau area of Strathcona Provincial Park that took us to the summits of Mt Albert Edward (photo 3), Mt Frink (photo 4), and Castlecrag Mountain (photo5). We started and finished the loop at Kwai Lake, where we camped the nights before and of the circuit.

This was an interesting hike to complete, as there wasn't a ton of information available about the route. Using topo maps we'd guessed the distance to be around 17km, but looking at our recorded track at the end of the day we hiked just over 20.

Have you ever taken your dog ski touring?
❄️🏔️
Before you go, here's a few things we've learned that will help keep everyone safe and happy:

1️⃣ Back to the Basics: make sure your dog has solid sit, stay, and recall commands

🤏🏼 Start Small: go out for some shorter tracks, starting with maybe only a couple hours at a time to get them used to the new environment and activity. Keep your group small to start, too

🐾 Protect Those Paws: investing in a solid pair of boots that won't come off when they run through the snow (we love Polar Trex from ). Booties will help prevent snowballs building up between their toes, as well as give protection against sharp ski/board edges

💧 Don't Forget Hydration: your dog will need to drink lots of water throughout the day -- eating snow will not be enough! Remember to pack them high calorie snacks too. If your dog is comfortable wearing a pack, they can carry some of the load

🏠 Sometimes the smartest thing... is to leave them at home (sad, we know). If avalanche danger is higher, or you're going out in a large group or for an overnight, the safest decision is likely for your pup to stay home.

🚩 Make sure you save this post so you can remember these tips when you take your pup out in the snow with you!

An iconic Canadian view 🏔️

Can you name this popular glacial lake nestled in the Alberta Rockies? It's one of the most visited outdoor destinations in Canada!,

In fact, it's become so popular over the years that you can no longer drive your own vehicle to this lake - you'll have to take a Parks Canada shuttle or public transit. In the winter, the road is closed to even these vehicles, but there are cross country ski tracks set along the road to the Ten Peaks Viewpoint.

Have you been to this beautiful spot?

When you're so excited for winter, you want to just wrap yourself right up in a big ol' blanket of snow!! 😅

I wish I could say that I got myself into that position on purpose, but I did have a lot of fun doing it!

These were an epic few days of early-season skiing in Switzerland two years ago - and of course no Swiss trip into the mountains would be complete without hot chocolate ☕

Have you had an epic and/or hilarious ski or snowboard crash? Tell us about it in the comments!

A failed summit attempt: listening to the weather.

When we visited Rocky Mountain NP one late May, we set our sights on what we thought would be an achievable summit in the early season - Mt Ida. As we drove up to Milner Pass to the beginning of the trail, the snowbanks lining the road grew taller...

We began our hike up on snow, but as we gained elevation the exposed slopes became bare. Shortly after we reached a lower unnamed sub-peak, we began to hear distant pangs of thunder. We ultimately made the decision to turn around and start our descent as the clouds rolled in and the wind blew harder.

This one is definitely on our list to try again next time we come back!

Some more photos from our Golden Hinde trek in September 2020.

Notice how chill Ryan looks standing on the summit holding the register tube 😅 (Photo 4)

We also took the day before our Hinde summit day to climb the lesser-known and less frequented My Burman. Photos 1-3 are from hiking up to Burman. It definitely affords stunning views of the Hinde and the Behinde!

Check out the last photo to see a perfect reflection of the Golden Hinde in Schjelderup Lake 👀

Our Stoke for the winter is definitely building - can't wait to get out for some more bluebird days in the snow! 🌞

Do you ever look back through your camera roll and realize how many incredible moments you've been lucky enough to experience and capture? That's me tonight, as I dove deep into our photos... I'm feeling so grateful.

➡️ Add a photo that makes you feel grateful for an experience you've had!

Photo 1- smiling through the surprising cold at the summit of Acatenango in Guatemala, after having been awake half the night watching Fuego erupt and then getting up at 4am and hiking in the dark from halfway up the mountain to the summit for sunrise.

Photo 2- sunset over our tent pad at Arnica lake on our last night on the trail after we finished summiting the Golden Hinde, the tallest mountain on Vancouver Island.

Photo 3- sunset from our ridge camping spot during our hike up Mt Myra with Ryan's brother Danny. Adventures with family just hit different.

Ha Giang Loop motorcycle ride PT2

These four days were some of the most incredible of our whole trip. Scenery aside - which was absolutely stunning - our group was just top notch too. Everyone was so supportive of each other, whether someone took a fall, or got food poisoning 😬 (hey it's bound to happen eventually. Pro tip: don't eat the fresh vegetables!)

Scroll to the end for a photo of the whole crew!

Ha Giang Loop motorcycle tour 🏍️

This 4-day tour was without a doubt one of our top 3 highlights of visiting Vietnam this year. Not only was the actual riding spectacular -- the twisties!! -- but the scenery was otherworldly; breathtaking.

Around every new bend in the road, was another incredible viewpoint. Our guides were fantastic, helping us navigate not only the roads and tourist destinations, but also the police 🚨😅

The group that we were with was absolutely incredible, too, and we made friends from Australia, Korea, France and more. After every day of riding, we ate an incredible meal together at a homestay followed by epic karaoke 🎤

Maligne Canyon - another stop on our road trip from Victoria to Halifax two years ago.

I'm really enjoying looking back on photos from previous fall seasons, but it's making me realize that as much as I love the convenience of taking pictures on my phone, I miss my DSLR...

A photo from Bridal Veil Falls - but not the one you expect.

When we drove across the country from Victoria to Halifax two years ago, we stopped at as many places we could along the way that we'd had on our "must see" list, including here to see the cascading falls. The park was somewhat busy, with a few families and other groups taking photos in front of the falls, so we found a quieter spot along the creek flowing down beside the trail.

Sometimes the weather doesn't always work out, and that's okay. We've had to pivot our plans more than a few times to account for changing conditions. But no matter how or where you get outside, no matter if you have incredible views or not - it's always worth it just to get out there 💛🩵

The vibrant details from a fall walk in the sun ☀️🍁

One thing I've found so unique to the fall in Nova Scotia is the way the ferns turn so entirely firey and golden! I don't recall seeing that anywhere else that I've lived in the fall...

I also can't believe how incredibly warm it's been over the past few days here! 21C in the middle of October?! Meanwhile Calgary is getting snow 😯❄️

Do you have something like the golden NS ferns that's seasonally unique to your area?

The colourful beauty of Cape Breton, NS 🍁🍂

I've had the chance to show a friend from BC around Nova Scotia the past few days and it's been really fun to explore more of the area together, including a fall colours boat cruise yesterday. The east coast colours are simply unrivaled anywhere else we've been!
