Ha Giang Loop motorcycle ride PT2

These four days were some of the most incredible of our whole trip. Scenery aside - which was absolutely stunning - our group was just top notch too. Everyone was so supportive of each other, whether someone took a fall, or got food poisoning 😬 (hey it's bound to happen eventually. Pro tip: don't eat the fresh vegetables!)

Scroll to the end for a photo of the whole crew!

Ha Giang Loop motorcycle tour 🏍️

This 4-day tour was without a doubt one of our top 3 highlights of visiting Vietnam this year. Not only was the actual riding spectacular -- the twisties!! -- but the scenery was otherworldly; breathtaking.

Around every new bend in the road, was another incredible viewpoint. Our guides were fantastic, helping us navigate not only the roads and tourist destinations, but also the police 🚨😅

The group that we were with was absolutely incredible, too, and we made friends from Australia, Korea, France and more. After every day of riding, we ate an incredible meal together at a homestay followed by epic karaoke 🎤

Maligne Canyon - another stop on our road trip from Victoria to Halifax two years ago.

I'm really enjoying looking back on photos from previous fall seasons, but it's making me realize that as much as I love the convenience of taking pictures on my phone, I miss my DSLR...

A photo from Bridal Veil Falls - but not the one you expect.

When we drove across the country from Victoria to Halifax two years ago, we stopped at as many places we could along the way that we'd had on our "must see" list, including here to see the cascading falls. The park was somewhat busy, with a few families and other groups taking photos in front of the falls, so we found a quieter spot along the creek flowing down beside the trail.

Sometimes the weather doesn't always work out, and that's okay. We've had to pivot our plans more than a few times to account for changing conditions. But no matter how or where you get outside, no matter if you have incredible views or not - it's always worth it just to get out there 💛🩵

The vibrant details from a fall walk in the sun ☀️🍁

One thing I've found so unique to the fall in Nova Scotia is the way the ferns turn so entirely firey and golden! I don't recall seeing that anywhere else that I've lived in the fall...

I also can't believe how incredibly warm it's been over the past few days here! 21C in the middle of October?! Meanwhile Calgary is getting snow 😯❄️

Do you have something like the golden NS ferns that's seasonally unique to your area?

The colourful beauty of Cape Breton, NS 🍁🍂

I've had the chance to show a friend from BC around Nova Scotia the past few days and it's been really fun to explore more of the area together, including a fall colours boat cruise yesterday. The east coast colours are simply unrivaled anywhere else we've been!

Pluto 🤝 canoe

This was quite the adventure, paddling 20km across Great Central Lake with our 70lb pup in the canoe with us.
This was Pluto's second canoe ride, and he was much less chill with this one compared to the first... He kept wanting to jump out and go say hi to our friends and Jay in their kayaks!

We managed to keep him in the boat for the whole time, but it was tricky to paddle at times with him constantly shifting his weight around. 🛶

We made sure to pack the essentials* when we took Pluto on his first overnight hiking trip last year 🥂

*Always make sure when you're hiking to actually pack the 10 essentials: navigation, headlamp, sun protection, first aid, knife/multi-tool, lighter/matches, shelter, extra food, water and layers.

I realized the other day, that if I can't get out for new grand adventures right now, the next best thing is going through photos from past adventures. It's so easy to get caught in thinking about that next thing, or the trip that you want to take but just don't have time right now, and forget to take a step back and reflect on all the awesome things you've done up to now.
Like, over the course of 3 days, driving 8 hours, paddling over 40km (half in the rain) and hiking 30km, all to see Canada's highest waterfall!

These photos are from Day 1 of our trip to Della Falls, which has a nearly vertical drop of 1,445ft 😯 The first leg of the journey (not including the 4-hour drive from Victoria) was a 20km paddle across Great Central Lake - which we had the fortune of doing mostly in the rain! I would definitely consider Day 1 of this trip to have been Type 2 fun... But it got better from there!

Yesterday we capped off our long weekend by joining a lovely group hike in the Sooke hills. It was really a perfect day, with just enough sunshine to keep us warm but not too hot. Pluto did great too! 🐶

A little... Monday mountain magic for your feed!

During our trip to Smithers in February, Katie's parents took us up this long, unrelenting climb of a snowshoe which finally opened up to this beautiful alpine meadow. There's nothing better than finding magical places with the people that mean the most ❤️✨

Cheers to a new week and making the most of the moments we get to spend together.

Winter: heck yeah!

We spent a beautiful bluebird week above the clouds on the mountains around Smithers, BC at the beginning of the month in our quest to find some snow ❄️

We had fun ripping short laps on the only powder section we could find and got lots of transition practice with our new skins. Hoping to get back into the mountains this coming weekend too!

Last weekend we headed up to Mt Washington again - but this time for Katie to take part in Avalanche Safety Training level 1 course with a couple friends.

With more ski touring and snowshoeing on this winter's agenda, we wanted to brush up on our skills to mitigate our risk in the backcountry. Ryan and Pluto got out for an adventure too -- check out the last photo to see Pluto's new snowsuit! (And haircut!)

We introduced Pluto to some real powder over the weekend on Mt Washington ❄️
We spent the afternoon on Saturday exploring on our snowshoes while our skis got worked on in town in preparation for the upcoming season.
Pluto had an absolute ball, and then became one... A snowball that is!

Here's hoping for the snow to keep coming so we can start getting safely out into the backcountry on this beautiful island we call home 🏔️🏠

Our last hike in Penticton was a snowy one! Unfortunately the snow didn't stick 😞 but it did obscure what would have been a fabulous view of the lake!!

The temps kept us nice and cool on the steep climb up and the even steeper descent...

The old Gypsum Mine! 🍁🍂

We found this gem along the Cabot Trail thanks to a friend of Katie's. Just a short hike along a flat, wide trail, this spot is a must-see -- especially in the fall. We were awed by the colours surrounding the old quarry lake, and it was allllmost warm enough to swim in, too.

Happy Friday!

Last weekend for Thanksgiving we took Pluto for his first backpacking trip 🎒🐕 in Strathcona park.

We found the perfect pack for him from and made sure to let him get used to it without any weight to start.
