Magnolias in Kunming: A White Romance in Spring

While the northern regions remain blanketed in snow, I chose to visit Kunming, the city of eternal spring, to witness its blooming magnolias. Kunming, a city that seems untouched by winter, tells the story of spring in its own unique way.

Magnolias, the city tree of Kunming, are now in full bloom, as poetic as ever. Along streets and alleys, in parks and green spaces, their pure white, jade-like blossoms can be seen everywhere. They harmonize beautifully with Kunming’s blue skies, white clouds, and lush greenery, creating picturesque scenes at every turn.

Best Time to See Magnolias in Kunming

Now is the perfect season to enjoy Kunming’s magnolias. While a few early blooms have begun to wither, most are still in full bloom, exuding a faint, delicate fragrance.

Top Spots to See Magnolias in Kunming

1. Tanhua Temple Park
• Location: Tanhua Road, Panlong District, Kunming
• Time: Recommended during soft lighting in the morning or afternoon; 7:30 AM–6:30 PM (Note: Park closes at 6:30 PM)
• Highlights: Hundreds of magnolias beautifully complement the ancient architecture. A 400-year-old Udumbara tree also graces the site, making it an ideal spot for photos.

2. Zhenqing Taoist Temple
• Location: Tuodong Road, Panlong District, Kunming
• Time: Open all day; best visited in the morning or around afternoon tea time, 8:00 AM–5:30 PM
• Highlights: Home to a century-old magnolia tree. Enjoy tea under its blossoms, soaking in the tranquility and beauty. The nearby Caishen Hall offers an opportunity to pray for good fortune.

3. Magnolia Garden at Xishan
• Location: Xishan Scenic Area, Xishan District, Kunming
• Time: Open all day, 8:30 AM–5:00 PM

Can you imagine a place where you can see snow-capped mountains, colorful forests, deep blue alpine lakes, and various animals all at once?

📍 This is Majia Valley in Aba Prefecture, western Sichuan.

It’s about a 5-hour drive from Chengdu. I recommend staying overnight in Maerkang on the first day—not only to acclimatize to the altitude but also because Maerkang, the prefectural capital of Aba, offers better accommodations. Start your trek the next day.

📝 Travel Tips:
🚶 The one-way trekking distance is 3 km, so a round trip is about 6 km. The altitude is 3,890 meters. We took about 6 hours to walk and take photos along the way. Walking slowly usually prevents altitude sickness.

📶 Note: There’s no signal at the summit.

🐕 One big advantage of this area is that you can bring your dog! It’s perfect for a weekend hike with your furry companion, and you’ll see many dogs in the scenic area.

🎫 Tickets + Sightseeing Bus: 95 RMB/person

📷 Must-visit photo spot: Qumei Lake
This spot features a beautiful swing with snow-capped mountains and colorful forests in the background, making it a perfect place for stunning photos!

Discover a Hidden Gem for Photos at the Temple of Heaven 🔍

No need for double exposure—watch as the Temple blends seamlessly with cloud patterns, creating a stunning scene.

Travelers, don’t forget to visit this spot during your trip to Beijing! ❗

🟡 Photo Tips:
1. On sunny days, the sky is clearer and appears bluer.
2. Visit early in the morning when it opens or late afternoon before closing for fewer crowds.
3. The architecture features red and colorful designs, so wearing white or black clothing works best for standout photos.

Have fun capturing your perfect shots!
