The weekly 12:30 pm Sunday concert at Centro Cultural Gonsalez Gallo in Chapala today presents the bolero. It is a style of romantic song from Cuba which has been embedded in Mexico for 110 years.

A typical Thursday afternoon in the Ajijic plaza. Celebrating the passing by of the Virgin, in this case “of the rosary”. Accompanied by Aztec dancers from Juanacatlán. No pics of the Virgin as she was not very animated.

Extravagant mariachi extravaganza tonight at Lakeside Little Theater. 12-player local celebrities Real Mariachi de Ajijic, with 15 junior mariachis, vocalists, a lasso-ist, 5 dancers including a “Cats” dancer and a fake tequila bottle. Relatives and friends Daniel, Juan-pi and his own compositions, Sergio, and at least two Luis’s.

Sorry, this was the last of three performances.

The crowd went crazy, and the performance continued in the theatre bar later.

Guests and friends, tell your birding friends that Lake Chapala birders (www.ChapalaBirders.com) report 114 species spotted here during July! The Golden Eagle (6 ft wingspan) was not spotted.

Inside info for our friends and guests! Free strings concert ia the Centro Cultural at the Ajijic Plaza Sunday August at 4 pm. It is the Festival del Lago summer music academy for advanced string students, but this free concert is not shown on their web page.

Casa Del Angel Feliz supports Festival del Lago as a host for faculty and students.

Guests and friends. Jazz at the Centro Cultural Gonsales Gallo in Chapala, “the old train station”. They have frequent free concerts, and changing archeological and art exhibits.

Notice the use of a flamenco box drum, using brushes and sometimes palms.

For those of you who are already aware of the Festival de Febrero annual chamber music event here in Ajijic, be aware that its younger sister the Festival del Lago will have performances July 31 to Aug 11.

In this pic, Frederik the Great plays flute in a chamber music piece with, among others, C.P.E. Bach accompanying on Moog synthesizer.

For your interest. The lot across the street is being developed. See the backhoe-loader. It will be a "Vinos Americas" wine and liquor store. Opening on to the Carretera, with unloading and parking in the lot behind on our street. The tree will remain.

I think this is good news because it will have an architect, should follow bylaws and zoning (yes those exist), and should be a reasonably good looking new build.

Hola friends and guests. While you are visiting your favorite vacation resort (us!) be sure to think of visiting some of our old colonial cities within an easy one-day drive or bus ride – Querétaro, Guanajuato, Morelia, San Miguel.

Today we are in Zacatecas. It was a rich silver mining town particularly 1600s to 1800s. Beautiful colonial architecture, pink sandstone, many museums including the museum of 5,000 masks. Pedestrian-friendly. We found some sidewalk cafes reminiscent of Europe. History. An ex-hacienda with 30 silversmith shops.

This will be controversial for some of you – I find the Zacatecas mezcal better than Oaxaca's - try Aztecali Reposado. Local specialty food – gorditas. Fine dining on the old bull ring. Excellent local vineyard with great restaurant.

At a higher altitude - nice weather even in the warmer months.
