Had a blast celebrating our 16 year wedding anniversary! My parents happened to be camping in Paso Robles and were able to watch the kids for a night! Andy and I have been together since 2007. We got to spend our anniversary in Cambria at Moonstone beach. We had a blast exploring and the highlight of our trip was getting to do a tour at Hearst Castle! We can’t wait to share about our trip in more details.

Here are some fun facts about Pigeon Point Lighthouse:
1. Tall and Sturdy: Pigeon Point Lighthouse stands at 115 feet tall, making it one of the tallest lighthouses on the U.S. West Coast.
2. Famous for Its Light: The lighthouse originally used a first-order Fresnel lens, which was one of the most powerful types of lenses used in lighthouses. The light could be seen up to 20 miles out at sea.
3. A Historic Icon: Pigeon Point Lighthouse was built in 1871, during a time when California’s coast was notorious for shipwrecks. It helped prevent countless accidents over the years.
4. No More Keepers: The lighthouse was fully automated in 1972, eliminating the need for lighthouse keepers. However, it still has a light that operates today, guiding ships along the coastline.
5. National Historic Landmark: Pigeon Point Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which helped secure funds for its restoration.
6. Wildlife Haven: The area around the lighthouse is a prime spot for wildlife watching. Visitors can spot whales, sea lions, and a variety of seabirds from the nearby cliffs.
7. Inspiration for the Name: The lighthouse was named after the “Pigeon’s Point” on maps, which was itself named for the Clipperton’s Pigeon, a bird sighted by early explorers in the region.
8. A Unique Stay: The lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a Victorian-style house, is now a hostel where visitors can spend the night, making for a unique and scenic getaway.
9. A Beautiful View: The lighthouse offers one of the most stunning coastal views along California’s Highway 1, making it a popular stop for photographers and nature lovers alike.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse combines rich history, stunning architecture, and spectacular coastal scenery, making it a beloved landmark!

Spent the perfect day soaking in the beauty of Cannery Row 🌊💙 From tide pooling along the rocky shores to hunting for the perfect sea glass, every moment felt like a coastal dream. 🐚✨ Had to stop for a classic sundae at Ghirardelli’s—because what’s a day at the coast without indulging in something sweet? 🍫🍦 Then it was off to the Monterey Bay Aquarium to explore the incredible marine life (those jellyfish are a must-see!). 🐠🐙 And of course, I couldn’t resist popping into all the adorable little shops that line the streets. From unique souvenirs to cute boutiques, there’s something magical about every corner here. 🛍️💕 If you’re looking for the perfect blend of nature, fun, and charm, Cannery Row is the place to be!

✨On a separate trip we walked the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trip and stopped in for some yummy ice cream.

✨What are some of your favorite places to visit while on Cannery Row? I still have a list of places we want to go and places we want to eat at.

Nestled on the rugged coastline of Pacific Grove, the Point Pinos Lighthouse stands as a timeless sentinel, guiding sailors through the shifting fog and dark waters of Monterey Bay. 🏖️ Built in 1855, it is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast, and it still shines its beacon across the vast ocean, a steady reminder of the strength and resilience of maritime history.

Walking up to the lighthouse, you’re greeted by its whitewashed exterior, which contrasts beautifully with the wild, windswept landscape surrounding it. The coastline here feels both serene and powerful—waves crashing against jagged rocks, the salty air filling your lungs, and the ever-present call of seabirds overhead. It’s easy to imagine the lives of the sailors who once relied on this beacon to guide them safely home.

Whether you’re here for the history, the views, or just to take a peaceful stroll through the nearby cypress forest, Point Pinos offers a sense of connection to the past and a grounding in the beauty of nature. The lighthouse still operates today, a living piece of history, and the small museum inside offers a glimpse into the lives of those who kept the light burning through foggy nights and stormy seas.

It’s one of those special places where you can take a step back in time while marveling at the untouched beauty of the California coastline. If you’re ever in the area, don’t miss the chance to visit this iconic spot—it’s more than just a landmark; it’s a piece of history that continues to shine.

Throw back to where our interest for travel sparked! This was back in our believe 2014. We were visiting family in Fillmore, Utah. Looking for something fun to do and stumped upon a magazine that had this place in there!! We decided we would set out to explore. Please note not to take a Honda Civic on these roads although we made it just fine it was an interesting drive out there 🤣. It is about an hour drive off the road on a dirt road. Most people go out there on quads or trucks.

The place was really cool to check out and actually there was someone who was stilling in the place at the time. They had left a note to please not touch there things but to come in a look around 🤣.

What are the random places you have explored?

Here is the story:

Hermit’s Cabin or Hermit’s Cave was built in 1929 by Bob Stinson. Bob returned home from World War I to find that his girlfriend had married someone else. He was traveling through Marjum pass near Delta Utah when his vehicle broke down. He decided to stay where he was and build a stone cabin enclosing a nearby small cave. He ended up becoming employed by the government to maintain the dirt road in the area and lived there until he was 70 years old.
