Sikorsky has advanced to the next phase of a DARPA project to develop an unmanned VTOL aircraft capable of flying all-weather missions from ships or land. The rotor blown wing VTOL tail-sitter is currently undergoing flight testing.The concept is part of a DARPA X-Plane program to develop a Class 3 Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Vertical Take Off and Landing aircraft that doesn't need special infrastructure on land or aboard ship, and can fly in "most weather conditions."The initial contract for the project was awarded to Sikorsky Innovations – the company's rapid prototyping group – back in 2013, with company president Paul Lemmo recently confirming that flight testing has been undertaken for at least the last 18 months as part of an earlier development phase.

Sikorsky says that the rotor blown wing design – which looks quite similar to Boeing's Heliwing project from the mid 1990s – was selected because "the constant airflow from the proprotor wash across the wing reduces drag in hover mode and when transitioning to forward flight, increasing cruise efficiencies and endurance."

Australia only boasts a few eVTOL makers so far, but it plans to become one of the top AAM hubs worldwide, which has a lot to do with the right kind of infrastructure. Clem Newton-Brown, CEO of Skyportz, the Australian startup that has been paving the way for electric air taxi service over the past five years, stated that using traditional airports and helipads for these innovative aircraft won't bring a revolution in air mobility. Most of the promised benefits of eVTOLs depend on having adequate infrastructure, specifically vertiports and short takeoff and landing runways.

This is why the Electra aircraft is particularly well-suited for air taxi operations. This spacious nine-seater is designed to take off and land within 150 feet (45.7 meters) at a slow speed, which makes it highly versatile in terms of infrastructure. For instance, it can operate in areas that don't have room for a traditional runway. It also means that it can access even smaller regional airports that aren't currently being used to their full potential.

Japan’s Biggest Helicopter Charter Company to Operate 50 Electric Air Taxis.

Eve Air Mobility's latest customer is one of the most important names in Japan's public aviation, and it sets another milestone on this Brazilian company's journey to conquer the Asia-Pacific region.

Eve is one of the very few eVTOL makers worldwide that are backed by an established, heavy-duty aviation player. Eve was set up as the AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) branch of Embraer, the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer, and it has currently reached a point of huge market success with letters of intent for almost 3,000 units of its battery-electric aircraft.

One of the latest customers is AirX, known as the biggest public helicopter charter service in Japan and one of the AAM pioneers in this country (it launched what is considered to be the first eVTOL test field in the Greater Tokyo Area). Based on the letter of intention signed by the two, Eve will deliver ten electric aircraft to AirX, with the option of 40 more.

Zuri is a name worth remembering in the European AAM (Advance Air Mobility) landscape. This Czech startup is developing a VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) that promises increased performance due to hybrid-electric propulsion; combined with a generous five-seat cabin, this could take Zuri's aircraft beyond the capabilities of electric air taxis and offer an efficient alternative for regional travel.
Last year, Zuri offered a unique immersive experience at Aero Friedrichshafen using a flight simulator, and it was the only one in the industry to do so for a pilot and four passengers at the same time. The experience was a great success and was introduced at a few more events in 2023. This year, the Czech company will introduce another novelty at the prestigious General Aviation event in Germany, in addition to the flight simulator.

The novelty is called Skeleton, and it's a large-scale ground testbed for Zuri's flagship eVTOL. Until now, Zuri has completed multiple flight tests using small-scale demonstrators; the most recent test drones with a 3.5-meter (11.4 feet) wingspan were so impressive that industry players became interested in their potential commercial use even though they were only intended for demonstrations.

Hopscotch Air, an air taxi operator, has added an all-electric aircraft to its fleet. The new all-electric aircraft, named Electron 5, promises top performance and luxurious comfort and has already grabbed the attention of two innovative aviation operators.
One of them is Hopscotch Air, which is known for providing air limo service in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and Canada. They’ve added the all-electric aircraft to their fleet, but it will still be a couple of years before it enters service. Another operator, Air2E in Berlin, has also signed an MoU with the Dutch startup to bring this new machine to Germany.

The Electron 5 is designed to fill the current gap in regional aviation. While eVTOLs are a great step towards emission-free transportation, having a longer range is crucial for regional air travel.

This aircraft has a range of 750 km (466 miles) with today’s batteries, making it capable of covering routes that exceed most mission profiles in both the USA and EU, which typically cover routes below 500 km (311 miles). Additionally, the Electron 5’s purely battery electric drive system offers over 50% reduction in operating costs compared to existing internal combustion engine (ICE) aircraft.

Founded in 1990, DTA Aircraft Manufacturer is headquartered in Montelimar, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France. The company manufacturers ultra light gyrocopters, trikes and wings. As of the end of 2023, the company has sold 595 aircraft in 33 countries. The company revealed in 2023 that they have designed and manufactured a passenger electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) multicopter aircraft and expect deliveries to take place in 2026.

The eVTOL-2 DTA is a two passenger eVTOL multicopter production model aircraft. The pilot and passenger sit one behind the other in a tandem seating configuration. The aircraft is being sold as an ultra-light aircraft. The cabin is completely enclosed with a canopy over the cockpit arrangement. The aircraft has clear gull-wing doors on both sides of the aircraft for easy entry and exit of the aircraft. The aircraft has full GPS flight enabled.

Less than a year after Whisper Aero unveiled its concept for an electric regional jet, the Tennessee-based company is proposing another use for its ultraquiet propulsion system: a 100-passenger electric airliner.

Whisper Aero CEO Mark Moore revealed the “Whisper Jetliner” concept on Monday at the Ohio Air Mobility Symposium. The company has also submitted a proposal for the design to NASA’s Advanced Aircraft for Sustainable Aviation (AACES) program, which the agency launched last year to “stimulate innovation and the development of advanced conceptual designs and technologies for commercial subsonic aircraft that could enter service around 2050.”

The Whisper Jetliner utilizes a larger iteration of the same ultraquiet electric ducted fan technology featured in the Whisper Jet, a concept for a nine-passenger electric aircraft that the company presented last summer at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Aviation Forum in San Diego, California.

Sikorsky is developing a hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (HEX/VTOL) tilt-wing demonstrator, one of a new family of hybrid rotorcraft that will also offer pilot-optional autonomous flight.There are so many companies building unconventional rotorcraft, many of which are electric or hybrid electric, that one more added to the growing list wouldn't warrant much attention. However, when the newest one is a major player in the aerospace world like Sikorsky, it's time to sit up and take notice.
The new HEX program by the Lockheed Martin subsidiary features three hybrid, autonomous rotorcraft. One is a conventional helicopter, while the second is a quadcopter with tiltable propulsion nacelles. But the party piece is a tilt-wing design that allows for vertical takeoffs and landings, as well as the ability to transition to winged horizontal flight for greater speed and range.

The goal is to combine high speed with a range in excess of 500 nm (575 miles, 926 km). The completed demonstrator will have a maximum gross weight of 9,000 lb (4,000 kg) and feature a 1.2 MW-class turbogenerator. In the meantime, Sikorsky Innovations and GE Aerospace are completing a hybrid-electric power systems testbed with a 600 KW electric motor for hover performance tests.
