Whenever we travel we like to check out the National Parks. Khao Yai National Park in Thailand certainly does not disappoint. It was the first national park ever established in Thailand and it’s not hard to understand why.

A visit to this park will surely garner you some impressive animal sightings including: elephants, northern pig-tailed macaques, barking deer, sambar deer, gibbons, porcupines, and civets. Other more elusive species seen from time to time are sun bears, Asian black bears, gaurs, otters, dholes and jackals.

Covering a total area of 2,168 sq km. the park features rainforests, grasslands, and evergreen forests. It is the first of 5 linked protected areas spanning from Khao Yai all the way to the Cambodian border constituting the D**g Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you’re keen on some camping there are two well-equipped campsites within the park. Or if you are suddenly inspired to stay a few days in this epic location, you can rent camping gear from the visitors center.

You can choose to explore the park alone via shorter trails that will take you to stunning waterfalls and offer good wildlife sightings. However, it is not possible to walk longer trails without a guide. It is for good reason though, as it is easy to get lost in the dense jungle and trails may be difficult to follow. You’re also guaranteed to see more wildlife and learn more about the environment when going with an experienced local guide.

We recommend Greenleaf Guesthouse & Tour. They are a family-run guesthouse near the park that offers clean, basic accommodations and incredible guides who can spot the smallest camouflaged tree snakes from a moving vehicle!

With nearly a century’s worth of experience in Antarctic waters is your go-to for exploring the land of penguins!

Believe it or not, Antarctica is a pretty busy place. Any number of ships can take you there, but how you experience this mysterious place and how deeply it touches you will depend in large part on who you travel with.

Polar Latitudes’ environmental leadership in these waters is apparent. They were the first to bring a program onboard every voyage and the first to join and support the Polar Science Collective which creates opportunities for research and public education through citizen science, leveraging the reach of polar travelers to enhance understanding and protection of the polar regions.

With more ships entering Antarctic waters, staffing them has become a challenge for many, but not for Polar Latitudes. Their Expedition Team averages 12 years of experience, with most of them returning year after year. Their experience and ability to work as a team provides a professional and safe experience while allowing you to take advantage of every opportunity Antarctica presents.

Smaller group sizes mean you’ll be on a first-name basis with the crew, have a more personalized adventure, and be able to more fully experience the vast, remote landscape (and the penguins) you came here for!

Did you know about tourism leakage?

How many times have you visited a tourist hotspot and noticed that there are still people living in run-down homes or begging on the street? Have you ever wondered why the receptionist at your hotel in Bali has an Australian accent? Have you heard stories of sewage leaking into the ocean?

Did you ever stop and wonder how or why such a popular destination, where money from tourism is pouring in, could have local people living on the street or lack adequate sanitation infrastructure?

Did you know that in developing countries like Thailand or Cuba it is estimated that 60-80% of profits from tourism LEAVE the country?

Foreign investors and companies shouldn’t be allowed to benefit while locals bear the brunt of increased costs of living, overcrowding, pollution, uncontrolled development, and resource scarcity.

Help by shopping and staying at local accomodations. Where you spend your money matters! Support help to and support local livelihoods!

Established in 1994 and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, National Public Lands Day is traditionally the nation's largest single-day volunteer effort. It celebrates the connection between people and green space in their community, inspires environmental stewardship, and encourages use of open space for education, recreation, and health benefits.

National Public Lands Day was established in 1994 to celebrate connection between people and green spaces in their community. The day is meant to inspire environmental stewardship, and encourage the use of open spaces for education, recreation, and health benefits.

It is the United State’s largest single day volunteer effort where hundreds of thousands of volunteers help to restore and preserve public lands of all kinds— from iconic national parks and rivers to local urban green spaces.

Wherever you live, show a little extra love and appreciation for these important and necessary spaces in our communities today!

In honor of this special day ALL national parks are free! There are also a handful of other free entrance days throughout the year. So mark your calendars and go visit one of the 423 parks within the national park system this year!

“(Pictures 1, 2) We took the bus from Madrid to Segovia for a day trip. When we got to Segovia we walked up to the top of the aqueduct which was constructed around the 1st century AD and through the BEAUTIFUL Jewish quarter to get to the Alcazar de Segovia. It is a medieval castle that looks like it hopped right out of a storybook! Inside we got to learn about all the history of different residents and the military academy that it once held.

(Picture 3) A cute little cafe with most delicious Pan con tomate and carrot cake in the La Latina neighborhood in Madrid!

(Pictures 3, 4) We loved visiting Playa de Maro along our drive north from Malaga (southern coast of Spain). There are two beach coves to enjoy and even a beach stand with drinks and food! “I’ve always been fascinated with Indian clothing and textiles. When I was little, I attended a daycare owned by an Indian woman and her family. They treated me as their own child and bought me my most cherished green Saree that I wore to one of their weddings at the age of 6.

So of course, when I got to India, I spent my first week in Delhi finding the perfect tailoring shop. I stumbled upon Varun’s family owned shop (Varun pictured left, his wife on my right, and their son) and instantly felt at ease. His wife was so friendly, allowing me try as many outfits as I wanted and helping me style them all. They also tailored my set to fit me best.

I decided a saree was a bit overkill considering they’re worn for larger events/weddings and considering how hot it was in India at the time, it would have been unbearable to wear. I settled on this yellow Kurti set made of cotton. A Kurti set includes the Kurti (knee-length shirt/tunic), Salwar (loose-fitting pants), and Dupatta (shawl-like scarf). Thanks to Varun and his family’s utmost kindness and patience to help me find this beautiful and breathable outfit - I felt as comfortable as I could during the heat wave that passed through India. I ended up wearing it to see the Taj Mahal, one of the 7 wonders of world!”

We can confidently say this was an adventure of a lifetime with .cuyabeno Our guide .s1lva was incredibly knowledgeable and had superhuman abilities to spot all kinds of animals from sloths, cayman, pythons and much, much more! We even saw critically endangered pink river dolphins and heard baby Jaguars in the jungle! Each day was packed with activities like jungle hikes, boat tours, and early morning bird watching. We easily fell asleep every night to the sounds of the jungle in our huts powered by solar with recycled water filtered from the river.

This scene comes from the remote and beautiful Haida Gwaii islands. These islands form the heartland of the Haida Nation, a people who have lived here for 13,000 years but were nearly destroyed by European colonists in the 1700’s and their expansion in the 1800’s. It wasn’t until 2009 that the colonial name (the Queen Charlotte Islands) was removed and replaced with Haida Gwaii. In present times the Haida Nation has regained some authority over the islands from the Canadian government with towns and villages slowly being returned to their original Haida names.

These islands are also of important biological significance. They contain 1/4 of the total remaining temperate rainforest on Earth! This ancient forest contains more terrestrial biomass than any other terrestrial ecosystem on earth!
