Whenever we travel we like to check out the National Parks. Khao Yai National Park in Thailand certainly does not disappoint. It was the first national park ever established in Thailand and it’s not hard to understand why.
A visit to this park will surely garner you some impressive animal sightings including: elephants, northern pig-tailed macaques, barking deer, sambar deer, gibbons, porcupines, and civets. Other more elusive species seen from time to time are sun bears, Asian black bears, gaurs, otters, dholes and jackals.
Covering a total area of 2,168 sq km. the park features rainforests, grasslands, and evergreen forests. It is the first of 5 linked protected areas spanning from Khao Yai all the way to the Cambodian border constituting the D**g Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you’re keen on some camping there are two well-equipped campsites within the park. Or if you are suddenly inspired to stay a few days in this epic location, you can rent camping gear from the visitors center.
You can choose to explore the park alone via shorter trails that will take you to stunning waterfalls and offer good wildlife sightings. However, it is not possible to walk longer trails without a guide. It is for good reason though, as it is easy to get lost in the dense jungle and trails may be difficult to follow. You’re also guaranteed to see more wildlife and learn more about the environment when going with an experienced local guide.
We recommend Greenleaf Guesthouse & Tour. They are a family-run guesthouse near the park that offers clean, basic accommodations and incredible guides who can spot the smallest camouflaged tree snakes from a moving vehicle!
