Just a couple of hours' drive to the west of Bangkok lies Kanchanaburi - a lovely little town on the river Kwai.
This town is famous for the historical events of WW2 when the Japanese constructed the "Death Railway" to create a crossing into Burma.
It is believed that more than 13,000 allied soldiers died in the construction of the bridge.
Today Kanchanaburi is a beautiful town with resorts all along the river and beautiful temples and monastries dotting the countryside.
It is also known for the War Museum and also for the production of the Blue Saphire gemstone jewellery.
If you plan to go, make sure you visit in the last week of November through the 1st week of December, when the Rivew Kwai Bridge Festival takes place.
A massive set is created on the riverfront and the entire historical story of the bombing of the Bridge is enacted through a Light and Sound Show.
Also on show will be one of the actual steam engines that was built for the train during World War 2 - this engine is only brought out during this show.
You will also be able to enjoy a large night market with all the attractions of a typical Thai market with clothes, shoes, art and other interesting items on display.
