After getting acquainted with my living arrangements, I walk to a local restaurant for breakfast.
Stepping out of the apartment complex, I took the time to take in my environment and the people who filled it. The sights stirred in me how very different this day in Kolkata would be from my typical day in Palm Springs. I reveled in the differences and marveled at the opportunities these three months would provide.
Cars crisscross in front of me in what I can only describe as "organized chaos." I feared the chaotic traffic during my first trip here a year ago, and I still cringe at it.
On a side street, three younger men are crossing the road together in a bond that I find fascinating in India. Each man showed a sense of concern, displayed as guidance, as they made their way through the traffic. A touch of the other's arm or shoulder or taking a friend's hand as they maneuver their way across the street.
The diversity of dress of these younger men also caught my attention. One in jeans and a pressed white dress shirt, one in jeans and a colorful, bright t-shirt, and the third wearing a lungi (a type of skirt for men). Each appeared comfortable in their dress and style.
Arrival Dec 15, 2022
My flight from Los Angles to Doha to Kolkata was relatively uneventful. However, the twenty hours in flight left me exhausted and needing deep sleep and some exercise - twenty hours is just too long to sit.
The Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata is beautiful and easy to navigate. Fortunately, signage is offered in English as well as Hindi and Bengali.
Getting through immigration should have been easy, but my focal dystonia (shaking) interrupted the process. I had to fill out a small form with all of the essential info: name, address, DOB, etc., on a quarter sheet of paper with tiny little boxes to be filled in for each letter – the worst for my writing abilities. After several attempts, I turned my illegible form in to the immigration officer, only to be told to fill out another. After explaining that the form was filled out to the best of my ability, he reluctantly completed one for me and stamped my passport. I was in.
