In a new study of the white sharks of Cape Cod, scientists with the non-profit research group Atlantic White Shark Conservancy estimate that 900+ white sharks visit the shallow waters along the Cape's eastern shoreline. Now believed to be the highest white shark population in the world.

Even if the skies get rough, I'm still looking up

What is "Milky Way season"? Milky Way season is the time of year when the Milky Way Galaxy is much more pronounced and visible in the night sky than other times of the year. Depending on your location, the best time of year to see the Milky Way is from February to June. April and May are peak visibility months. Cape Cod National Seashore is a favorite location for night sky photographers, as the limited light pollution yields excellent visibility for night sky images.

This type of shot is only possible early in the Milky Way “season” when the Milky Way reappears but rises low to the horizon in the very early morning hours (~4:00 AM).

Always an adventure...

ALERTruro:
A Portuguese man-of-war has washed up on Longnook Beach, Truro. These animals have long tentacles that can extend out many feet and can deliver a painful sting even after being washed up on the beach. These animals have appeared up and down the New England coast. Swimmers should avoid any contact with these animals and avoid contact with any encountered on the shore.

Today, Truro is one of the more exclusive towns on the Cape, noted for its affluent residences and the rolling hills and dunes along the coast. Truro is the site of the Highland Light (also known as the Cape Cod Light), the first lighthouse on Cape Cod. The first building was erected in 1797; the current lighthouse was built in 1857. The entire 430-ton light was moved about ​1⁄10 of a mile inland in 1996. By then, because of erosion, its original site was just ten yards from the edge of the shore cliffs.

For two days in February of 2013, a blizzard packing hurricane force winds pounded Cape Cod. One of the areas that suffered the most damage was Ballston Beach, a popular spot on Truro’s Atlantic-facing coastline. When high tide struck on the evening of February 8, the storm surge broke through the dunes, pushing water from the ocean all the way back to the Upper Pamet River Valley.
