The Winter solstice:
The winter solstice is an Old Nordic tradition celebrating the return of the sun. After the shortest day (today!) the nights grow shorter, the days longer and our moods grow brighter.
It is the time of year when the sun is lowest in the sky and the days thereafter become slower and brighter. The Vikings celebrated the winter solstice with a huge party and many toasts.
The first bowl was brought out in Odin's honour: For the Alfather and victory!
The second a toast to Njord and Frej: For good years ahead, peace and with a desire to ensure good growth.
The last bowl was brought out in memory of the dead, a moment to think of those who sadly passed before the years end.

We have many great things in the pipeline for 2022 and we wish you warm seasonal greetings and a very Merry Christmas.

Thunder and Lighting:
Whilst we cannot know how prevalent thunderstorms were in the past we do know that in Norse Mythology Thor, the powerful son of Odin, was given the title of Thunder God.

It is said that as he rides his chariot across the night sky the hooves of his goat steeds sends the thunder echoing across the realm whilst his Hammer, Mjolnir, flashes in brilliant blue archs whenever it strikes its foe.

Clearly tonight someone has earnt the wrath of the thunder god!
