Paducah, Kentucky- William Clark—half of the famous explorer duo Lewis and Clark—founded this town in 1827. General Ulysses S. Grant once occupied the city during the Civil War, establishing Paducah as a main supply center for the Union army. In 2013 the town was named a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts & Folk Art. While the main street is Broadway, you can find shops, galleries, breweries, and more across the entire historic district, which is managed by the town’s Main Street program. Combine

How cold was the winter of 1804/1805 @ Lewis & Clark's Fort Mandan ?
The winter was one of the harshest the Corp of Discovery had ever spent. The Keelboat was frozen solid in the Missouri River and the hunt for food was never ending. The men however enjoyed the winter in what is now North Dakota. They spent many nights celebrating with the Indians, dancing and playing music. Except for a few mentions of cold in the journals, the men looked forward to returning to Fort Mandan in 1806. Combine Explore Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail

For 50 days in January and February of 1806, several men from the Lewis and Clark expedition set up a salt-making camp in a primitive seaside setting. The camp was about 15 miles southwest of the Corps of Discovery's winter camp, Fort Clatsop. Supplies of salt, crucial for the the curing of meat, had run low, and the men were charged with the task of producing enough salt to see the expedition through the winter and the journey home. "The Face of Winter"

With all the snow and wind we've been getting over the last few weeks, it seemed appropriate to share a photo of one of the masters of winter, the mighty bison. In near whiteout conditions, this bull and his herdmates used their massive heads to push snow from the dried grasses they will need to subsist on until spring. Although bison seem made for winter, these extreme weather conditions are difficult for all wildlife. That's why it's so important that we don't disturb them as they do their best to survive in a world that's so much harder than we'll ever know.

Unspoiled and rugged, the lands of the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument stretch across almost 375,000 acres in central Montana. Towering cliffs—their slopes fragrant with the sharp smell of sagebrush—flank the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, which flows for 149 miles through the monument. A spectacular array of animals and plants calls this area home, taking advantage of the life-sustaining coulees (natural runoff or drainage areas) that abound.

Native Americans have a long relationship with hot springs.
There is evidence that many of the major hot springs in the Americas were visited and used by local native peoples. There are artifacts near some of these hot springs that support a history of human activity that extends back thousands of years. Native Americans revered hot springs as a sacred healing place. Lewis and Clark encountered a series of hot springs in the vicinity of Lolo Hot Springs, Montana that "Spouted from the rocks" .
