The first colonists under Austin's leadership, reached New Year's Creek in Washington County by January 1, 1822. This is where Andrew Robinson and others settled. At that time, beef and venison were in abundance, but corn for making bread was not. Venison was served as bread and precious gun powder was used as salt.
