7 Days of GMA: Oaxaca Edition, Day 7!
🇲🇽
Closing ceremony day here in Oaxaca! We had the incredible privilege to join our medicine woman Norma at her gorgeous home in the valley, where she held a group healing ceremony passed down through generations of her family. Herbs, flowers, and a raw egg were used to cleanse each of our energies, all while she burped out the unclean energy she was receiving from each of us! The personal advice gleaned from her interactions with us was so precious to receive and of course, exactly what was needed for each guest. After integrating our week of experiences with one another, we headed to for a Michelin star closing lunch full of amazing food and said goodbye to our new friends!

7 Days of GMA: Oaxaca Edition, Day 6!
🇲🇽
Today was centered around mindful eating as we explored my favorite organic market with for breakfast followed by a shopping trip to visit local artisans! In the afternoon we had a CE on mindful and intuitive eating right before a truly unique gastronomic meditation curated by .na.ma. Camila combined a visually stunning series of tastes from the region and implored us to be present with our senses- with everything from spices to liquids to a journey of a vegetable in four different preparations it was a great reminder of how we can eat for our mental health and spirit. My favorite was tasting mole with eyes closed and identifying the 30+ ingredients that were lovingly grown and made by friends in the region. A wonderful reminder to be grateful not only for the food that nourishes our body but for those who made it possible to eat.

7 Days of GMA: Oaxaca Edition, Day 5!

Today was a really special opportunity to experience Zapotec healing!! After our morning CE on Zapotec culture and traditional medicine, we were invited into the home of Joshave and Blanca of . Joshave is a Zapotec shaman and held a temazcal, or sweatlodge, for us. We participated in a healing ritual originally for Zapotec queens, and it was quite the honor for all of us involved! We also got trip bracelets, which apparently is now a trend (my heart is so full with these bracelet photos, especially with those who have multiple GMA bracelets now 💗)!!

7 Days of GMA: Oaxaca Edition, Day 4!

Today we got into the spiritual side of Oaxaca! We started with a field trip to the town San Martin Tilcajete known for its alebrijes, or spirit animals, that guide us on this earth and to the afterworld when our soul departs. We each learned both of our own personal animals, and then got to paint them! After, we visited a traditional and gorgeous smoke kitchen Almu for an insanely delicious multicourse meal of local specialties! Later, we met with our Zapotec curandera (healer) for the week Norma. This special medicine woman taught us our CE on psilocybin (hongos sagrados), first grown natively in Oaxaca, and how it is used in traditional medicine here.

7 Days of GMA: Oaxaca Edition, Day 3!

Today was a deep dive into Indigenous Zapotec soul food! After our CE talk on mental health in Oaxaca, we had the pleasure of meeting up with Bani who at 8-months pregnant was a joy to spend time with as she led us through her local market to grocery shop and then back to her home where we learned all the steps to make her grandmother’s 100-year old mole negro recipe! It was so fun to learn traditional methods of cooking and share in this dish! Next we headed to the mother-daughter run to learn the step by step process of making this family mezcal recipe, followed by mezcal flights and snack pairings while we heard a Zapoteca (traditional story time)! Another cool, women powered day here in Oaxaca!

7 Days of GMA: Oaxaca Edition, Day 2!

Connecting mental health with with eating for the soul was on the agenda for Day 2!

Today we had the incredibly special privilege of receiving our CE talk on Mexican mental health from local psychologist Marisol Ramos who, with her organization of 3 others, helps thousands in her local Indigenous population as mental health needs are severely under met. This room full of women felt SO empowering!! We also had a food tour of the many Oaxacan markets with our effervescent Zapotec guide for the week Betsy of where we tried too many dishes to count each one more delicious than the next! 😋 Native chocolate, mole, fruits, and other dishes- plus the group has its first tastings of grasshoppers (swipe to the end for my favorite reaction!!!)

7 Days of GMA: Oaxaca Edition, Day 1!

Our early arrival guests got a fun tour of the colorful Jalatlatco neighborhood ahead of our opening CE talk on Eurocentrism and getting to know each other- what a great, diverse group! Then we celebrated the start of the week with a fabulous 4-course meal at , Oaxaca’s one and only Michelin Star restaurant founded and run by an Indigenous Zapotec female chef .levadura. We enjoyed the famous tomtato appetizer that started the idea of the Oaxaca retreat for me 2 years ago, and so many other great sips and bites!

This sweet moment reuniting with half of our Guatemala 2023 group to get tattoos with a nod to their Mayan day signs, or nahuales. Watching all the ways this trip affected everyone, and how sweet the group’s friendships continue to blossom, is an enormous gift!!

I’ve had the incredible privilege to spend the past few weeks in Guatemala learning about indigenous healing ceremonies from the local Maya, Shamans, healers, and sacred ceremonialists on and around Lake Atitlán. The Maya believe that this lake, which was once the inside of a volcano, is a sacred energy vortex where healing takes place. The teal water is ringed by 3 volcanoes, all of which contribute to this magic. I’m still processing this unbelievable journey, but for now here’s a glimpse into this altering few days. I am so sincerely grateful for the opportunity to scout out healing destinations around the world to share with others, and can’t wait to show all of you the world in person again soon!
