Ferrals les Corbieres, where we have our apartment for holiday let, had their annual fair today - it was sunny but quite cold (by our standards- i.e. 12 degrees). There was a roundabout for the children and, in the Place de Chateau, were tables of old fashioned games, all of which went down surprisingly well. The children were also allowed to pedal cars around the square - for a short period of time the iphones were abandoned. Donkey rides also seemed to be a favourite whilst the adults perused the stands with local produce, walnuts, olives, honey, wines (of course) and patisserie. We were serenaded by a brass band which was extremely energetic and loud - all good fun.

We woke up to a gorgeous day with blue skies and sunshine so we went to Narbonne to the Sunday market and to see the Christmas decorations. We arrived in the town to the sound of car horns blaring out and eventually realised that there was a special classic car rally (and some motorbikes) parading in the centre of town, There were some simply wonderful cars – Peter was thrilled!.

After the excitement of the classic cars, we walked round the market and alongside the Canal du Robine, where there was a fair installed, and then went into Les Halles, the inside market, and one of the best in the south of France. Les Halles were crowded and the food displays were beyond mouth watering. We had been going to eat out, but all the restaurants were fully booked so we bought a ready made lamb tagine and some baklavas to have for lunch back at our house.

Everywhere was crowded but the atmosphere was brilliant - a really lovely morning out (and gorgeous baklavas).

We are so very fortunate to have the World Heritage UNESCO site of La Cite, Carcassonne virtually on our doorstep. We visit the city regularly and it never, ever fails to impress. Today it was still busy, coach loads of tourists plus many locals, all of us enjoying the very special ambiance of La Cite and the gorgeous weather - still warm enough to sit outside and enjoy a coffee or lunch.

We had lunch in our favourite restaurant La Taverne du Chateau where we had a warming Onion soup and a gorgeous Cassoulet plus a Creme Catalan - fabulous food in a fabulous setting.

We have just spent a wonderful week end in Perpignan. A train from Lezignan Corbieres went direct and took just one hour and the journey alongside the sea and Etangs was incredible, at times we seemed to be gliding over the water. There were flamingos in the Etangs and the Chateau le Salses - marking the former border between France and Spain - looked entirely different, and even more imposing, from this angle.

Perpignan is Catalan, street signs are in French and Catalan and, not very far away at all, are the mighty Pyrenees, marking the French/Spanish border with a sprinkling of snow on top. At one time Perpignan was the capital of Mallorca but, in the 1200's, it returned to Spain - the Spanish influence is still there, however, and the Catalan flag flies proudly over a lot of buildings.

We spent four hours walking round the pedestrianised medieval streets on Saturday, ending in the Place de Republique where there was a market and street entertainment. We visited some churches and the Basilica of St Jean-Baptiste, but it was the medieval lanes and alleyways that fascinated us. The ancient buildings are built of small, red bricks interspersed with river stones/cobbles, making a pleasing pattern. As soon as you enter the Castillet, the arched gateway to the medieval sector you go back in time. I highly recommend a visit.

I went to the city of Narbonne today, just 30 km away. We often visit Narbonne to go to the wonderful markets, both indoor and out, or maybe to a vide grenier or to shop, but today I had lunch with friends and then explored the fabulous cathedral of St Just & St Pasteur. It is some time since I last went inside the cathedral and it was wonderful to see it again, a very special place.

At this time of year, just after the vendange (grape harvest), the supermarkets have special offers for all types of wine, Carrefour is no exception. We managed to find lovely bottles of red from Chateau St Esteve, Thezan des Corbieres, reduced to 3.95 - what a bargain.

We have had friends staying for a week, friends who love vide greniers as much as we do, so we were very pleased to see that there was one at Azille, one of our favourite Minervois villages. It was a really gorgeous day, blue skies & sunshine which made the 22 km drive through the vineyards really special.
Great bargains were found. I bought a beautifully hand crocheted cotton bedspread for 10 euros - unbelievable - our friends bought model boats for their holiday homes in Wales plus another lovely bedspread. We were all tempted by so many other things but, as we are all such squirrels and already have attics/barns full of 'stuff', we decided to buy only what we really, really needed/liked.

There are some wonderful restaurants in our region, many look like just small cafes but the food is fresh, well cooked and delicious. Last night we went with friends to a restaurant in the village of Homps (17 km from our gites) on the Canal du Midi - En Bonne Compagnie. This was such a treat. Possibly the best meal I have ever had in France and - Kevin Wild will be pleased to hear this - the chef is from Yorkshire. Wonderful food and plenty of it - I couldn't finish my pavlova with blackberries - I was devastated.

I had a salad with a Vietnamese twist, bamboo shoots, shredded chicken and peanuts in a fabulous sauce. Peter had foie gras with gingerbread and fig chutney, then he had one of the best steaks ever, apparently, whilst I had salmon cooked with tiny fresh vegetables in a lemon sauce - just amazing. My dessert was gorgeous but our friends had one that I must try next time, and there will be a next time for sure - a souffle with vodka sauce poured into the middle. Can't wait to try it.

3 course menus from 29 euros, 2 courses from 20 euros - worth every euro

5 star review received from our latest guests in the cottage in Thezan des Corbieres - many thanks Johanna, Uli and little David, you were wonderful guests:

'Our stay in the small, very cosy cottage was wonderful, not least because of our extremely warm hostess Diane. She welcomed us with a bottle of local wine and delicious patisserie. As we were travelling with a small child, she had all kinds of nice and thoughtful extras ready for us. We didn't have to make use of her offer to contact her if anything was missing or needed as everything was there, but there is no doubt that she would have been helpful straight away'.

It's that time of year again - the vendange (wine harvest) has started. Driving to a local village we got stuck behind one of the massive wine harvesting machines - only very few vineyards pick by hand these days. One of our favourite vineyards, Chateau St d'Esteve, Thezan des Corbieres (near one of our gites) is hosting a wine tasting on 1st September - well worth a visit.

If you would like to visit the Corbieres at this very special time of year then do mail me direct on [email protected]. We have some vacancies in September in our Apartment - the Thezan gite is full in September but has vacancies in October.

We have a huge garden on the banks of the River Orbieu, just 10 minutes walk from our Apartment - we keep part strimmed, and loungers there, for the private use of our Apartment guests. I was strimming there early this morning, but not early enough, it was baking hot so I just worked for an hour. I have never seen so many butterflies in one place, they love the wild flowers and the lavender, small white ones, yellow ones and huge, exotic brown ones with white stripes on the edge of the wing, I think they are called a Sooty Copper (I looked it up).
