🍇 Winemaking campaign of the year 2021 kicked off with the first grapes in France being picked in our region. Due to a cooler spring, they started later, compared to previous years, but they remain early than 15-20 years ago.

Choosing the best time for harvesting is a very important decision for winemakers because it determines the quality of the future wine. Grapes must be ripe, with a good aromatic potential and optimal balance between sugars and acidity. Sometimes it is a matter of a few days! Next month will be hard for winemakers, but by the end of the year we will discover first wines of the vintage 2021.🍷

🚵 Last weekend the village of Ceret hosted the 15th stage of Tour de France, one of the most famous competitions in the world. This mountainous and probably one of the most difficult stages of the Tour, started from Ceret to finish in Andorra la Vella. This event goes beyond its sport dimension and hosts local producers’ market and various festivities. Here is a small video about the event.

🧑🏻‍🌾 Winegrower is a very risky job. If they live in harmony with nature, they also suffer its hazards. This spring brought in many regions the most dangerous late frost. It comes after a period of warm weather when buds and leaves appear, but remain vulnerable. You may have seen spectacular photos from Bordeaux or Burgundy with vineyards literally in fire. By these means winegrowers try to protect vines from being frozen.

Our vineyard has been affected in its northern part, but in other zones vines are doing relatively well. 🍇

🍇When I have been working for a bank, there was one thing that I was really missing: a concrete result of my efforts. Something tangible besides Excel and Powerpoint files. 😉

Here is one thing which is going to remain after out brief course at Perpignan School of Wine.

L’avant-première, a kind of preview before spectacle. It is the fruit of our ardent discussions, of friendly moments we have spent together. This wine will also keep for ever a part of each of us, that everyone has left to him.

If you want to taste it or to buy a bottle, please, let me know!

Cheers!

👨🏻‍🎓 Next step in our winemaking is choosing its packaging:

🍾 First of all, we chose the bottle, its type, shape, colour and size.

Then, we chose a capsule & a cork.

🏞 And finally, the label, which is going to become a symbol of our group.

And you, how do you find them? 😉

🇫🇷Our beautiful region has several names. Have you already heard about Northern Catalonia, French Catalonia, Catalan Countries, Roussillon, Pyrénées-Orientales ? Let’s sort it all out!

The name of Roussillon has been shaped by centuries of History: it originally appeared as the name of a small fortified place, Ruscino, to became later el Rosselló, the name in Catalan, of a medieval county.

⚜️ After the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659), Louis XIV chose Roussillon, French version of el Rosselló, for the name for his new Province, composed of Catalan-speaking counties gained after Thirty Years’ War.

Today Roussillon remains a geographical and historical denomination.

Pyrénées-Orientales is the official name for French department, the most ancient administrative subdivision.

🇫🇷 When creating departments in 1789, the French revolution sought to rub out the reference to former provinces.

Besides a neutral geographical name of Pyrénées-Orientales, an ancient Occitan county of Fenouillèdes was added to the new department, considered to be too “Catalan”.

❓❓❓And then, what stands for Nothern Catalonia and Catalan Countries?

These names are cultural and refer to an area of Catalan language and culture, which includes, for example, Spanish autonomous communities of Catalonia, Valencia, Balearic Islands, but also Andorra or Alghero, an Italian city in Sardinia.

🍷 This account is one of a wine lover, so let’s immediately discover two wines from the Mas Mudigliza, a winery situated in the northern part of our region, called Les Fenouillèdes. 🏞

We will certainly discover this lovely hilly valley and meet Dimitri Glipa, the winemaker, but first of all, let’s taste his marvelous wines!!

Le Carminé red & Cauda Louis white are full of charm, elegance and authenticity.🍷🍷

To be tasted with pleasure and moderation!😉

💨 With more than 300 sunny days per year, our region is one of the sunniest in France.☀️☀️☀️

This climate is mostly due to winds, and especially, to the most common of them: Tramontane. 💨💨💨

Like Mistral in Southeast France, Tramontane is a dry, cold and very often strong wind and can reach 110km/h and more.🥶😅

Tramontane chases away clouds and protects our vineyard from diseases, so that winemakers could limit chemical treatments.🍇👍🏻

For example, compared to Champagne or Bordeaux where about 20-25 treatments are realised , our winemakers make only 5-10 treatments per year.💪🏻🥳

Like an icing on the cake, Tramontane can also fabulously shape clouds. Look how marvelous they are with the sunset!🔥🔥🔥💨

👨🏻‍🎓After the first stage - vine cutting – we carry on our winemaking. Next step: preparation of the cuvee, or blend.🍷

This stage defines the profile of the future wine, that is why choosing the exact proportion is vital. Sometimes the precision goes until 1 centiliter!😅

Indeed, blending two wines do not guarantee a result twice as good as the original ones. 🍷🤷🏻‍♂️🍷🤣

After several tastings, we chose 2 vine varieties, typical for your region 🍇: Syrah and Grenache.

The wine will still be evolving, and the final composition would be acted a short time before bottling early March.

Meanwhile, we are going to work on the label! 🏞👨🏻‍🎓
