Have you ever wondered about the majestic lion-dog statues that often flank the entrances of Japanese shrines? These are known as Komainu (狛犬), and they hold a significant place in Japanese culture and mythology.

Komainu are believed to have originated from China, where they were known as shi-shi or karashishi. They were introduced to Japan during the Nara period (710-794) and have since become iconic symbols of protection and good fortune.

✅Guardianship: Komainu are believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the sacred grounds of shrines.
✅Symbolism: The pair often consists of a male and a female. The male Komainu, with its open mouth, symbolizes courage and strength. The female, with its closed mouth, symbolizes gentleness and wisdom.
✅Aesthetics: Komainu are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, often intricately carved with detailed features and symbolic patterns.

When visiting Japan, be sure to keep an eye out for these legendary guardians. Take a moment to appreciate their beauty and significance, and perhaps even capture a photo to remember your encounter with these mythical creatures.

The Great Tengu statue located at Kurama Station was created by the Kurama community in 1994 to commemorate the 1200th anniversary of the establishment of Heian-kyo (ancient Kyoto).

After its nose was damaged, it was replaced, and the current one is the second generation. With its bright red face and long, protruding nose, it's so impactful that you can see it from afar.

It's popular with tourists for its strong Tengu-like appearance while still having a somewhat gentle expression. In winter, you can see the rare sight of the Great Tengu covered in snow.
