What About Lisbon Private tours in Lisbon and surroundings in english, french, portuguese and spanish --> + info: www.whataboutlisbon.com WHAT? HOW?

We provide exclusive walking, bike and car tours in Lisbon and its surroundings for small groups and individuals. Sometimes we do larger trips to the south of the country (stay tuned!). Our private guides will show you the best Portugal has to offer in a personal and informal way. Although we have some suggestions on tours you might like, we're flexible to your interests and needs... All in all we

know that what counts the most is that «what-an-amazing-time-we-had» feeling at the end of the day! Reservations are made either by phone or email. Ideally, we meet with you prior to the tours to understand what you're looking for and the logistics that suits you best. Yet, often our clients call us on the same day they wish to have a tour and that is ok!!! Meeting points depend on the tour but we usually pick up our clients at the hotel.

"Lisbon is not only the center of Portuguese traditions like Fado music: it is also a mix of cultures, with a large number of African Portuguese speakers from amazing countries like Mozambique or Cabo Verde living here and whose culture has naturally become a part of Lisbon's lifestyle."

Naky, the guide of the African Lisbon Tour, challenges you with "an evening into the heart of the African cultural scene in Lisbon in the very city center, with gastronomy and music. A different way of experiencing this city which once was the center of the world and is today a melting pot."

We at What About Lisbon highly recommend it!

When travelling in the countryside of , you will notice the impressive number and extension of its wind farms. Well, one thing you perhaps don't know is that we are among the countries with the highest percentage of renewable electricity in the world (last February it got up to 95%!). We also have the second largest photovoltaic power station in the world - what about that?

Last week, Portugal hit a major milestone in its ongoing effort to move to renewable energy. The entire country ran for more than half a week without having to resort to fossil fuels. [...]

“I'm always horrified whenever I finish anything. Horrified and desolate. My instinct for perfection should inhibit me from ever finishing anything; it should in fact inhibit me from ever beginning. But I become distracted and do things. My accomplishments are not the product of my applied will but a giving away of my will. I begin because I don't have the strength to think; I finish because I don't have the soul to stop. This book is my cowardice.”

And yet it is brilliant!

So… what about Portuguese caracóis?

Q: Are they land snails, as in those sluggish ones we see everywhere?
A: Yes…

Q: When are we supposed to eat them?
A: Sit in an esplanade with a beer, preferably after a tour with us!

Q: All year long?
A: No, only on months without an ‘R’ (experts say); May, June, July and August.

Q: And what’s the difference from the French escargot?
A: Nothing to do… To start with ours are smaller, more simply prepared and sucked directly from the shells – Portuguese style!

Q: Is it a popular thing, or just for eccentrics?
A: It is a thing we eat at 4.000 tons per year… I guess we are all a bit eccentric.

Q: And what do they taste like?
A: Hum… Chicken! What else?

Q: Any advice for the first trial ?
A: Have toothpicks and napkins around. And perhaps try not to look at them too closely...

Paula Rego is a prolific Portuguese painter and printmaker whose main work comprises strong clear drawing, with depictions of equally strong women in sometimes disturbing situations. In 2009 a museum dedicated to Rego's work named 'The House of Stories' was opened in Cascais, and several key exhibitions of her work have since been staged here - we recommend!

«Sixty years ago at Tamariz, and perhaps without having at the time notion of the dimension of his gesture, Atillio Santini opened the doors of what is nowadays, without a shadow of a doubt, the most famous ice cream parlor in Portugal. By meeting his first client and by serving his first cone of what quickly was considered "the best ice cream in the world", Attillio Santini marked the beginning of a tradition: to go to Santini. »

Do not miss the new Santini house in Chiado!

FIVE THINGS NOT TO DO IN LISBON

If you take the tram 28 towards Prazeres you should explore the neighborhood of Campo de Ourique. It is at the very end of the tram line on your right side. Away from tourist crowd this typical middle class neighborhood offers an incredible variety of shops, cafes and restaurants as well as Casa Fernando Pessoa. With its auditorium, garden, exhibition rooms, works of art, a library exclusively dedicated to poetry, in addition to part of the poet’s estate (furniture and personal items that are now municipal heritage), Casa Fernando Pessoa is a small but multifarious world. And this neighborhood is flat!!! Of course if you would like our help doing so please contact us at http://www.whataboutlisbon.com

Portugal is celebrating the anniversary of April 25th revolution! If you’re visiting Lisbon and want to witness something historic, try to be tonight at 00.20 am in front of Radio Renascença (Rua Capelo), the radio station that in this same night in 1974 played “Grândola, Vila Morena”, the song chosen by the Portuguese Movement of Armed Forces to mark the beginning of the operations.
