There are a series of adrenaline filled activities to do at the Victoria Falls. Some high wire activities are ziplining, the gorge swing and the Flying Fox. You can also bungee jump off Victoria Falls Bridge on the border of the two countries. What about a helicopter or microlight flight over the falls or even do a Tandem Skydive! You can swim at the edge of Victoria Falls in Devil’s Pool, but if you prefer to stay dry on top of the water, don’t worry! On the Zambezi River you can go canoeing, white water rafting or spot hippos on a sunset boat cruise.

In the upcoming month we are sharing the insane natural and cultural beauty around the Victoria Falls. These impressive waterfalls are on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The waterfall is part of the Zambezi River and is the world’s largest waterfall, with a width of 1,7 kilometers. The width and height combined result in the world’s largest sheet of falling water. The falls are roughly twice as heigh and well over twice as wide as North America’s Niagara Falls.

The Wasteland – Graced Land Experience by .foundation is an inclusive local experience. Formerly unemployed youth, now proud local tourist guides, share knowledge of the environment, history and culture. The community is involved in developing a sound environmental and cultural stewardship and share fascinating local history and stories.

- As visitors go ‘walkabout and talkabout’, around the welcoming community they drop in for a quick laugh and pass houses transformed into murals depicting their significant history by the Paint-Up with Kamamma project.

- Lend a handwith a brush-stroke and plant indigenous plants on a former waste dump site, now a botanical garden at the historical St Augustine’s grounds, where the restored calcrete church now serves as a Centre for Arts and Humanities.

- Cook-up with Kamamma is stripped of ‘staged culture' and offers a true “Taste of local Reality”. It is a real and heart warming experience. The Dreamcatcher Kamamma shares her lifestyle and traditions in an authentic home based setting. You will enjoy cooking an item or two of your hearty traditional meal in a fun and participative encounter.

- One can even stay over at a ‘Homestay with Kamamma’ built from recycled building material! The Kamamma host and husband spent 2 years removing disposed building was from the waste dump site which was destined to be burned and landfilled. Back on their proudly owned land, they built a guest bedroom and bathroom with all usual home comforts, from scratch.

What makes ALAAPii different from other "sustainable" tour operators in Africa? We do the necessary work on the ground to develop the destination sustainably. We work together with local politics, like the Ministry of Tourism and Cutural Affairs, as well as the Ministry of Environment. We take surveys in local villages about waste management, meet the local guides and conservationists. By listening to and working with the locals we hope to come up with fitting sollutions for the challenges they face.

Exploring the Sierra Leonean islands! We visited Banana Island and Bunce Island. On both islands a local guide showed us the remains of the slave trade. It is not possible to stay on Bunce Island (seen in last 4 pictures), but we had a lovely stay at Banana Island. It is one of the only places in Western Africa where you can enjoy water sports.

Exploring the Sierra Leonean rain forest! It is full of endangered animal species. Together with our local guides we managed to track down one of those species, that BBC spent 2 weeks looking for without succes. The local communities and authorities happily participated in our waste management and tourism survey. With the insights we hope to develop sustainable community based tourism.

Sweet Salone! Welcome to Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. this country has signficant potential to become one of the most beautiful coastal destinations in Western Africa. This is a work in progress, as we develop tours to underpin the core principles of sustainability with Hope for African, .foundation and local authorities.

What can you expect? A colorful city with bustling markets where you can see the people make the souvenirs from scratch! Spend the night at the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary and see how they rescue and rehabilitate the Chimpanzees. The traffic is hectic and more challenges can be seen in the city. We look forward to tackling the challenges with our sustainable destination development and soon sharing the beauty of this country with all of you.
