Downsizing of lions in Africa.

There were at least many hundreds of thousands of lions in Africa before European settlers arrived.

Now it's only about 20,000 wild lions remain on the continent.

It happens because of the illegal trade of lion prey, targeted poaching of lions for body parts, habitat loss and fragmentation, and human-cat conflict due to the real or perceived threat lions pose to livestock.

How can we save the lions?

By preserving their habitat, protecting them and their prey from poaching and illegal hunting and helping communities coexist alongside them.

You can act by donating on panthera.org whose mission is to protect wild cats.

Information based on article.

5 FACTS about giraffes that not many people know about. 🦒

• It's hard to find these animals asleep even at the night. As they need only 10 min – 2 hours of it.

• Giraffes are vital pollinators and seed spreaders. Without their landscape gardening, Africa would change for the worst.

• These animals have the largest heart of all the land mammals. It can weigh over 10 kg and beats twice as fast as our own.

• When two rival males encounter each other, they start "necking" - bumping heads and interlocking the necks to defend their mating rights and set up a dominance hierarchy. The winner of the encounter will be allowed to mate with local females.

• The Latin for a giraffe is "Giraffe Camelopardalis" which means "One who walks quickly, a camel marked like a leopard".

Introducing to you – Dickson 🙌
Our co-founder.

For over 12 years, Dickson Odear has been working with tourists as a tour guide and operator organizing trips, and also being an expedition leader. Great successes have been to him since he has approximately taken 1,100 tourists to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After the death of his father, he was forced to be a porter at a company owned by his uncles so that he could see how hard they were working to get him to school. He worked as a porter for three and a half years.

One day, he was assigned a task to take two Polish women to the summit of Mount Meru. It was his first time there and he had to work his way up the mountain. The two polish women didn’t take that as a weakness but rather as a chance to get to know Dickson’s soul.

They finally made it to the summit of the mountain and back to the bottom. One of the polish women came down with a recommendation that Dickson has to be promoted through him going to school to add up education. As he kept working while in school, he became a certified guide and that gave him more relief since he stopped working as a porter that he was at first place forced to be during his birthday.

Through his experience as a porter and as a tour guide and operator, a drive to start his own tour company came into being. The main motive that took him to start his own is the fact that he wants to see as many youths as possible working and making a difference in the community.

Also, he wants to see porters taking credit for the hard work they put in to make the success of the companies. Nonetheless, Dickson is inspired by the fact that traditional tourist companies are missing some things in their lists of activities and the authenticity of what these companies are showing to the tourists.

Dickson is determined to form a company that would resound with the next generation, modernize the role of tours and build sustainable tourism. His excellent attention to customers’ needs and fantastic organizational skills make planning a breeze and keeps his clients coming back.

10/06/2022

According to a recent analysis of survey data from across the African continent, giraffe numbers are 20% higher than in 2015.

The total giraffe population is now around 117,000, approximately 20 percent higher than it was thought to be in 2015 when the last major survey was published.

This rise is a result of genuine growth in some areas, but also stems from more accurate census data, says Julian Fennessy, executive director of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, based in Namibia.

“It’s great to see these numbers increasing,” says Fennessy, a co-author of the new research.

Giraffes were once considered a single species. But recent genetic evidence shows there are likely four species of giraffe, three of which have increased considerably in number: northern, reticulated, and Masai giraffes. The fourth, southern giraffes, have remained relatively stable.

The main information is based on National Geographic articles.

African elephants. Part I.

They are the largest land animals on Earth.

African elephants are keystone species, meaning they play a critical role in their ecosystem. Also known as “ecosystem engineers,” elephants shape their habitat in many ways.

During the dry season, they use their tusks to dig up dry riverbeds and create watering holes many animals can drink from.

Their dung is full of seeds, helping plants spread across the environment—and it makes pretty good habitat for dung beetles too. In the forest, their feasting on trees and shrubs creates pathways for smaller animals to move through, and in the savanna, they uproot trees and eat saplings, which helps keep the landscape open for zebras and other plains animals to thrive.

We’ll continue to share with you interesting facts about animals, tribes, and the magnificent nature of Africa in the next posts. Keep exploring. 🌍
