Girl Tech (Fest) is a different kind of school day for girls in the 5th grade in Norway (9-10 years old). It takes place in 50 locations all over Norway, with 4000 attendees, on 22 October.

For the second year in a row, we attended the event in Flekkefjord, Norway along with 10 other companies. This event aims to encourage girls’ interest in technology and science – 120 girls attended from schools in the local areas. The 11 companies had their own works shop, all girls attended 4 different workshops ranging from building a bridge with spaghetti and marshmallows and creating a podcast to 3D-printing and an electronics workshop.

Mylene Toledo and Linn Andrea Thoresen from our Maritime NOC at Eik Teleport ran our workshop which was programming the ‘Bee-Bots’ you can see in the pictures. The girls were given a set of instructions and they had to programme the Bee-Bots to follow a specific route!

As connectivity between ship and shore expands, the risk of cyber threats to maritime vessels is rapidly increasing. It’s been 50 years since the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) was adopted and the IMO Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, highlights in his video message the crucial role this treaty has played in setting international safety standards in maritime. Friday 20 September was the day of our joint seminar and panel discussion with the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce in Japan and the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo - ノルウェー大使館. The seminar focused on unlocking the potential of digitalisation and how it is a game changer for sustainable shipping. We brought together Norwegian maritime expertise with the shipowners of Imabari, Japan. Our VP Corporate Communications, Knut Natvig, took to the stage and highlighted how the conversations between suppliers and owners have changed due to disruptive technologies, the increased importance of cyber security, and the opportunity for their vessels to move closer to being a floating offshoot of a branch office.

Before the seminar, our team were delighted to visit our long-term customer, Fukujin Kisen KK with the Norwegian ambassador to Japan, Kristin Iglum and her team.

We’d like to thank all the speakers, panelists, and of course, the 60 attendees who took the time to take part in the seminar.
