Last weekend we had one of our favorite families stay with us again. :) Their little is 1 1/2 years old and is on the move. I wanted to have plenty of fun stuff for her during her stay so I made a trip to Holly's House of Hope to stock up. I got all of this for under $10! (small toys are $0.50 and large toys are$1.00)
Holly's House of Hope thrift store is open to ALL. They are currently looking for donations of summer clothing for all ages, toys, and shoes. If you have any of those things and are looking for somewhere to take them, look no further! They have a green bin placed outside near the front door where you can place your donations. If you need assistance getting items out of your vehicle, ring the doorbell and they will come out and assist you! Their hours are M-W-F 10:30 - 1:30

As I was cleaning the Nook this morning, getting it ready for upcoming guests, my mind took a journey down memory lane – back to November of 2021. Mark and I fell in love with this place the minute we stepped in and knew it was special. We truly had no idea what we were doing other than we had a vision… to create a place where friends and family would gather, creating memories they would take with them when they leave. It has been such a wonderful journey and we are so grateful for all of the owners who came before us who believed in this old house as much as Mark and I do – opening the door for us to create the next chapter. There is still more to come, but it’s fun looking back at where we started. Thanks to all who have stayed here, giving us the opportunity to be your host. It is truly been an honor.

Less than a week until the Witches Walk! Enjoy an evening sipping and shopping as you stroll through downtown Highland. There will be prizes, giveaways, and specials from the various merchants. Mark and I want to thank everyone that came by Thursday for the Chamber After Hours. We had a blast! Mark and I had the opportunity to have a private tasting at the Food Dude Catering tonight. The food was spectacular! We have eaten at many amazing places in our lives, and Pat’s food and presentation are right up there with the best – absolutely exceptional. It was such a treat. I have to say it was one of the best evenings (and meals) we have had in a long time. Great food and great company (we enjoyed spending time with Pat and his wife after the tasting) - I can't imagine anything better! We would highly recommend Pat for any of your catering needs. Such a great time at the Highland Jaycees Schweizerfest parade! Absolutely loved being a part of this Highland tradition. Thanks to all the Jaycee members and other volunteers/police that made this event happen. You all work your tails off - so appreciated! Also, a big shout-out to the Nook crew that made tonight an absolute blast - the cab crew Mark and his son Ben and the bead peeps Amy Johnson, Ginny Portell Van Teslaar, and my son Wil. My heart is just so happy!

The latest addition to the Nook…the Tibbett's room. It has a king bed and a twin daybed along with its own private bathroom. This addition completes the second floor - whew! The Nook now has 5 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, and sleeps up to 12. Now, it is on to the basement renovation! www.thenookonninth.com

I have to give a shout-out to the City of Highland – this is sooo very cool. I stumbled across this on their website. https://www.highlandil.gov/live_from_the_square/index.php It’s a live view of the square!
So, the other night I shared the link with my college boys who are in Kansas and told them to hop on the site at a specific time. Mark and I headed up to the square with our dog Otis (who the boys love more than me, so I knew they would jump at a chance to see him…lol), we walked past the camera and we were able to “connect” with them live. It was so much fun. This was the pic they sent me after watching it. I found out later that both of them stayed on the feed for a bit longer, even after we had gone out of view, just to soak in the vibe of Highland. They both have amazing memories of Highland. It’s always been like a second home to them.
Thank you so much to whoever put this into place – it’s a great way to stay connected with friends and family across the miles! BTW, I love this town!

Over the weekend, it was an honor to host a family from Japan. Yoshi (Onishi) Nomi, who was an exchange student at Highland High School and graduated in 1999, came to visit with her parents, husband, and two boys. They spent the weekend sightseeing in St. Louis, enjoying a meal at Popeye’s Chophouse, and reconnecting with her American “family” and friends at the Nook. We are so thankful they included us in their visit. Mark and I were invited to come by on Sunday to meet everyone. It was truly a delight! There is just something so special about being in a home filled with love and laughter – and on Sunday when we stopped in, the Nook was overflowing with it. We hope they come back to visit again! Thank you Emily for putting it all together!

Happy first day of spring! Easter is April 9th. If you have family coming in and you need extra room, we have that weekend open. We are also taking reservations for 2023 & 2024. Just wanted to give a shout-out to a few of the amazing businesses in Highland. Community is everything to us. We try to shop locally as much as we can and the businesses around here make it easy for us to do just that. Being able to pop into the shops around town and find hidden treasures that make our space unique is priceless. (These are a few treasures we found for the 1831 room)

Well, here we grow again….the fourth bedroom, “1831”, is ready! It has a twin daybed with a trundle bed. We haven't themed the rooms, but we do have names for each of them. Mostly to keep Mark and me on the same page as to what needs to be done and where…lol. We felt 1831 would be a good name for this room based on the year Highland was founded by the pioneers from Sursee, Switzerland. Our hope is for our guests to have an amazing stay, as well as an opportunity to have exposure to the historical roots of this wonderful community. https://thenookonninth.com/before-and-after

The Nook is growing! We now have an additional bedroom and full bathroom on the 2nd floor. Stay tuned, by the end of February, the 2nd floor will be complete with an additional 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms allowing for up to 14 guests! This truly is a place to gather, connect, relax, enjoy, and make some great memories!
