This city absolutely comes to life at night! The ship ports right downtown in The Bund. We walked from the ship, through the park, and into the shopping district for dinner with a view!

Viking: China Discovery Day 9 🇨🇳

⭐️Canals of Zhujiajiao⭐️

The final day of the cruise. Shanghai. What a gorgeous city. The skyline is breathtaking!! But, I didn’t spend the day in the city. Instead, I rode about an hour and a half into Zhujaijaio. This charming town is over 1700 years old with its 14th century buildings and picturesque canals.

We took a gondola ride, walked through the local stores, had lunch at a boutique hotel, followed by a lesson in Tai Chi. It was a fantastic, immersive day to cap the trip. I’m ready to be home but China was a trip of a lifetime for me!

Viking: China Discovery Day 7 🇨🇳

⭐️Impression Putuo Performance⭐️

This included excursion was an outdoor, evening show that was a beautiful extension of what we learned earlier at the Buddhist altar. The venue is on the same property, the Guanyin Culture Garden. The show was produced by the same team that staged the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It was an absolutely beautiful performance of music, dancing, singing and acting highlighting Buddhist love, kindness, virtue and self-realization.

🌧️ side note: Viking seems to have an infinite supply of ponchos so you never have to worry about getting wet in the rain! Before you even have time to think “I wonder if it will rain today,” they are handing out ponchos and big red umbrellas. ☂️ ☺️

Viking: China Discovery Day 7 🇨🇳

This afternoon I visited the Guanyin Culture Park, the world’s largest Buddhist cultural project where the monumental shrine to the Buddhist representation of mercy sits. This place was breathtaking from the surrounding property to the intricate sculptures inside.

After that visit, we went to a local restaurant for a traditional Zhoushan feast!

Viking: China Discovery Day 7 🇨🇳

With Viking, an excursion is included at each new port. These options off a highlight tour of the destination. Another great service they offer on the ocean cruise is complimentary shuttle services to nearby attractions or shopping for the guests who want to explore on their own. We are in this port until late evening, and my excursion is not until 2:15. I took the 10am shuttle into Kaihong Plaza for a little shopping on my own!

I wandered my way through a 7 story shopping mall, purchased an assortment of local candies from the supermarket, and had lunch at Starbucks 🤣

Viking: China Discovery Day 6 🇨🇳

Every day, I come back to my room thinking, “today was so cool!” But I really loved today!

We are at port in Dongtou. We drove about 20 minutes to an art studio in town where we learned the technique of making sea mud pottery.

Sea mud pottery is a culturally rich art form that is practiced in Dongtou. It combines clay extracted from the Yellow Sea’s tidal flats with traditional pottery techniques to create functional and decorative pieces with distinctive colors and textures.

We each painted our own piece that will be fired and delivered to our ship at a later port. Because we were a small class of only five, we also got to each take a seat at the potters wheel to try our hand at throwing pottery. It is harder than it looks!

We finished the tour with a tea ceremony with the tea master. 🫖

Viking: China Discovery Day 5 🇨🇳

⭐️ Pingtan’s North Coast ⭐️

After a stormy morning, we headed out to see the scenic coast of Pingtan Island. We spent most of our time in a quaint, coastal village. We stopped at a traditional Fujian stone house, drank some coffee, and learned the art of fan lacquering. We each dipped our own fans, creating a very unique souvenir to take home!

Before returning to the ship, we stopped at an overlook at White Sand Park. We could see a yellow croaker fish farm as well as an abalone farm!

It was a rainy day, but we made the most of it! I feel like if you approach the day with an open mind and positive outlook, you can make even a rainy day turn out fun!

A rainy day on a cruise is still better than any day at home!
The storms have cleared and a little rain is not keeping me from exploring Pingtan, China today!

Viking makes this easy by supplying every room with a large umbrella and each guest is given a poncho for their excursion.

Viking: China Discovery Day 4 🇨🇳

⭐️ A Day in Quanzhou ⭐️

This tour was so fascinating to me! We walked through two temples and a mosque while learning about three of the major religions in China.

We parked downtown and walked through the bustling streets of Quanzhou on our way to the Kaiyuan Temple. Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou is the largest Buddhist temple in Fujian province. Most of the buildings on site date back to the 1300’s! It has massive stone towers on the east and west side of the temple. ⛩️

From here we walked to lunch for a very authentic, local experience! We tried 10 different dishes! 🥢🍛

Next, we drove to Licheng District to visit the Guanyue Temple, also known as Guandi Temple. This is a Taoist Shrine with a dragon adorned roof and filled with smoke from offerings. This was a very active temple with people walking through the rituals of Kai Chim (Fortune Sticks) and Jaiobei (Moon Blocks) looking for guidance in their decisions. Outside the temple, the street was lined with Fortune Tellers. 🥠

We continued our walk down the same street to the Qingjing Mosque. This building was very different in style and architecture than the previous two, but still rich with history in its Arabian Style. It was built in 1009 and is the oldest existing mosque in China. 🕌

Our final stop was to the Luoyang Bridge. It is the earliest existing cross-sea girder bridge in China completed in 1059. The project was sponsored by Cai Xiang and his stone statue stands in the park at one end of the bridge. 🇨🇳
