I work for the Budapest Zoo just next to the famous Hero Square. The City Park and the Zoo area is a tradicional wintering place for the Waxwings, because of the hundreds of berry-trees, like Common Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), and Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum).
This winter was excellent for the Waxwing in Hungary, we saw big flocks, sometimes thousands together. The max. number was about 300 here around the Zoo.
Otherwise the Zoo is good place for watching Gery Wagtails during the winter, usually 2-3 birds living here from November-December to early March along the Big pond and some other open water. Several years ago a nice Kingfisher spend the winter here.
We have a wild Grey Heron/Great Cormorant colony, we can watch Common Cranes, Greylag, Great White-fronted Goose just above the Zoo every Autumn, Peregrine, ect. (the best place for the Peregrine within Budapest is the St. Stephen's Basilica).
So the Zoo is good for relaxing and enjoy the exotic animals and the really wild birds too.
