I’m excited to announce something new at Mullins Woodworks. In response to requests from students and customers, I am now offering rough-out bowls that are dry and ready for finish-turning. These rough-out bowls are great for folks who want to make finished bowls, but processing their own bowl blanks from logs isn't practical or even possible. Finish-turning a bowl from a rough-out provides many benefits.
✔ No log processing means less equipment needed, less mess and less waste.
✔ No waiting for the wet bowl to dry before it can be finish-turned.
✔ Buying wet bowl blanks is expensive with no guarantee of quality or availability.
✔ Great practice for novice and experienced turners alike.
✔ An affordable, fun and quick method of finishing a bowl to call your own.

A rough-out is a wood bowl that has been turned from wet “green” unseasoned log wood using the twice-turned method. Using this method, the wet bowl (called a rough-out) is turned with extra thickness, sealed and set aside for drying. When dry, it’s turned a second time (finish-turned) to achieve the final shape and size. The extra thickness allows for turning the warpage out of the bowl that occurs during drying.
