I am so excited, our new book is finally here!

This book is for all the people that had friends and family tell them not to farm, and they pursued their passion anyway to farm with nature.

We are hoping this story spreads far and wide to inspire all those who dream big.

Let's focus on reducing waste this year! 🌿

As consumers, we all have so much power to change the world in just being conscious of what we buy and how we choose to use it. 👌🏼

Let us all try to buy less, choose well, and make it last! ♻️

Reposted from .waste Ever heard that plastic-wrapped produce reduces food waste by keeping food fresher, longer?

New research by sustainability charity Wrap has debunked that idea.

Woolies has long used this as a reason so much of its fresh produce is wrapped or prepackaged in plastic.

This new research suggests that on items like apples and potatoes, it doesn’t make them last longer and in fact adds to pollution and food waste, as packaging often forces people to buy more than they need.

The 18-month study also looked at sales of bananas, broccoli and cucumbers.

The research found that plastic wrap “doesn’t necessarily prolong the life of uncut fresh produce, and packaging they were sold in made little or no difference to their shelf life.”

If you celebrate lent, what are you giving up? Usually people give up chocolate so we thought we’d look into the Regenerative Agriculture in Cacao farming. 🍫

Like coffee (which we spoke about yesterday), climate change is affecting how and where Cacao crops grow. Cacao often grows near the Equator, yet global warming is drying up many farms, pushing farmers to turn to irrigation systems and other harmful practices. However, turning to regenerative agriculture could help to mitigate these effects.

chocolate are looking to carbon inset through their supply chain through regenerative agriculture in Central and South America, where deforestation and mono cropping are rife. By investing in agroforestry, cacao farmers can help to nurture the soil around their crops and sequester carbon. Regeneratively farmed cacao could help to sequester 85 metric tons of CO2 per acre over the next 20 years.

Diversifying the farms around the cacao plants, farmers can produce higher quality crops and profit off alternative plants yielded on their farms. If larger chocolate companies were to invest in Agroforestry through their supply chains, we could see gigatons of carbons sequestered.

Do you know why bamboo is the coolest grass?😎

Bamboo can be very sustainable if grown in the right conditions. It is fast growing and is very low maintenance as it doesn’t need fertilizers or large amounts of water.

It doesn’t need to be replanted as it self-generates from it’s own roots. Also, it produces 35% more oxygen than other hardwood trees.

Bamboo is ideal when used in it’s raw original form, for furniture, or objects like toothbrushes or cutlery. It is an eco-friendly alternative to other types of hardwood trees like Oak (which grows much slower).

However, be aware than many bamboo fabrics on the market are a form of rayon where the manufacturing process is highly intensive and involves many harmful chemicals.

Although the production of bamboo is more sustainable than cotton, the manufacturing process of bamboo fabrics uses highly toxic chemicals, and is not considered a sustainable solution.

In conclusion, choose bamboo products when they are made of raw bamboo, like furniture, toothbrushes, cutlery, and other objects. It is a sustainable alternative to most woods!

Reposted from Easy Eco Tips] Why is it important to recycle dead batteries?

When recycling batteries, we can recover many valuable materials and avoid toxic spills in landfill.

Billions of batteries are disposed of each year, but unfortunately many of them end up in landfill (if not in nature).

When sent to landfill, toxic chemicals may leak into the ground, which can cause soil and water pollution.

Instead, through specialised recycling facilities, we can now recover most of their components and extract plastic, metal scraps, manganese, aluminium, cobalt, nickel, copper, cadmium or zinc.

All these elements can be separated and then used by other industries, instead of being mined which would be much more damaging to the environment.

How to send them for recycling?

This depends on your local recycling facilities. The website Earth911.com has a tool to find the closest drop-off location!

Make sure to dispose of them correctly to ensure they are properly recycled.

Reposted from During the past six decades, the world has produced about 8.4 billion tons of plastics. Most plastics or their tiny particles, aka microplastics, are found in landfills and the natural environment, like water, air and soil. Thankfully, Dr. Katrin Schuhen develop a fast and easy, filter-free solution to remove microplastics and micropollutants from water.

❤️Like this post to support innovators who invent new ways of protecting and healing the planet.

Follow for more positive updates!

Dr. Katrin, founder of Wasser 3.0 (), developed an elimination technology that is embedded in their overall strategy for microplastic-free waters: Wasser 3.0 detect | remove | reuse.

Because in the end everything comes down to detection, which has been very complicated, cost-intensive and time consuming for microplastics – until now - they have developed an easy-to-use, cost-effective and fast method in order to continuously monitor and optimize water treatment processes.

Their technology uses hybrid silica gels, non-toxic chemicals that act like glue. When you add the silica gels to the water containing microplastics and micropollutants, they clump together, incorporate the pollutants and float to the surface. Thus, they can easily get skimmed out of the water without using a filter. The collected clumps (=agglomerates) can then be used as fillers in construction industries or for other purposes. In this way, we close the loop.

They developed three concepts to remove inorganic (heavy metals), organic (pharmaceuticals, pesticides) and microplastic contaminants from waters. The goal is to achieve zero pollutants in the water.

22/01/2022

Possibly the most sustainable aspect of h**p is that it doesn’t leave the soil dead and depleted after multiple plantings. Quite the opposite, actually. After the h**p stalks are harvested, the leaves are left in the field to biodegrade as we mentioned above. During this composting stage, h**p actually restores soil nutrients (particularly nitrogen). For that reason, we could even rotate h**p farms with other, more consumptive crops without having to wait seasons in between plantings as with regular crop rotation.

The strongest empirical evidence comes from the experience of testing h**p’s decontamination properties on one of the world’s most severely contaminated sites: Chernobyl. The company Phytotech started planting h**p at Chernobyl affected sites in Ukraine in the late 1990s and found that it removed significant parts of the radioactive components from the soil.

Sandra Pascoe Ortiz, a chemical engineering professor at the University of the Valley of Atemajac in in Zapopan, Mexico, has developed a plastic made from cactus juice.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The plastic alternative takes around 2-3 months to break down in soil and even less time if soaked in water or put in compost — about 7 days. It’s also non-toxic and edible -- which may help mitigate some of the hazards for sea creatures since so much of our plastic winds up in the ocean.⁣⁣

"I believe that it is never too late to start changing things," Ortiz says. "Every day there is a new opportunity to do things better, so if we each do what we have to do, there is another opportunity to reverse all the damage we have done to the planet."⁣

These are fantastic. They clean great, come in such tiny packaging and they donate to a cause of your choice. Love, love, love.
