Catherine Fitzpatrick is a freelance art educator. She received her Masters of Art in Painting in 1982 from Pratt Institute in New York City. In the Jacksonville, Fl area she worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art where she began as a docent then joined the Education Department where she began training Docents and teaching in outreach programs, and continued with her love of the collection by ho

sting tours. When she left the MoCA she was the Associate Director of Education. Living in Ponte Vedra Beach, Catherine began teaching art classes at the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach. Students in her classes were early elementary through young adult. She developed and delivered a middle school art program, a home school gallery and studio course, as well as worked in a special program with recovering drug offenders. She has been developing her ideas for the Go Art program over the past year offering trips and tours in the area to the Sawgrass Players Club Women’s Association. Catherine tells us “I love hearing people talk about art and about what it inspires in them. I love hearing them exclaim over new understanding or of recognizing something the artist has expressed. This is really what motivates me to develop Go Art.”

I believe this is what Springfield, this Springfield neighborhood is about.

Everyday people are the essence of Sedrick Huckaby’s work. “Ordinary people matter,” he comments. Many of his subjects live in Ft. Worth, Texas, where he also makes his home. The work reminds us of art’s power as a communicative tool that engenders change by empowering an understanding of on...

This artist is in our area, from Ponte Vedra Beach. She makes some of the most compelling sculptures I have seen. I took a group to see her work back in 2018.

What do you call sculpture? Something you bump into while backing away from a painting. (Ha Ha)
The fact is, however, that sculpture was perhaps the first form of expression in human history.

Join Go Art when we consider the ceramic sculptures of Vikki Stockton. Wed. Aug. 22 or Sat. Aug 25.

I often think about how this neighborhood, Springfield, is so nice. I imagine all kinds of wonderful things that could happen as the future rolls past because this place is kinda special. Here is a little art to give that sentiment expression. I cannot find info on the artist, only the person who posted the image.

KIPP STRIVE Academy, "Sojourn Point", Atlanta, Ga, by Muhammad Yungai strikes me as a little deeper than most murals. MLK Jr. embodied the idea of "Strive" in his person and in his life. However, in this image he is a little outside the center of each circle. He understands the core of these circles. He keeps them in his mind even if they continue to spin out around him.

I have been thinking about the value of "striving" in relation to my community of Jacksonville, FL. I live in a neighborhood that has a reputation for being diverse and inclusive. However, as we face decision making on the use of federal stimulus funds, once again the preferences of mostly white people are sidelining the needs of black people. The neighborhoods very nearby, with predominately black people that have been waiting for septic tank remediation for over 50 years (that is alot of tax revenue) receive short shrift to make room in the budget for a bike/pedestrian path in the city core. As lovely as the bike path could be it is yet another way the black neighborhoods are being pushed aside.

I saw a post recently about gathering a group to have a discussion about the Zanele Muholi exhibit at the Cu**er. I love that people are getting excited about discussing art. Is it possible to have a fruitful discussion about art when participants don't agree? https://www.artandobject.com/video/who-decides-what-art-means

There is a question that has been tossed around by philosophers and art critics for decades: how much should an artist's intention affect your interpretation of the work?

The Cu**er has just opened an exhibit of Zanele Muholi who explores contemporary life through self portraiture. Here in Jacksonville is an artist also using self-portraiture to do something similar, perhaps more powerful. She has been a teacher rather than a self promoter. I would love to see a full exhibit of THIS woman's work. It is fantastic.

At the Springfield book club this past weekend the selected book was poetry. There was wide ranging talk about the role of poets, the brevity of poetry compared to prose, how it is often difficult to take in, and how it can reflect emotions in ways that other media do not. The conversation wound down with talk about how to recognize quality in poetry, and for that matter visual art. After having made a special effort to see the famous Guernica by Picasso one club member shared her frustration for having experienced so little when the painting is acclaimed world wide. While I believe there are great art works that deserve special preservation, this article from the NYT says what I believe makes a true art experience for each of us. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/26/opinion/picasso-nashville-southern-art.html

William Edmondson and other self-taught artists remind us of how genius somehow finds a way.

This work by Natasja Kensmi is packed with so much sensitivity to the warping of ideals that happens when people use spiritual symbolism to affirm oppressive ideas; oppressive ideas like retaining the school names of war leaders who stood up for cultures of oppression.

Today my cyber art wandering was focused on finding art about male sexual shame. I want to watch "Promising Young Woman" and I heard it takes a very complex look at sexual assault. I found the work of Natasja Kensmi, who is Dutch. So I am posting an image of her powerful drawing included in the exhibit "Shame! Exploring Masculinities." Wow. I am posting one of her works here that I captured in a screen shot of a video. The video is 45 min. long.

She also has some drawings I will post tomorrow which speak amazingly well to the conflict in Jacksonville over school renaming.

I got my first Covid vaccination today. I find myself wondering about the contribution artists may have made to understanding the medical solutions to the pandemic. This statement struck me and inspired my search for art about re-imagining medical technology, " Artists have been asking about the way in which these technologies modify our relationship to the body " This work is by Sophie Kahn, a digital artist and sculptor, whose work addresses technology’s failure to capture the unstable human body. She uses 3D laser scans, 3D printers, and ancient bronze casting.

I spent the morning outdoors today. I was inspired to find art that is particularly contemporary in responding to living in this world. Even without the text included in this work I find the image engaging. A great swath of something that looks like stone, like a layer of earth, with a little pile of itself deposited on the ground, brings on thoughts of eternal life, changing seasons and eternal presence.

I've been looking for art that responds to our Covid times. I ask a question to firefox and see what comes up. Today I asked for visual art about "acquiescence." It is an emotional experience or state of mind that we each have to deal with at some level or another during this pandemic. Note the date of creation.

Odili Donald Odita: ‘Untitled’ (2020)

“The drawing represents a rupture in continuity. I want this drawing to convey what it feels like to have a stop in flow or a halt within a process. This moment is the blink that exists without time; it can last a second and, in this case, for days and months."
