So it's been a whirlwind tour of the Florida Keys, camping at state parks and riding the overseas bike path (when available). Highlights: one long day to Key West (115 km), one flat tire (that I fixed myself!!), lots of homeless chickens and traffic, traffic, traffic! I couldn't believe the non-stop traffic. It took forever to cross the road!
Riding back to Miami through palm tree nurseries (with a couple landfills along the way) was a nice break from the traffic. A final night in little Havana and morning ride to key biscayne before returning bikey and heading to the airport. I'll miss the weather but looking forward to the quiet and peace of home.

Back on the road but only half the fun - riding from Miami to Key West. Thanks mom for joining me on a warm- up ride in South Miami Beach:) It took me awhile to navigate out of Miami (some boat show had multiple streets closed on the way south and insane traffic). But now I've made it to the keys and after a very wet day yesterday, I should make good time cruising south. It's so flat and my rental bike is light as a feather! I'm flying even with the side/head winds!

Finished off Big Sur then the land flattened out a bit. Stayed in San Simion for a couple of nights and then spent a foggy day in Morro Bay. Then it was on to sunny San Luis Obispo to see the old mission, through Pismo Beach and a fun night camping at a private yard with a couple of other cyclists.

As we get close to wrapping up our trip, I've been reflecting on how much I've learned and grown. Only a few years ago, I was just a person who would ride a bike once in awhile. When I started touring, I had to stop my bike to take a drink of water. Now after so many miles on the bike, I can do a ridulous amount of things while cycling: turn sharp corners, take photos, lipbalm application, giving gentle high fives, tucking in straps on my panniers, drinking, eating, water fights, as well as putting on and taking off riding gloves, sweaters, sunglasses, headphones and helmet. I still have to master riding with no hands but I feel like I can now call myself a cyclist! I am but a shadow of my former self.

I have cried 3 times on this trip so far. The first was from the first day of really no shoulders, lots of traffic and going too fast downhill = I am going to die on this trip. The second was from frustration after too many flats and too many hills = this trip is too hard. The third time was 2 days ago when an overwhelming sense of beauty, awe and accomplishment brought me tears of joy while I coasted down the empty hillside of Big Sur = this is too amazing.

For those of you wondering where we have been for the last few days, we got to Santa Cruz, then cycled down to Monterey and went along the iconic 17 Mile Drive. Afterwards, it was on to Big Sur. Some of the best scenery yet! We came to a section of the road that has been closed to cars for months due to a major landslide, but we had learned that if we waited until 6pm when all the construction crews go home, we could ride through. There was a big group of us and it was a lot of fun.

We have had minimal bike issues until yesterday... and unfortunately we made up for it with a tire that just kept going flat. 3 patches got us to the nearest bike shop where I decided to replace the tires. Looks like the problem is solved. My very best/amazing bicycle boyfriend came to the rescue every single time - for a total of five bike tire removal/replacements ❤️❤️❤️❤️.

Sometimes you find just the right book to read while you are on a trip/vacation and I highly recommend this one to anyon...

Sometimes you find just the right book to read while you are on a trip/vacation and I highly recommend this one to anyone even if you aren't surrounded by giant trees. It is a fantastic listen/read.

Florida keys video!!!

I think this might be the hit single off my upcoming Bike Trip Album...

I have cried 3 times on this trip so far. The first was from the first day of really no shoulders, lots of traffic and going too fast downhill = I am going to die on this trip. The second was from frustration after too many flats and too many hills = this trip is too hard. The third time was 2 days ago when an overwhelming sense of beauty, awe and accomplishment brought me tears of joy while I coasted down the empty hillside of Big Sur = this is too amazing.

Btw - here is a short clip from the Astoria Bridge crossing. This the beginning, but after the boot and a few dead birds in the first five minutes, the other 20 minutes of riding wasn't too bad!

So much of our trip so far has been on dedicated non-motorized pathways - its been unbelievable. Olympic Discovery Trail has been outstanding, but we are at the end of that now...

This shouldn't be common on our trip but it is a little challenging riding without a shoulder on short stretches of road... especially with the rain...Chuckanut Drive through Larabee State Park.
