Brave Women FLX Brave Women FLX celebrates the historic trailblazers and women-owned businesses in the Finger Lakes.
(2)

History tells us that it takes a brave woman to thrive in a Finger Lakes winter. Trailblazers like Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and the Iroquois matriarchs carved out a new future for all of us in this fiercely beautiful region. As the epicenter of the women’s rights movement, the Finger Lakes region celebrates women both past and present in 2020. This monumental year marks the centenni

al of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. This winter, come celebrate their bravery and experience their stories on a visit to the Finger Lakes. While you’re here, you can also support the innovative and creative women who are blazing their own trails in business.

152 years ago today, Susan B. Anthony cast her vote for president. While she was arrested for illegally voting as a woman, brave women (and men) fought for years and years for the right for EVERYONE to vote as an American.

Today is your chance to put your mark on history. If you haven't voted early this year, be sure to make it to the polls today. Don't take advantage of your rights. Cast your vote for the 47th president of the United States of America.

It is no secret that Harriet Tubman called Auburn home and carried on her duties as a conductor of the Underground Railroad in the region. But you may not know that Springside Inn and the thick woods surrounding it were also storied to have hid those on their way to freedom.

At the time, the farm located along the shores of Owasco Lake was serving as a schoolhouse. Later it became a private residence before becoming a hotel welcoming guests.

Today owners Beth and Sean Lattimore maintain the home’s history through the 7-room inn and accompanying restaurant, serving as both a wedding and events venue and a Finger Lakes retreat.

On November 5, 1872, Susan B. Anthony cast her vote for president - illegally. She was arrested two weeks later in her parlor at home.

152 years later we have another November 5th presidential election, and Susan's home Susan B. Anthony Museum & House serves as the site of an early voting location in Rochester.

Read more about the history in this article from the The New York Times:

The home in Rochester, N.Y., now a museum celebrating the women’s suffrage movement, is serving as a polling place for early voters.

Another historic home from the 1800s, Tillinghast Manor Bed & Brunch offers a unique spin on the traditional bed & breakfast concept. Instead of forcing guests to adhere to an early breakfast, they embrace the comfort of sleeping in, relaxing, and dining at their leisure. Owners Mike and Jean welcome guests with local wine and indulge them in a 4-course brunch each day. The Italianate home that once slept Theodore Roosevelt has been extensively remodeled. It is located just a shot distance from over 100 wineries along with several state parks and museums.

Twenty years ago, the Ellwanger Estate alongside the Ellwanger Gardens in Rochester was in great disrepair. That was until it was discovered by United States Air Force veteran Rosemary Janofsky. Rosemary envisioned the beauty that this historic home could have once again and spent years bringing it back to life. Now the Ellwanger Estate Bed & Breakfast has 4 spacious guest rooms, each with their own theme, as well as a wrap-around veranda surrounded by acres of gardens and greenhouses.

We are so incredibly excited for the new restaurant that has opened at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse! The café, Louise, is a partnership with Danielle Mercuri Campolito from Drēmer Group (the masterminds behind Rise N Shine Diner, eatatlalalu, and LODED). Louise uses dishes from the Rosenfield Collection of functional pottery, meaning diners get to eat and drink with actual pieces of art.

Have you heard the exciting news? The 2024 Olympics are the first time EVER where women make up 50% of the athletes. 🥰

"The last time the Summer Olympics were in Paris in 1924, women made up 5% of the athletes. 100 years later women will make up 50% of athletes for the first time ever!

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games will be the first Games to reach full gender parity. Out of the 10,500 athletes participating in the Games, 5,250 will be men and 5,250 women." -- via The female athlete project

For an inspiring picture book about trailblazing female Olympians, we recommend "She Persisted in Sports: American Olympians Who Changed the Game" for ages 5 to 9 at https://www.amightygirl.com/she-persisted-in-sports -- and its board book adaptation for ages 1 to 3 at https://www.amightygirl.com/she-persisted-in-sports-board-book

For more kids' books about female Olympians in a variety of sports, visit our new blog post "30 Children's Books About Female Olympians" at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=34101
