Dodan-Tsutsuji (Enkianthus perultas)
The huge Dodan-Tsutsuji tree at this temple is said to be more than 100 years old and in the autumn its leaves turn a brilliant red. The view of the colored tree from the main temple is like viewing a living painting. Visitors can take turns posing in front of the tree and taking pictures.
The best time to view the Dodan-Tsutsuji is in autumn, usually around November. However, the peak viewing time changes yearly depending on weather conditions. Best also to arrive before the sun starts to set.
The Dodan-Tsutsuji tree can also be viewed any time of the year and is a lush green in the spring and summer.

Since the sakura cherry blossoms are among the most powerful Japanese symbols, there's no wonder that they are being used in all forms of art. And given Japan's unique artistic manhole covers, the cherry blossoms cannot be missing either... Especially in prefectures having sakura as a symbol, such as Nara. Shodoshima (小豆島, Shōdoshima) is the second largest island in the Seto Inland Sea and one of the first islands born to the gods in the creation myth of Japan. The name literally means "small bean island", which technically refers to the azuki bean but today would more fittingly refer to the soy bean or olive as the island has traditionally been a producer of soy sauce and now is even better known for its olive plantations.
