In our series of Meet the Teachers today we introduce Jane Craggs.

Jane has been coming to Les Passeroses pretty much since we first opened our doors and guests return year after year to tap into some of Jane’s magic for a week.

Jane has been teaching yoga now for over 20 years. Initially trained in theatre, Jane moved away from that lifestyle following a serious reoccurrence of glandular fever in her late 20s. It was her body saying no to the burning the candle at both ends lifestyle (Jane had had a comedy act at the time and had been touring the UK supporting artists like Caroline Aherne and John Thomson).

After a move to Spain and a few years spent in Ibiza Jane attended a yoga retreat in Galicia which is where she fell in love with the practice. She carried on her yoga studies in Madrid whilst teaching English but it was in 2000 when she returned home and people asked Jane about yoga did Jane start to consider the idea about sharing her yoga passion.

Jane started out renting a basement space in Manchester’s then edgy Northern quarter with the intention of opening Manchester’s very first independent yoga studio.

With the wonderful help and support of Les Passeroses’ Adrian and Alex, Yogaspace was born and after a shaky start it became a lovely little community with a small number of qualified and committed yoga teachers. From there Jane went on to create Manchester Yoga Shala - an institution that ran for five wonderful years offering a lovely relaxed space, pioneering lots of classes there including sessions for the homeless and those on low income, regular live classical music yoga sessions and barefoot boogie.

In 2007 Jane went to India on a seven month sabbatical where she undertook training with many well-known yoga teachers trying a number of approaches from astanga vinyasa to yin yoga and everything in between which culminated in a three week opportunity with the Mohans. The retreat called "Yoga Psychology:Yoga Sutras of Patanjali" in Tamil Nadu, was an amazing experience and Jane has continued studying with the Mohans and completed Yoga Therapy Training with their son Ganesh Mohan.

After this training Jane set up Svastha Yoga Manchester with Louise Tanner, sharing the clarity and authenticity of the teachings of the Mohan family. Jane’s work also includes developing and delivering workshops and seminars including Yoga Sutra and philosophy, Therapeutic applications of yoga and how to use sound in practice.
Jane has also developed a series of CPD sessions for Yoga Campus called Mindful Teaching, helping new and experienced yoga teachers come back to basics and revitalise their teaching.

Jane is a qualified Yoga Therapist with the IAYT and has specialised over the years with vulnerable young women groups, adults with additional needs and cancer patients to name just a few. Janes’ recent work has even included working with offenders in prisons so we can see that Jane comes from a varied but extremely qualified background and we are delighted that Jane chooses Les Passeroses to share that knowledge and incredible empathy.

Thinking ahead to beautiful days full of sunshine and yoga. With everything that’s going on at the moment it’s understandable to worry but it’s always nice to have something to look forward to.

Les Passeroses schedule for summer 2020 is packed full of incredible teachers and wonderful retreat weeks. When the world feels a little grey then it’s always nice to focus on special things to look forward to.

Just imagine.....waking up to the sound of birdsong. A lovely early morning yoga practice as the sun rises followed by a delicious breakfast. A day spent soaking up the sun, swimming in the pool, cycling through fields of sunflowers and reading a book. Perhaps a blissful massage or some reflexology. Some time spent in the early evening stretching out in a beautiful yin yoga practice. And then a dinner under the stars sharing stories with new friends.....

It’s these thoughts of summer that get us through these grey days of winter....

Meet the teacher.

Over the coming weeks we will share a series of posts about the wonderful Les Passeroses teachers.

Today we are focusing on Anika Grimm of Living Yoga Holidays. Anika will be with us at Les Passeroses for two week during 2020. Anika will be with us 25 July - 1 August and 1-8 August. As well as being an absolutely incredible yoga teacher Anika is also a wild swimmer which means most days (rain or shine) you can find Anika at her local Brighton beach about to take a dip in the sea. It is this one activity that really sums up Anika and her incredible stamina, energy and passion. This is all transferred into Anika's yoga classes where she really listens to the needs of her students and adapts classes accordingly.

Anika first started teaching yoga in London in 2002 and moved to Brighton the following year where she set up and still runs regular yoga classes, workshops and foundation courses under the name 'Viniyoga Brighton and Hove'.

Anika achieved the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY500hr) diploma and the yoga therapy diploma through the Association of Yoga Studies (AYS500hr), studying with Dave Charlton and Ranju Roy. She then completed a pregnancy yoga and active birth course with Gail Reeves of Beautiful Birth and beyond. Anika also trained with Gareth Williams and Chantal Rafferty to become a Thai yoga massage practitioner. Most recently, Anika attended a two year Ayurveda course with Ann Johnston.

Anika is one of the organisers and a trustee of the 'Brighton Yoga Festival', a charity which aims to show that yoga is for everyone, but especially those who have never considered trying out this practice. As part of the festival Anika has been presenting a tv show all about different yoga backgrounds, which is shown on local TV.

Anika's retreats offer that perfect mix of incredible yoga tailored to each student whilst also injecting a wonderful level of fun and friendship. Who knows you could even join Anika on one of her wild swims? And if wild swimming isn't your thing then there is always the beautiful pool at Les Passeroses should you fancy a dip.

For more information about Anika and her retreat weeks at Les Passeroses visit https://www.livingyogaholidays.com/yoga-holidays-in-france

Have you ever come back from a holiday just feeling like you need another holiday to recover from that holiday. Often holidays involve lazing around, lots of unhealthy food, too much alcohol and late nights! Despite the tan you can come home feeling bloated, overweight, tired and lethargic. This is the absolute opposite of how a yoga retreat holiday can make you feel.

Yoga Retreats are not like holidays in that you don't come home feeling like you've overindulged and are in need of a holiday, you come home feeling like the best version of yourself, full of energy, renewed from the inside out. It's a magical experience and a gift we should all give ourselves because it benefits everyone around us.

So, check out the retreat schedule for Les Passeroses and book that holiday that really will make a difference...

Today is National Hug Day. Never underestimate the power of a hug. Whether giving or receiving, a hug can really help. A little bit of yoga can provide many of the endorphins that are released in a hug as yoga is the ultimate mechanism for self soothing. So if there’s no one around you want to hug then get out the mat and enjoy a yoga hug.

Here at Les Passeroses we are so aware of the intrinsical connection between body and mind with the practice of yoga. According to this article it would seem that there is increasing evidence that yoga enhances the brain structure.

Even more of a reason to book that yoga retreat for 2020!

A review of the science finds evidence that yoga enhances many of the same brain structures and functions that benefit from aerobic exercise.

Interesting review of Alistair Shearer's book, The Story of Yoga https://www.ft.com/content/7db00d64-36f7-11ea-a6d3-9a26f8c3cba4

The book delves deeply into the history of yoga with some interesting anecdotal research on mind-yoga vs body yoga.

During a retreat at Les Passeroses there is always a wonderful balance between mind and body yoga and our retreat guests definitely leave feeling the benefits in both mind and body...

According to recent news sources - https://bit.ly/35LzNvb - and analysis yoga is proving to be the most popular 2020 fitness trend. This really doesn't come as a huge surprise to us at Les Passeroses as we continue to extol the benefits of a regular yoga practice.

What this article does address though is the accessibility of yoga and the benefits of attending somewhere like a yoga retreat.

We see first hand how enlightening a week's yoga retreat can be. As touched upon in this article, it is more than just yoga but an opportunity to reconnect, unplug and fulfil basic human needs for both body and mind.

Do check out our schedule for 2020. We have some amazing teachers lined up and can fully support the life change that attending a yoga retreat can bring.

The start of a new year often brings new faces to the gym each January, and experts have weighed in on what they think will be some of the hottest fitness trends for 2020.

09/01/2020

How are the new years resolutions panning out? Is the gym still part of your daily routine? It is well researched that new years resolutions rarely make it beyond the end of January. Face it January is a hard enough month without the added trials of diets, training and work outs.

At Les Passeroses we like to do things a little differently. Rather than making January a month of suffering we find it makes more sense to give us things to look forward to...

Booking a yoga retreat is like making a new year resolution as you are making that commitment to yourself. Booking that retreat now gives you something to look forward to, a focus. That retreat then will be the kick start to a new regime. A week of care and nurture at our wonderful retreat centre equips you with the skills and the self love to make that commitment to yourself, alongside the yoga practice that you will want to make a part of your everyday life.

Don't take our word for it. Lucy joined us last summer. She booked a week at Les Passeroses with some Christmas money she had been gifted:

"Every year I follow the same pattern. I laze around and stuff my face over Christmas and then come January I sign up for the gym, starve myself and quit by the end of the month. Last year I decided to invest in me and booked myself a week at Les Passeroses. Money well spent. The week taught me yoga but it also showed me the skills to practice yoga at home and how to incorporate that into my everyday. This year even over Christmas I found time to get the mat out and found that I didn't have that lethargic feeling of previous years. That retreat was the best Christmas present I could have gifted myself."

Yogacampus have been sharing their yoga love at Les Passeroses for a few years and we love the energy they bring to their retreats. This week-long retreat New Dimensions is a follow on from last year's successful retreat and will really delve deeper into the practice and help those that teach yoga and those training to teach, develop a deeper understanding of the asana practice and the connection with breath and mind.

So recognising we have not been very prolific over Christmas and haven’t had much to share we found this picture which I think really sums up that time between Christmas. You really feel like you should be doing but actually it is completely ok to do nothing. The shops are open, it’s a clear bright day but actually it is perfectly ok to stay home and not do. Just take this time for a well event rest.

At Les Passeroses we have been really busy sorting out our schedule for 2020 and ensuring that the Les Passeroses comforts are all in place. As we enter in to 2020 we will have lots of exciting information and news to share with you but for now our message is rest. If there is one element we hope people can take from our retreats is how vital rest is for the body and mind. Alongside the yoga classes we ensure that everything is in place for our guests to have a restful time so we implore you to follow that advice now....

Just another news story highlighting the benefits of yoga, not just for the body but also for the mind. - https://www.cnbc.com/2019/12/17/study-practicing-yoga-improves-brain-health-and-emotional-functioning.html

This article delves into the many benefits of a regular yoga practice on the brain boosting memory and information processing, as well as emotional regulation.

The article explains how the three core elements of yoga - movement, breathing and meditation have an impact on the brain structure and function.

Another reason to get on the mat!

A new study suggests that practicing yoga has similar brain benefits as aerobic exercise. Specifically, researchers found that yoga acts on "regions of the brain that are responsible for memory and information processing as well as emotional regulation," Neha Gothe, study author, tells CNBC Make It.

We run yoga holidays in Sicily, South West France, Barcelona and Morocco. We’ve been doing this for 10 years now and as the holidays have become more and more popular.

19/11/2019

It’s getting cold outside but don’t let that dissuade you from getting on the mat. It’s tempting to just snuggle up on the coach but practising yoga can build up an internal heat that can heat up the body far more effectively and save money on those heating bills. We have made a list of five yoga postures that can help build up the internal heat, keep you warm and form part of a great yoga practice:

Revolved Chair Pose (Parivrtta Utkatasana)
Chair pose by itself is a great way to build strength all over your body and warm you up from head to toe. As well as raising your internal temperature adding a standing twist cleanses and detoxifies your body.

Headstand (Sirsasana)
The focus and core engagement required in a headstand builds a great amount of heat, and is a great way to warm up as the mercury drops.

Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)
Backbends activate internal heat without having to switch on the heating.

Locust Pose (Salabhasana)
Doing a few rounds of locust pose will really activate your inner heat. This bad boy strengthens the back of your torso, the length of your spine, your legs, and your arms.

Boat Pose (Navasana)
Boat pose will warm you up in an instant whilst working on that all important core.
