Filerimos Ialysos 🏛️
The journey to the cross is led by a stone-paved path known as "The Street of the Holy" or "Golgotha". Filerimos Hill, located at the northern end of Rhodes, stands 247 meters tall and is one of the most visited tourist spots on the island.
🏛️ Inhabited since ancient times by the Telchines and later the Minoans around 1500 BC, and fortified by the Mycenaeans in 1100 BC, Filerimos has been a witness to history. The legend of Phorbas, invited by the Rhodians to rid them of snakes, eventually settled in Filerimos. The story of Vasilopoula, pursued by enemies, ended her life here in a dramatic fall from the cliff.
🌄 The current Filerimos Cross, built in 1996 with an internal staircase and standing 18 meters tall, replaces the previous 30-meter stone cross constructed by the Italians. The monastery was established by the Knights in the 14th century on the ruins of a Byzantine church, which itself was built on the foundations of an ancient temple of Athena, parts of which still survive today.
🏺 **Archaeological Sites:**
Filerimos is home to significant archaeological sites, including the Doric spring of Kryne, a 3,000-year-old project, the ruins of the Acropolis, and remnants of the Temple of Athena. These sites are accessible and maintained by the Rhodes Archaeological Service.
🌳 **Trails:**
Filerimos is crisscrossed with trails leading to the old chapel of Prophet Elias, the ancient road, and the path to Doric Kryne. While these trails are preserved, some, especially towards Doric Kryne, are in need of attention.
🌍 Filerimos = Abode of the Gods in Greek Rhodes.
Visitors today can explore numerous sights, including churches, ancient temples, modern monasteries, natural beauties, and an ancient Kalos unparalleled.
🌟 Upon arrival at the archaeological site, you're greeted by a giant oak tree. To the right begins the glittering path, a unique blend of beauty, history, and faith. Along this path, you'll find bronze statues by Italian Antonio Maraini, depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. To the left, as you enter, the church reveals itself: Panagia ti Filerimos, restored on September 19, 1931. The image of the Virgin of Filerimos is intimately linked to the history of Rhodes, having been brought to the city by the Knights for protection during sieges.
