Did you know that a trip to Bermuda brought tennis to America?
Mary Ewing Outerbridge, who is widely considered the "Mother of American Tennis," was born in the U.S. to Bermudian parents. While vacationing in Bermuda in 1874, Mary fell in love with the game and returned home to Staten Island, New York with a tennis kit. Mary then setup the first U.S. courts, sharing the sport stateside. Today every swing of a racquet in the U.S. can be traced back to Bermuda, a 21-square-mile island just 90 minutes from NYC.
