As we explore the town of Siquijor, we’ll take a closer look at three distinct types of houses that showcase the rich architectural history of the island, reflecting different time periods and influences. The first house we see here is a Spanish-era vernacular house, a perfect example of Filipino ingenuity blending with colonial influence. Characterized by its elevated design, wooden framework, and capiz shell windows, this house was built to adapt to the tropical climate while reflecting the craftsmanship of its time.Next, we have a transition house, which marks the evolution of Filipino architecture during the Spanish-American period. This house blends the ornate details of Spanish design with more modern, functional elements introduced during the American colonization. Notice the use of concrete on the lower floors paired with traditional wooden features, a testament to the blending of two eras. Finally, we arrive at an Art Deco house, likely constructed in the late pre-war or early post-war years. This style is easily recognizable by its geometric patterns, bold lines, and streamlined details. It reflects the global influence of the Art Deco movement while still adapting to local needs and materials. These structures not only tell the story of Siquijor’s past but also offer a glimpse into how culture and history are etched into the very walls of this town. So, as you walk through these streets, take a moment to appreciate how these houses connect us to the lives and times of those who came before us.
