Just Start Walking Just walk out that door!

26/05/2015

I'm back!
After a few years of change (a move to France, a baby!) I'm finally considering my next walking trip. I now have a little one in tow, which changes many things. But still, there are possibilities... discovering Europe on foot? Walking and collecting edible plants?
Let me know what you'd prefer!

1st April 2012 update: I'm back from India but working on the project a little while longer. I also have a couple of things to take care of before setting out on a new journey, so the departure is delayed. But rejoice! If you're in the UK, contact me, as I'm walking around here over the next few weeks.

Hope to hear from you!

Hello everyone!

Just a quick update: I'm in India until March, working on a sustainable tourism project here (mapping human rights abuses linked to tourism in the southern states of the country.) Will be back soon, and with good news walking-wise!

Stay tuned ;)

Done it! And at a good pace, too! Good job girls.

Fundraising walk for Martlets Hospice. 13 miles starting at midnight. We had fair weather, crashing waves and a peek-a-boo moon. Beautiful.

A few girls from Brighton are joining the Just Start Walking team for the Brighton Night Walk tonight! If you're up and out at 2am, cheer for us!

OK! After a little break in France, we're back on the British trails! Many walks coming over the next few weekends, including the Cheddar Gorge in Somerset, Mid-Wales, the Peak District and a flat but long walk in Oxfordshire.
As always, send me a message to let me know when you're available to join the group; Ill be posting precise dates shortly.

I've created a new sponsoring program! Send your Message in a Backpack (mine!) and receive an answer from someone I'll meet on my walks. Funds will be used on my longer walk, which I'm planning for later this year. But start donating now, and speak to people across the UK!

Next walk: an exploration of London's old and new Olympic sites, April 17.

We spent 3 days hiking as much of the Coastal Path as we could (43 miles in total, out of the 72 possible). The Isle of White is now one of my highlights of Britain. So peaceful, beautiful, friendly. Going off season is a treat, and I recommend the West Coast, more rural and wild, to everyone.

Just finished 40 miles around the Isle of Wight... which is fantastic! It's one of the most beautiful spots I've seen of England so far - really worth a visit. If you go, spend some time on the West and South of the island, as they're more rural, less touristy, and much more scenic. Photos to come soon... and the next trip's already being planned!

Setting out for London - with major wind outside, but oh well!
This page is still under construction. Feel free to add to it; it's your page, too.

Dear weather: please don't get wetter or colder until next week. I'd rather not be soaked for 4 days.

I just wanted to check out Liverpool... so I walked out the door and went. It took 8 days, with a rest day in Llangollen. So. Much. Fun.

A 3-day walk between the Valleys of Matheysine, Trieves and Beaumont.
Day 1: La Mure to Mens
Day 2: Mens to Corps
Day 3: Corps to La Mure

walkit.com — The urban walking route planner

This one is a bit of a niche - but what a useful one! Now there's no reason not to put on your walking shoes if you live in London or Birmingham.

Walking Britain - a resource for walkers, walks and walking.

And of course there's the VisitBritain-sponsored one:

With over 10,000 pages of walking information, including many walk descriptions, "Walking Britain" is dedicated to the footpaths that cross the landscape. The National Parks feature strongly in the lists ...

The Long Distance Walkers Association

If for you 3 miles is barely a warm up (and 20 sound more like a normal day out), check out the Long Distance Walkers Association. Their calendar of events is very well populated and each event I've attended what loads of fun, even if I completed the smallest routes each time!

Fancy a walking challenge? The Hillwalkers Register provides information, advice and a list of successful walkers who have completed a "round" of various lists of hills in England, Wales and Ireland. The National Trails Register does the same thing for the recognised British national walking trails.

Sustrans | Join the movement

Sustrans is a good resource. Their interactive map is sometimes parinfully slow to load, but their routes are always well marked.

Whether you're a camper, a cycle tourer, a hiker or simply a lover of nature, culture and the great outdoors, we hope to inspire you to holiday less far, less fast this year and to have an unforgettable time en route.

I love walking (or hiking, as my American husband would say.) It's fun, you can go at your own pace, and it helps you reconnect with nature and with yourself. I hope that this page will inspire my friends (and more!) to explore the trails around them, or anywhere in the world.
It's easy: just start walking!
