In the 1860s and 1870s, North Bloomfield had nearly 1,500 residents and over 200 buildings. However, after the Sawyer Decision restricted hydraulic mining debris in waterways, the town faded into a ghost town.

Daily tours of the historic buildings are offered in summer and on weekends in winter in what is now the Malakoff Diggins State Park, sharing stories of 1800s residents and their mining operations.
