🔎 The endless movement of people, cultures & ideas
⚔️ Lessons from the Frontier Wars
🌍 Restitution: What history teaches us about sustainable progress
Plus, a fascinating glimpse into Thomas Baines’ artwork in a favourite book of mine, an unforgettable love story from 1812, and—if you book a tour—perhaps a tale about a black rhino encounter! 🦏

Had an amazing time in Knysna last week at The Knysna Fringe Festival!

A huge thank you to Sasha Campbell for the invitation and for putting together such a fantastic event at which I opened to a full house, with a talk on the pre-European history of southern Africa. The warm response from the audience was truly uplifting. It was also a pleasure to reconnect with old friends who came out in support. Looking forward to the next chance to collaborate with Sasha and her incredible team!

🌹💘 A Love Story for the Ages 💘🌹

On this Valentine’s Day, let’s travel back to 1812 and uncover a romance born in the midst of war. Sir Harry Smith, born in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, in 1787, was a decorated British Army officer. During the Peninsular War, he met 14-year-old Juana María de los Dolores de León in Badajoz, Spain—just after the siege of the city. Their connection was instant, their love enduring. ❤️

Their remarkable bond became the stuff of legends, inspiring Georgette Heyer's beloved 1940 novel The Spanish Bride. 📖✨ Sir Harry's autobiography gives us an intimate glimpse into their life together—through battles, triumphs, and travels across continents.

From war-torn Spain to shaping South African history, their story is one of devotion, adventure, and resilience. A true partnership that stood the test of time. 🕊️🌍

Feeling inspired? Dive into their tale with our chat with Alan—because some love stories are simply unforgettable. 💬💕

Exploring history isn’t just about memorizing dates and battles—it’s about stepping into the lives of those who came before us. When you walk the paths carved by settlers, soldiers, and indigenous communities, history stops being a collection of facts and becomes something you can feel. You begin to see how different cultures collided, clashed, and coexisted, shaping the world we live in today.

Alan Weyer’s tours and talks don’t just tell stories; they immerse you in the Eastern Cape’s past, where every river, valley, and ruin holds echoes of struggle and resilience. Understanding this history isn’t just about looking back—it’s about seeing the present with new eyes. It sparks conversations, challenges assumptions, and deepens our awareness of the forces that continue to shape our society.

History has a way of revealing truths we might otherwise overlook. It fosters empathy by making distant lives feel close, broadens our perspectives by showing us the world through different eyes, and arms us with the knowledge to engage meaningfully in conversations about heritage, identity, and change. In a world that often rushes forward without looking back, there’s real power in pausing to understand where we come from.
