The Lake House
One of my top 10 places to eat in Denmark, The Lake House sits on a beautiful small dam surrounded but natural Denmark forest. The menu of cheese platters caters for all tastes, though those who like to eat to full I would recommend getting an extra side of bread. They also have their own wines which are grown from the onsite vineyard to compliment the meal. A great place to relax and just enjoy nature while in Denmark

Sharp Point in the Torndirrup National Park offers an amazing view of the south coast from the Gap panning 180 degrees to West Cape Howe in the west as well as stunning views of the Southern Ocean. The limestone cliffs formed during the last ice age. As the water receded the ocean floor was exposed blowing shells and sand onto the shore, normally yellow limestone, a crimson sunset paints them an amazing pink. Access is via a slippery gravel road off Frenchman Bay Road, there are no toilets or disabled access, but there is a hard gravel carpark and a narrow concrete/limestone path that takes you to two view platforms.

Visiting Albany during the winter months, you may have looked accross our many bays and seen whales. Here is some information on the Southern Right Whales that visit Albany during the winter to breed

19/07/2019

July is the middle of the whale watching season, and now there are quite a few Southern Right whales around, some with newborn calves, very cute. There are also a few Humpbacks also that have arrived late. In the Albany centre, Middelton Beach and Marine Drive are the best spots. Heading East, Cheynes Beach, Normans Beach, Beattys Beach and Two Peoples Bay are excelent spots ( all these beaches have Toilets and most have BBQ's, there are no park fees for these ) Heading South, the Torndirrup National Park has great vistas from Isthmus Hill, Salmon Holes and The Gap ( Park fees apply, for locals the $23 annual park pass is recommended and for tourists I would recommend getting a visitors pass as this will save money at all locations ) Heading South also brings you to the Windfarm with just stunning views of the Southern Ocean and not that uncommon to see Dolphins surfing the waves. Windfarm is free to visit and has excelent toilet facilities including disabled.

As the weather cools and the calm coastal waters turn to majestic waves that crash the granite rocks, Denmark offers some amazing places to grab a coffee or wine in front of a fire, enjoy a hearty meal or just sit back and relax

02/04/2019

Denmark, just 50kms West of Albany is probably one of the most naturally beautiful places in Western Australia, the majestic Southern Ocean meets old native forests mixed with farmland. No better place to relax and enjoy a cheese platter

If you are having a holiday in Albany, Western Australia on The Amazing South Coast, please check out the board walk at the Wind farm, Sand Patch about 10 minutes from the town centre. The board walk offers many vistas East, South and West, perfect for a sunset. And if you are lucky, a pod of Dolphins enjoying the waves.
But wherever your journey takes you this season, may the trail rise to meet your feet and the wind be at your back.
Take care and travel safe!

The Albany Heritage Park is located in the Centre of town on The Amazing South Coast, a perfect spot to escape to when you need some solitude whilst traveling. The 260 Ha ( 600 acre ) park encompasses Mt Clarence and Mt Adelaide which offer a plethora of vistas to view our unique town and landscape. The park also has a myriad of bike riding trails and walking paths, such as the Board walk which will take you from Middleton Beach, along the edge of King George Sound to the port. There are also a number of historical buildings and bunkers to explore and the park is also home to The National Anzac Centre. There is no charge to enter the park, only the ANZAC Centre, so a great spot to have a picnic and watch the sun set. The park is currently host to the Field of Lights exhibit, some 16000 lights placed between the trees on the Avenue of Honour, an emotional experience

Winter brings the annual migration of whales from Antartica to the warmer waters of Australia for mating and calving. Albany has a number of charter boats that operate from the city's harbour. Weather depending they leave at 9.30 am for a cruise that lasts several hours. Humpback whales are the first to arrive for the season and being quite inquisitive may come up to the boat. A moratorium on hunting humpback whales in Australia came into effect in 1963 ( ref: DoEE ) after the population dwindled to around 5,000 animals world wide, today there are about 80,000 humpback whales where other large marine animals and fishing nets are their biggest concerns. As humpback whales are mammals, the female ( which is larger than the male and grows to around 16 metres ) will carry her baby for a year to give birth in warmer waters. She will provide around 50,000 litre of milk which is especially rich in fat and proteins for her calf losing around a quarter of her body weight to feed the calf. By spring the calf is big enough to begin the perilous jorney south to the rich feeding grounds of the Antartic returning to the same place their mother came from. Humpback's are known for the distinct song the males produce which can last up to 20 minutes, and each population cluster has its own particular song which changes slowly over several years. They grow up to around 30 tons which makes them as heavy as our large road train trucks you see on the road! Truly amazing creatures to ses up close.

Winter signifies the migration of whales north from Antartica for breeding, here you can see footage of some Humpback whales in King George Sound, they can grow up to 16 meters long and weigh as much as 30 tons!

The South Coast of western Australia offers some exceptional vistas and non better than the Board Walk at the Sandpatch which is also home to the Wind Farm which is only 10 minutes drive from Albany's city centre. This is the enchanting Little Beach and Waterfall beach in the Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve located about 45 minutes East of Albany. The beach is very clear, turquoise in colour and has a fine white sand that is beautiful for relaxing on. the beach has a toilet and the nature reserve has gas BBQ's, park tables and more toilets. As it sits in a nature reserve and is quite isolated there are no shops or distractions which makes relaxing easy, there are paths to explore to look at the natural and diverse fauna and flora. The rock pools are definitely worth exploring. As with all the south coast, ocean currents can be strong at times so please swim safely. Photos on https://.instagram.com/lovemysouthcoastwa

Approximately 500 steps will take you down to the beach area. The steps are very steep so recommend you are fit and carry water. The beach has many rocks and rips so not recommended for swimming.

The Forts, located within the Heritage park on the eastern edge of the city in Amazing Albany sits the Princess Royal Fort on Mt Adelaide and named after the Princess Royal harbour which was claimed by Captain George Vancouver RN in 1791. The fort was opened in 1893 and was the first Federal defence of Australia. The 6" movable gun you see in the video had a range of 16km's though it was never fired in anger, Ref: Francis Richard. On Mt Clarence at the western end of the park you will find the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial which commemorates the ANZAC's who died in Egypt, Palestine and Syria during WWI. In 2014 the National Anzac Centre was opened marking 100 years since the First Convoy to Galipoli departed Albany November 1st 1914, it is a very emotional visit to the centre to see how many young men perished and the conditions they faced.

No trip to the South Coast of Western Australia would be complete without visiting the picturesque Little beach in the Two Peoples Bay nature reserve east of Albany. The bay was named in 1803 when an exploring French boat came across the United States brig Union, commemorating the across the world meeting "Baie de Deux Peuples". The area is protected from the Southern Ocean by Mt Gardner and is home to a diverse range of fauna such as the endangered Gilbert's Potoroo and Noisy Scrub Bird as well as Quokkas.
